Are you ready for controversy? Are you ready for hate? Well then, you are at the correct place! I will give you my top 75 songs from Dream Theater and some of them are pretty damn controversial. Remember that it is all opinion and there are somethings I like that you may not like....so let's get started! And now for some quick facts!

Also, opinion is what makes each individual unique...so, why don't we get started?

1) 8VM nor ACOS is not my top 5 Dream Theater song list.

Number 75: Peruvian Skies
From the album Falling into Infinity, Peruvian skies makes number seventy five. Why you may ask? Because there are 74 other songs that I like more!  :metal
Peruvian Skies is written by John Petrucci about abuse in Peru, hence the title name Peruvian Skies. Starts off really mellow then picks up aggression until Petrucci's godlike solo comes in. Unfortunately, this beats the other song about abuse, Anna Lee and don't expect Anna Lee to show up on this list!

Edit: No Astonishing songs on this list.
Edit 2: No Metropolis Part 2 songs also. Each song should be listened to as a whole. Each is vital to the album so I will exclude Metropolis Part 2 songs also!

Number 74: Behind the Veil
Here is another song by John Petrucci and the reason this song is even on my list is because of Petrucci's solo. I find his solo on this song to be one of the best on the album.

I don't find this controversial.

Agreed, I think it's the best guitar solo on that album, or maybe tied with Illumination Theory. However, my personal favorite part of BTV is that cool intro. I love the atmosphere Jordan  created here, and then the full band plays that same theme later.

The first time I heard BTV intro,  I immediately thought Creeping Death similarities.. Great song all around with a wicked good guitar solo!!!

wolfking

I never really understood the Creeping Death reference. I guess I can see why people would say it, but they are not really that similar IMO.

Architeuthis

The timing is a little different than creeping death. My friend who is a die-hard Metallica fan caught it too the first listen. Then I let him listen to DT covering the entire Master of Puppets album live. He was impressed!

mike099

Two great songs!   Is BTV about the kidnapping of those women in Ohio?  The song came out about the same time as the women were found.  I always thought this song would be a great opening song for first or second set.

Train of Naught

I like these lists, especially one where I have no idea what will be the top 5, following :tup Good call on BTV, great solo especially, but I gotta wonder why PS is so low  >:(

How are you handling all this stuff at once though? Opeth Discography, top 50 albums, about 10 survivors and now this on top. What's next, a song roulette?  :metal

Haha thanks! A roulette is a good idea too! But I think up to this much is how much I could handle.

#13
Number 73: Bridges in the Sky
A nice song by Dream Theater. Don't like the part at the beginning, but overall, this song is pretty strong. This is my least favorite song on ADTOE, but it still beats all songs from WDADU besides two.

ASacrificedSon

Number 72: False Awakening Suite
Here is a really short instrumental by Dream Theater  and we see mangini almost in all his glory. It is fast paced and it is divided into three sections. Not a bad spot for this song!

Very interesting as many people seem to say this is one of their favorites on ADTOE.
I personally love the intro, but I know not everyone would be into these sort of atmospheric sections.

Number 71: Innocence Faded

From the album Awake, Innocence Faded is probably the least liked Petrucci song. PROBABLY!
I personally like it. When Labrie hits that really high note, my jaw drops so much. :jawdrop:
I love the introduction as it is really melodious and this song is probably the poppiest out of the bunch, the runner up being The Silent Man. The highlights of this song are the outro and the intro instrumentals.

KevShmev

Peruvian Skies and Bridges in the Sky are both way too awesome to be this low, but it's your list. :)

Will be reading, although not always posting.  :hat

Really? I haven't heard that before. Innocence Faded is generally well-liked.

Rodni Demental

Innocence Faded was the song that took the longest to grow on me from Awake, took a while and I really didn't think much of it at all for ages. I don't know why it didn't click early on.
Apart from SDV, that one never grew on me. ;)

Train of Naught

Meh, maybe this belongs in the controversial opinions thread, but I really don't like Innocence Faded at all, it's easily a bottom 10 DT song for me.

Pretty curious about this, Octavarium isn't in my top 5 either but I consider ACOS to be near perfection.

ASacrificedSon

Number 70: You Not Me
You guys knew this was coming sooner or later. The chorus is very catchy, I'd have to say, but other than that...it's a pretty big meh for me. Bottom song on Infinity with BMS. Those two are the only weakest Infinity songs which I don't find to meet my standards, other than that, is fine.

Number 69: Far From Heaven and Number 68: Vacant
It was either this or Vacant and I enjoy Vacant a lot more. Although it is shorter, it stood out to me more and had more feels. A nice ballad written by labrie.

Sorry, I meant from the album Awake.

Yeah, I can understand why, but sadly these two songs fell to something more powerful.

RoeDent

Have you changed something here? I could've sworn you had ACOS somewhere between No. 75 and 70, but it's disappeared now.

ASacrificedSon

Actually it was the best of times. I quickly edited it ;)

This is when things start getting controversial

Number 67: A Change of Seasons
This song never clicked to me at all. I mean, I still appreciate it more than the first time I heard it (that's why it's on this list), but I don't consider it their best. The only part I like is the ending: "I sit down with my son......" and the cycle repeating, just like Octavarium.

Number 66: The Root of All Evil
This is what I find to be Portnoy's weakest song on the suite. The suite is really amazing and I enjoy it very much, but Root lies as the least interesting suite for me. It is not because of the length at all, but I don't enjoy the song as much as I do with the other suites.

I mostly agree here, honestly. Although I do like a lot of the instrumental parts, and Derek's distorted organ solo thing is awesome. I also think, while not his absolute best, the long solo JP has is very good. In fact I made an instrumental version of this song, about 12 minutes long and I definitely prefer it.

And this is the only song from the suite that I actually like as a whole. :lol

We did?  I suspect most of us could do a top 75 and You Not Me wouldn't come close to making it.

Its inclusion here is...interesting. :lol

Oh, here you are A.S.S.

Would it be possible to have you go update your Opeth Discography thread that you started?

Number 65: Just Let me Breathe

Ah, here it is. All of Portnoy's songs on Infinity was about the record company or label and it's pretty damn hilarious. This song is the most interesting out of the three. Burning and New isn't on this list and I'm happy. Absolutely love the Petrucci /Sherinian duet and the MTV part. The ending is enjoyable too!

How did this abomination make it past BITS, Peruvian Skies and TROAE?  :omg:
