Man, there's a hell of a lot of new people being awfully sensitive this month.

Also, KNH is clearly winning this thread so far. :lol

Regarding TBOT. I could quite happy never see or hear it live. I don't hate the song but there's so many better songs they could be using that time to play instead.

rumborak

Pretty sure James rather get fisted onstage than singing that awful "thank you for ... MAH LIFE!" line.

TAC

Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

lol @ the poll

Anyway, the song is shelved for all eternity, or at least until they play with MP again.

Yeah i'm new to this so, you don't have to be a jerk.

Even so, you didn't think something was up when you ended up entering the same question multiple times but never entered any answers?

Still, it didn't perturb you that the poll you created didn't have any answers, but had the same question posed several times?

I don't think it'll be played lived without MP. Frankly I don't care if it ever gets played live, the song isn't that great IMO.

Ħ

If they were to play it, it would be with MP in some kind of reunion show. They'd probably play the AA suite too.

Also, It's always been a fantasy of mine that they do a special concert (well, now with Portnoy, as I had the idea prior to his depature) where they close the first set with "Finally Free" (with extended drum soloing through the outro), then the static goes through the intermission, then the 2nd set starts with all 55+ minutes of the Twelve-Step Suite, and as "The Shattered Fortress" fades out, they go in to a short piano/violin duet leading in to "The Best Of Times". This would be the 2nd set, and the encore would be "A Change Of Seasons". A shame this will never happen, though...

That's one concert I would sooooo stay away from.

I'm kinda bummed this thread has taken on a more serious TONE...but...

If they ever did do a reunion with MP I doubt they would put such a huge focus on him because hasn't that become a big bone of contention?

Why?! It's obvious that DT has turned the page.  Maybe years down the line but this thread is just fan goobly goo, wishy washy stuff.

Time to stop dreaming and be in the now.

Tis BOOLsheet

This topic has come up a number of times recently. I don't understand the heightened interest in it really. And anyway, I thought I was in the minority of people who thought this song was one of the best (if not THE) start-to-finish, on the album.

It's not getting played without MP...ever. Consequently, unless there is a guest appearance, it will never be played. That is unfortunate for me as a fan, because I feel that is one of the greatest guitar solos ever played, but that is the way it is.

The AA suite is one of the most bloated monstrosities ever. Even MP later admitted with gnashing teeth that it had become a chore to complete.
And TBOT is just not a good song, and worse, wrapped in yet another Rush "tribute".

No, not really.

The most I can see is bringing him on stage for a song or two, like they did with CD and DS at the WDADR show.  Anything more than that is beyond my comprehension.

JiM-Xtreme

I don't see why the band should steer clear of playing songs from the twelve step suite, but IMO playing TBOT live without MP would be utterly disrespectful to him.

I don't either, and neither does the band, apparently, since they did TROAE on their last tour.

The whole suite played in its entirety, though, I doubt will ever happen.  One song is one song, but the whole batch together has MP written all over it.

Agreed, that's what I meant  :P nothing wrong with playing individual songs from the suite, but since MP made it pretty clear that his aim was to perform the whole thing live it would be quite disrespectful of the band to go ahead and play it without him.

King Postwhore

I just think that playing the whole suite will not happen because it is so personal to MP.  Like Hef said they'll do a song here and there but not the whole suite.  I'm hoping they do The Glass Prison this tour.

That would be great to hear live again.  Excepting Repentence it's my favorite of the AA Suite.

I guess there's actually people who like the AA suite from beginning to end, but it always struck me that one key allure of it was "This is 55 minutes of uninterrupted audio! So Dream Theater! So prog!"
Kinda the monster truck of prog. Big for the sake of big, and mostly something you tell your friends about that you witnessed it.

That was actually the beginning of my post.

ToT-147

Here something no one has mentioned: they've play TROAE, WIMH and TTTSTA.. So I'm not saying it's the same thing, but they are not just closed the door to "MP songs".. I put the quotes because, well, we all know he only added the lyrics to the most of those songs.. BUT, TBOT is not just like those other songs.. TBOT was composed particularly to be dedicated to someone, and to someone very special to Portnoy, and because of his decease (no more no less).. He actually wrote it before it happens, and I've read somewhere that he even play it for him..

Moreover, I personally wouldn't like to see DT playing the song live without MP.. And the same goes to the whole 12SS.. I just think they can simply continue selecting songs they like, in this more "free" way (and not like when MP was in the band, that everything was calculated.. Great job that one btw).. Even HTF has this personal stuff going on, but it's from ToT, and I really like it more than TBOT, so that would be awesome to me..

Finally, I do will choose between the two options.. And my vote goes to the first question (whatever the point of the poll is), since the other one it's too general.. If someone will ask it to them, they can easily answer: "Yeah, we got a lot of plans with that song.. We'll hear it a couple of times, then we'll edited some parts, change the lyrics a little... Yeah, definitely, that's our plan..." You know they always elude that type of questions.. Especially JP...

I don't know the goal of this poll, again, but it has generated all this interesting debate.. I'll give it this face then:  :tup
