On an unrelated note, prog fans really do over-analyze these things to death. :lol

You wanna hear over-analysis? I submit to you:

What's with JR's shaving accident on his head? They couldn't cover that for the video shoot?

/thread

I was wondering that same thing.  Maybe a piece of the looking glass nicked his head when it shattered.

I was wondering whether that was the reason they mostly just showed his fingers.

Nice vid.  I'm so proud of my 15-year-old son, speaking of this song.  Just yesterday on our way to a Boy Scout meeting we were listening to the song, and he said how the beginning definitely has a "Rush feeling" to it.  Then today on Blabbermouth, it mentions JP saying that it is definitely a little homage to Rush.

I've taught my son well.

And also why there is so little of JMX.  He could have dove in front of JR to save him from a bigger piece of looking glass shard.

Nah cuz they could have used John Myung Mark Eleven... JMXI

Woman's acting is just terrible. Other than that it's pretty good video considering DT's standards.

Either way, it explains his elusiveness in the video.  JP's bear arm should have swatted the shard down, but he was too busy wondering why the palantir wasn't the same color as in the movie.

Zook

I don't like music videos, so this was meh to me. Plus as others have said, the girl may have been super duper hot, but she was totally pointless. Reminded me of I think a Linkin Park video where a hot girl is just wandering around pretending to look for something. Stupid. I'll take the ultra cheesy Lie video over this any day, but I'd rather just listen to the song than watch a video of it.

lol the Lie video is without a doubt worse. At least in The Looking Glass I can watch them play their instruments without feeling like the camera man is on acid.

I'm still wondering whether they actively muted JR's initial piano run.

Viking of the Sagas

The woman looks like she's holding a palantír.

It would have been ideally awesome to get the I & W girl to look into the palantir. This girl is really pretty though, so anyway...

Very cool video and probably their best.  I'm glad Leslie Nielsen didn't make it into this video.  He's still sleeping at that traffic light. This video is more up close and personal which is something they should always do with their videos.

gentaishinigami

Video was alright, girl was super cute.  A Rite of Passage is still my favorite video of theirs at this point.

Dublagent66

Pretty cool vid and probably the best song on the album.  Good song choice for a video.

Octavarious

Scenes filmed in studio are nice, sometimes very effective, but the (very nice) girl is pointless, and acts like she was under heavy drugs... The overall storyboarding of the video is non-existing, I would scrap the girl, leave them in studio, and do some otical tricks with these images only, to make a bit of fuss and not leaving it too flat.
In general, not a super video. At all.
Probably because this time they just couldn't show on video what JP meant with lyrics... :hat

rumborak

That's actually an interesting point. The video totally disregards the very lyrics of the song.

Don't you get it guys? We're all drooling over her being hot, and then soon we will forget, and her 15 minutes will have expired. The breaking of the crystal ball is symbolism of that. :hat

Nice.  :tup

Anywho, video was decent.  I dig the closeup on Myung during the solo and JLB's hair is looking his age at that time.  Makes him look visually something something.  I would have preferred it that when the girl dropped the ball, the band would appear in front of her and blow (poor choice of words there but I'm rolling with it) her away with the music.

Yup. What does the PMU wolf man have to do with the song?

You should ask every 80's video and then tell everybody on this post to STFU and who gives a crap. :lol

Seriously,  does anybody think they have deep pockets to make a good video?

Music videos in general have been getting cheaper lately, with less importance placed on them. This is the first music video of this DT lineup to actually have a proper band performance, instead of feeling like a bit of an afterthought.
And while most of us would have no problem with 5 minutes of the band performing in a room, music videos usually need a little something extra to add visual interest. Sure, a hot girl holding a crystal ball doesn't really have much to do with the song, but who cares? It's a nice music video. :tup

lol@ criticizing the girl's "acting". Yeah, because if there's anywhere the world turns to for Academy Award level acting, it's music videos.

Especially one that doesn't have a prayer of being played on MTV.

The vid is ok, but it's not really all that interesting. Just the band miming, and then some footage of that woman. I think they could have made so much more of it. Honestly, I much prefer the TEI vid which tells a story.

VH1 Classic still plays On The Backs Of Angels.  I saw it not too long ago after a Rush documentary.
