I real some guitar fóruns and  some People saying  petrucci can t make inaane shred solos. I need you opinion    about jp leve skills
1 level.  Petrucci is one of the most skiled shredders  He can play whahíbrido pickingant to
2 level.  He can shred but not in the same level others players
3 level. He can t shred

i saw a lot of others shredders like buckethead, govan, tosin abasi. They all fantástic players but i can t see nothing petrucci can t do. Ok i never saw jp slapping but i Don t think it s that hard or 8 fingers tapping or hybrid picking. All this technique i think jp can play if he want what you think about It?

EraVulgaris

Petrucci is the only person I know that can play whahíbrido pickingant, so there is that.

noxon

Technique is not all about how fast and what type of shredding you do. I see these people claiming to play the fastest shredding solos ever, clocking "flight of the bumblebee" at 600bpm+. Does it sound good? Not at all.

Shredding isn't just about speed, its about tone and melody as well. JP is quite fast. Not the fastest in the world. He's also got a very good sense of tasteful melodies, which is what (imo) makes him one of the most interesting guitarists in the "shredding" category. And he's got excellent techniques for what he does well - even though he doesnt do all the same techniques that some other guitarists use.

rumborak

The only people faster are people like Rusty Cooley, but who needs that. That's just finger exercises from there on.

mikeyd23

Yeah noxon and rumborak are pretty spot on. The appeal of JP, for me, has always been his ability to a lot of different things well. Shredding and playing fast is one of those things, but that alone doesn't make a complete player. The combination of JP's technical ability, sense of melody, and phrasing style is what hooked me on his playing.

BlobVanDam

I don't think JP plays quite as fast or cleanly as the best "shredders", but I dislike those kinds of players for valuing speed and flash too highly over melody and taste. That's not to say these are mutually exclusive things, but I find that none of them balance all of the elements as well as JP.

wideworldofmike

He is a world class musician and songwriter. If he saw a need to 8 finger tap I'm sure he would do it, but it probably doesn't serve his music if he's not doing it.

palmeiras

Others players like buckethead, govan only focus in his solo guitar albuns and jp in dream theater. Petrucci solos is aways  writed tô make the song better and  not only to show his ability. Lo Ok the stream of consciousness solo. Its insane shred or blind faith unieon that is harder than any 8 fingers tapping or slap technique

Even JP's balance has shifted over the years. It most notably started on ToT, where he did a lot more shredding, and ever since his bluesy side has been somewhat subdued.

True, although I still find him a more tasteful player than the other big shredders even now. I do miss the bluesy side though. There was a decent amount on Suspended Animation, and the G3 DVD has a lot of tasty playing on it, which really stood out when contrasted directly against Vai.

I cannot bear Steve Vai or Joe Satriani. They're the guitarist versions of Mangini.

100% technique. Almost no emotion.

I've yet to hear Vai or Stach play anything as uplifting and melodic as The Best Of Times solo - at least without sprinkling it with " hey look what i can do " tricks.

I can´t agree for Satch here. In my opinion, in G3s with JP, his solos were almost always more inspired and emotional then JPs.

Jp is realy a balanced player.  But the point is when JP shreds he kicks ass like train of  thougth. Watch acid rain live when he play incredible fast or lost not forgotten solo intro

mikeyd23

I've never been that into Vai, although he is clearly a great guitarist. Satch on the other hand can definitely play some very tasteful, bluesy stuff.

Stadler

I think what matters to me most is his ability to play in an ensemble.  He does all those runs and licks often in unison with JR.   I think that is more impressive, how he can do it not just on his "own timetable" (in my opinion, a lot of the shredders get a little loose with time when they are at full speed) but in synch with the rest of the band.

Agreed.  It s much harder play unisons like JP and JR than only play alone

Alright, I have to ask now.  What is "whahíbrido pickingant?"

Vibrato picking hand? Wide hybrid picking hand?

And I'll agree with what as already been said. What makes John great is songwriting and his versatility.

Maybe he just doesn't know how to spell Yngwie Malmsteen.

Sir GuitarCozmo

Oh, and here's my guitar tech, Yngwie Malmsteen.  Yeah, I found him in a ditch, rotting away.  He told me he had a career once.  I don't believe a word that comes out of his fat mouth.  He just eats cheesecakes all day.

Don't be such a pussy.

Ynwgie, shut up.

Prog Snob

I wonder if Yngwie ever saw those. We know JP did because he mimicked the voice on Chaos In Motion.

Sir GuitarCozmo

If Yngwie had, there's no way you would still be able to view them on Youtube.  :lol

Prog Snob

Good point. :lol

That reminds me of the Pantera video where they're teasing Yngwie with donuts, or something to that effect.

Sir GuitarCozmo

I have to go find that one.  Sounds awesome.

bl5150

Yngwie will unleash the fucking fury when he sees this thread.

I went along to the G3 with Petrucci very much expecting it to be the Petrucci and Satch show and IMHO Vai blew both of them away with his playing AND stage presence.  I had gone off Vai at that point (just too weird/self indulgent) but on the night I saw them he was on fire.

Kotowboy

I'm not a fan of any of their guitars but the JPMM shape is just way way way nicer than that FUGLY Ibanez Jem.
