Well, it seems that JR gave away some info on Prog Magazine.

Spoilers below.

"...Gabriel and his brother Arhys are trying to bring back the values of music which they think will heal their world. It's a really detailed story that has a love theme as well and a really cool ending which I won't give away!" - JR
JR said he was glad he could tap into his more classical influences and also said: "We also have a lot of different styles that are even further outside that; we have a tango part and Eric Rigler plays bagpipes at one point"
"In addition to all the organic elements...there are also these interludes with the NOMACS...they're these futuristic Noise Machines that create their own sound and in the story, over time, machines are given the power to create music but they take it too far so it becomes this kind of noise and it's all very electronic"

Oh my, those are EXCELLENT news because I am a huge Bagpipe nerd. I love all types of Bagpipes, from the famous Great Highland ones, to smallpipes, borderpipes, Swedish säckpipa, Säckpfeifen...

NOMAC's were created at the end of Misunderstood.
JP created them.

JP is The Killing Hand.

The Astonishing is The Killing Hand, Pt. 2 confirmed.

This makes me VERY excited, that's exactly what I was hoping for

Train of Naught

@ mikemangioy yeah I caught those on the DT reddit, great news. I'm a sucker for the tango section in TMV's L'Via L'Viaquez so this definitely makes me hyped.

I had a feeling it might be in the printed magazine, or perhaps the online subscription service that magazine offers.

Tantalising little tidbits there though. (Alliteration  :metal) The NOMAC tracks will be interludes then, rather than full songs. I suspect they won't be too long either, perhaps all under 1:30, if not shorter. Gives room for some more length for some of the other songs.

It's whahíbrido pickingant. What else is there to explain?

Or, start here: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=45270.0 (from the OP, but it gets funny towards the bottom of page 3).

We took that and ran with it here: https://www.dreamtheaterforums.org/boards/index.php?topic=45294.0

I hope that's legit, because I really want to hear some different style influences, and guest musicians again.

Lord Noxxon has spoken, so it's true.

Songs where NOMACs have appeared...
A Change of Seasons
Misunderstood
A Nightmare to Remember
A Rite of Passage

My investigation had led to these conclusions, can anyone elaborate on their thoughts?

RMGadelha

Then I really can't wait for the Bagpipes. I just wonder if it will be any other pipes other than the Great Highland ones. Arjen used Uilleann pipes on the latest Ayreon album, for example.

noxon

I'm not a bagpipe afficionado. How do you tell the difference?

Well, there are hundreds of different pipes, but if you mean between the more well known Highland Pipes and Uilleann pipes, you can see the way the air is blown into the bag (blowpipe = highland, bellows = uilleann) and of course how the chanter and drones sound. Highland pipes also only reach 9 notes, uilleann has more I believe. I love both, but if you want a more mellow sound, uilleann is your pick.

In this video you can compare the two different sounds:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fNhWxH_NUh8

EDIT: You can't hear the Great Highland drones on that video. I think he might have plugged it due to the tuning. The drones you hear are the Uilleann pipes only, I think. The chanter is what plays the melody, and you can clearly hear the difference here.

I fucking hate the sound of bagpipes. Here's hoping those sections are short and buried under JP guitar.

Here's hoping the sound is as loud as possible just for my delight and to annoy you :)

Or what about an 8 minute track featuring only bagpipes and James yodelling on top? That would be epic!

Looks like the guy they hired is a superstar, most of his credits seem to be Uilleann, not that I have any expertise though.
