I really want a DVD of the band playing the entire album in the studio with proper direction and editing like a live DVD a la St Anger.

That would be amazing.
I likr those studio live performances. We can see all band is capable of and they are maximally contentrated on playing, not entertainmening the crowd. Some might say they are always like that :lol but still, I think JLB would especially shine.
So I'm for it :)

Kotowboy

It doesn't even have to be all in one take. It could be each song performed live until they have the best versions.

mikeyd23

Yeah, I'd love that as well. I listen to the St. Anger live performances from that DVD more than the studio album.

Lucien

Rush's Xanadu appears on the studio album Farewell to Kings as a live studio recording, done in one take (on the first take, if I remember correctly!)

I would love that too. I really like to see the creation and writting of the songs and there's been so long since they did something like that...

Kotowboy

I'm always a bit letdown when a band release a deluxe edition of their album in a gatefold digipak with a CD and a DVD of the making of then the next album has nothing.

Mastodon's Making of Crack The Skye DVD was 90 minutes of studio recording and interviews.

then The Hunter had like 5 minutes of studio stuff and Once More Round The Sun had nothing.

AboutToCrash

I just want a systematic chaos style documentary again! That was awesome

Another_Won

I think an in-studio documentary is even more important with (what we think will be) a concept album.  I think that concept albums raise more questions than a regular release.  Now they have a perfect excuse to include one with the release and why they haven't on previous recent releases.

Paintbox

I watched The making of Systematic chaos before I actually heard the album and while a lot of you seem to hate it I like it. This kind of documentaries always make me appreciate more the album of which it's about. I'd love a "making of" of the upcoming album, and they kinda have to since it would be the first with Mangini

2 disc making of DVD.

Disc 1 : An Depth 90 minute in studio diary of recording of DT13. Includes performances and interviews and much more !!

Disc 2 : An in depth 90 minute in studio diary of the setting up Mike Mangini's drumkit in real-time.

Not sure if you mean the album or the documentary, but I'd say that most here agree that the making of SC is one of the band's best bonus materials to date. If you mean the album itself though, yeah that one isn't a favorite around here (although I think it's great).

Would 90 minutes be enough for disc 2?
Anyway, the problem now is that was Portnoy who loved that kind of stuff, and Jordan always made very short videos. He could at least put something on YouTube as he used to...

As much as I would want making of DVD, I think there are small chances. We know it was Portnoy's thing. Still, maybe they kept it quiet during writing and recording process and now they'll want to make up for it with some studio footage. Time will tell.

BlackInk

If it does turn out to be a double concept album, with a making of documentary included, then JP have really started taking cues from his nephew.

Progmetty

How could it turn out to be a double concept album though?! How long have they been in the studio to conceive something the big epic scale that the recent updates suggest it is?

Kotowboy

They entered the studio in February I believe.  And the album isn't out for a few months still.

Long enough.

Guys.

What if the making of documentary IS the album?

Then the album would be the making of documentary.

The title of dreamtheater.net = "new album out now | official site", you can see it for a brief second before it forwards to "dreamtheater.net/dt"
You can see the old dt taxi screen for a split second as well, so maybe it's just the former "new album out now" page that is displaying.

Yeah, that's it. Similar to the "News" strip at the top of the forum. :p

I miss the good old days when a band announced a release date and the album hit the stores and then announced the tour.  No BS.

In today's world that cannot happen.  It is all about marketing, but sometimes it gets a bit ridiculous.

Back to the topic.  I like the idea of a double album with both themes.  Hope this is not just an app or video game.

In the good old, old, days, at least for me, I walked in to the music store at the mall and saw a band's new album on the shelves, and bought it without knowing a thing about it. Maybe when I looked through the liner notes, I found out they had a new member (as it happened when I bought SFaM).
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

I hear that.  We used to have a store in STL called Now Hear This, where you could find hard-to-find CDs, and they always had a listing every week of CDs coming out soon. I remember it was there that I found out about the Once in a LiveTime double CD release.  Ah, the good ole days. :hat

I did the same thing. I always watch the making of first before listening to the album. It makes me get more into the album.

Mosh

I watched the making of SC before listening to it as well. Honestly the album was even more disappointing than it might've been otherwise after that.

Funny you should mention that.  When I lived in Hollywood, there was a large CD store that allowed me to get any CD out there.  If they didn't have it, they'd order it.  Japanese imports mostly.  And just yesterday I passed that old place, but of course it isn't there any longer.  That sense of "I was so young and innocent and now some of that is gone forever" hit me.

But in reality, it is much easier to get those things now, so ....

I had a dream last night, new album came out, and it was mostly composed of Steven Wilson's songs covers, and DT original songs were prog rock like SW
I think I cried in the
dream xD

This dream made me think, they were talking about change in style, guys. They may even 100% abandon their metal side for this album... Things like that are highly unlikely, but definitely possible...

I'd like to hear their real prog rock album. But unfortunately (or fortunately), I think they took direction towards modern prog (their style of modern prog) with everything, not just musically. It's not important but look at their promo photos since ToT era, they are getting darker and darker, looking more and more metal. Or is it just JP with his guns :lol What I'm trying to say is: they don't even think about making prog rock, this type of music they are making is present for many years, I don't think they'll ever maky drastic shift in direction. I know they are progressive metal but it's very different from prog rock.
However, that would be interesting and I'd like to hear (but I can't even imagine it). It would be cool to hear song in vain of Camel, with Moog keyboard, strong melodies, guitar solos with classic rock vibe...
This is what I would like to hear: song that is build around strong vocal melodies and vocals in general. Yes, they did cool ballads on ADTOE and DT but I need more. I always feel like vocal melodies are the least important thing to them. JLB's solo band use his voice much better IMO.

Well, I became a fan during the spring / summer of 1999, and I didn't have internet back then, so all I knew (who knows where I've read it) was that on a specific day the new Dream Theater album would have been released, and I've already decided for a blind purchase.

That the new DT album was out that day was exactly all the information I had.

Imagine what it was like entering the store looking for whatever new album DT had put out, and only then and there reading the title: METROPOLIS PT. 2.  :omg: :o
