So, I've seen people praise Labrie and Rudess because of this albm, but for me, it doesn't click for me.
I'm more of a Petrucci kind of guy and prefer guitar solos over piano solos. That is why Black clouds is one of my favs in terms of music. Petrucci had a solo for every single song and I feel like Petrucci's solos are stronger and may I dare say it? Way better than Rudess' solo. This is all my opinions and I wanted to say it. Any thoughts on preferring Petrucci's solos over rudess'?

I, too, prefer Petrucci over Rudess. I'm just more attracted to guitar solos

Yes. Synth solos don't usually give a lot of emotion to me. Now this isn't all about The Astonishing as I'm speaking of other albums too.
If Rudess did more of the solos he did in The Best of times, I'd enjoy it. Most of his solos are, "Hey look at my technicality! I play so fast!"

As a keyboardist I am more on the other end of the spectrum I think, I love the keyboards as a whole on TA.  But I do think that some of the guitars are the most incredible ever on this new ablum. Listening to the intro solo on Saviour in the Square right now.  Brings tears to the eyes...  The combo of piano and guitar...

I will say that BC&SL is Petrucci's show. He saved a rather forgetable "AROP" with that beast of a solo.

But I think what he has done in this album is equally remarkable. JP pretty much shut up every "critic" who ever said he could do nothing but shred (or as disgustingly mislabeled by pubescent YouTubers : "Lack of Feeling")

I like both. BCSL has some of the worst JR solos in my opinion. I actually prefer his solos outside of DT more, usually. Rudess plays with lots of emotion on his solo albums. In DT a lot of the time his solos are seemingly more technical just because, and I don't know why. But I don't prefer one over the other and JP's solos on this new album are all spectacular even if many are short.

Don't care as long as they're both inspired.

I love the fact piano is present more than ever. I'm not fan of synths but piano is just beautiful and it works really well on The Astonishing.

The Presence of Frenemies

Frankly, there isn't much good soloing from either guy on BCSL, except TBOT of course (the TCOT outro is nice too).

But yeah, not much of a JR key solo fan. His solos seem to be better when they're not on his typical lead, but piano, continuum, or something else.

JP isn't the most consistent soloist either, but he nails it on the new one.

I love good songs more than good solos.

This album delivers, regardless of who is soloing.

I'm a keyboard guy yet my favourite albums are ones that lean towards being guitar heavy (BC&SL/DT12/6DOIT/Awake/TOT). It was nice to be able to hear more prominent keyboards this time though so I'm glad JR got to do this. Who knows, the next album might respond by going heavier again so I think it's great that with TA we got a keys heavy album.
