I'm thinking it will be a 3 CD set. You know, one CD for each 10 years? :xbones :metal :metal :metal

hefdaddy42

I predict that it will be more proggy than the last album.

I'm still predicting tomorrow they'll throw us an update.  Here's hoping anyway.

comment

Well my dates are off.  Let's see if last nights dream helps.  I dreamt that Dream Theaters next album would be a concept album.  It was something that had been worked on in 07' and again in 10' or something.  That would be cool to find they have some magnum opus they've squirreled away and have been refining over time.

So I'm predicting concept album.

pffft. This is Dream Theater we're talking about....

..30 CD album  :metal
1 song on each disc lasting 75 mins.

rush-signals

I predict the drums will sound like a drum machine again.

Thoughtspart3

Please don't sat that.  The drum sound really detracted from my enjoyment of the last album, especially the snare.  I even tried to ignore it thinking I was being too picky but I have a hard time doing it.

GasparXR

I predict that the upcoming album will be their 13th. Also, it will be by Dream Theater. In addition, it will contain musical notes, and will be X minutes long where X is the length of the music on the CD. You heard it here first!

I would like nothing better to be proven wrong, but MM is a really hard hitter who likes super-tight snares. I too suspect the new album will sound similar to DT12 in terms of drums.
That said, if they could just recreate the BTFW drum sound, that would go a long way.

Okay... So now their on tour.  A bit peeved they didn't release an update when they finished in the studio.  Last word was in Feb, so...  I predict we'll hear something from the road, guess that's how it's going to be.  Here's wishing for better PR coverage!

Who said they finished?

rumborak

Depends on your definition of "finished". Are they done recording? Absolutely. JR said weeks ago that he was going back in for some touch-ups. That's something yiu do at the end of recording, or even after that.
Are they done with mixing? Likely. Mastering might still be in the process, who knows.

comment

Yeah, who knows.  I missed JP's touch ups comment.  I just thought we'd hear something more is all.

?

From the thread for the opening night of the tour:
Quote from: fillow on June 26, 2015, 02:00:27 AM
Before CIAW James said they're gonna play songs from each album on this tour and they did.
Later on he said they're working on the album, which is not 100% finished yet, but will be right after this tour. Planned release date is Jan 2016 and then obviously a world tour (he also promiced to come in Minsk again on that tour, but that's probably what he would say at any show).

I predict more complaining about the drum sound and overall production quality.

You and me both.  As much as I like both ADTOE and DT12, both don't sound as good as they should. For a band that has been around as long as DT has, there is no excuse for them releasing records that sound that muddy (ADTOE) or loud (DT12).  Thank God for the HD versions. :tup :tup

NotePad

Since the last album was very guitar based in comparison to most other albums, I predict they will continue in that direction. Only this time it will be darker. There will be more raw sounding riffs that will be more hard hitting and to the point, for DT at least ;p.

Im not saying it will be Awake part 2, I don't see them ever doing something that raw or dark again, but it will be more riff-ey like Awake except polished. Labrie won't sing so softly this time. His voice will have more rasp but other than that he won't challenge himself or do anything as impressive as he did on Awake or I&W.

I consider there to be two categories for DT albums: the albums like I&W and the albums like Awake.
Albums like I&W: SFAM, ADToE, Systematic Chaos to name a few
Albums !like Awake: 8vM, FII, Dt12, ToT to name a few....
Yea I know, but its how my mind works....

I predict their next album to fall Into the Awake category. Most songs will be between 4 and 7 minutes, with no songs longer then 9 minutes. There also won't be so much keyboard wankery. JR will p!ay more for mood and atmosphere.

CDrice

I think the next album will be called ''Vocals into Infinity''. They'll write the album as they usually do, but for the recording each member will play their parts with only their voices. That's why the album will be out next year instead of this one. It's because this process takes a bit more time than what they usually do!

...and also because it's a quintuple album with each CDs containing a single 58 minutes songs...

I think that SC would be thrilled to be associated with I&W.

I don't remember where and when, but I read that ToT is basically IAW gone all metal.

JR said it would something a little different. I predict that upon hearing it I will disagree with his assessment.

I would love to be proved wrong.

Well, well... my prediction about an all vocal album is getting more plausible then.    ;D

I think it is impossible to say simply because we have no idea where they are in the process.
True, but this forum wouldn't be DTF without baseless speculation.
Ain't that the truth.

Whether that's truth is pure speculation.

Yo dawg, we heard you like speculation, so we put speculation in your speculation so you can speculate your speculation while your speculation speculates speculation.

Can I speculate about all of these things?

The Curious Orange

I predict the new album will do away with all the compression, brickwalling and loudness-warring that has plagued recent albums, and will be a real audiophile quality release. You know, on the CD version, and not the Hi-Res FLAC download version or some other sh1t.

But I expect I will be wrong.

Cedar redaC

I think it would be cool to see Dream Theater experiment into some new territory, like electronic music or even something crazy like big band. I thinking they'd find a way to be innovative and tasteful about it.

But seriously, I'll get the new album no matter what direction they take.

This was correct, thanks to the NOMAC tracks and Three Days (although it's more swing than Big Band).

Was kind of true, though instead of being worked on for 5-8 years (lolnuggets), it was worked on for 2.5.

This was true from a certain point of view. Not as many long songs or as much technicality, but has more varied song structures, diversity, subtle compositional complexity and recurring themes that are aspects of a very proggy album.

And I have no inside information, but I am expecting a double CD. Serious.

True.

There were some surprisingly accurate predictions here.
