Sorry if this has been mentioned before but the Black Clouds album has been, as Trotsky once said, consigned to the dustbin of history. As there was no DVD from that tour you would have thought there would have been a few things from that on the new DVD, but no!

There's a number of tracks on Luna Park I could do without again. In fact, this was the mistake that ELP made a few times on their DVD's.

Shadow2222

Unfortunately, I am inclined to agree in a sense. Where WIMH/TTTSTA and TSCO are, AROP and Wither could have been. I understand the length of the other songs makes them hard to fit into a setlist, plus they may never play TSF or TBOT, but at least the two shorter songs would've been appreciated.

Super Dude

I kinda see BCSL as being largely MP's album anyway, so I kinda understand it. After all, that was just before he left, probably same deal MP had with playing SDV after KM left.

Hopefully they go back to Black Clouds for this tour and release a DVD from it. Since it's Evening With, I could even see them getting ANTR or TCOT in there plus Wither.

Sycsa

I'm only bugged about ANTR. After the drummer auditions, I was really looking forward to hearing/seeing it on a live release. Mangini blast beat, James singing the "Day after day" part like they originally intended, these would have been majorly interesting.

As for ELP, I only care for their '70s releases, but why oh why did they have to ruin Pictures with those trippy effects. Something I'll probably never get over.

tarkusman

Yes, the Pictures film was a disaster and the cartoon things was a part of that. As far as I am aware the band had little or no input into that. By the way, the second ed of the ELP book The Show That Never Ends is now out - which I co-wrote  - couldn't resist the plug.

Sycsa

Thanks for letting me know, I'll definitely check it out.

Tis BOOLsheet

I would have preferred ANTR, BoT (not happening), CoT, maybe even TSF over 6:00, TDET, TSCO (on too much already), AFIL

TAC

With the Evening With format, I definitely expect BC&SL to be represented.

They DID play TCOT in the Summer 2011 dates so it has not been completely forgotten.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related
Quote from: Stadler on February 08, 2025, 12:49:43 PMI wouldn't argue this.

GasparXR

I really doubt it has anything to do with BC&SL being MP's last album as the reason they didn't play it. They didn't feature anything from FII or TOT on LALP either.

I would have liked ANTR and TCOT over TSCO, and SDOIT, and a few others, for the reasons mentioned. They've already been included so many times. And I would have loved to have heard those BCASL songs with this lineup, with MM. Really it just comes down to those songs being so long.

But I'm glad to have good live recordings of 6:00, TDEN and AFIL, so I have no problems at all with their inclusion. :tup

The Letter M

The only reason I don't mind seeing repeated songs again is that this show has MM on drums. New members make it ok for song repeats, which is why I don't mind the DOZEN versions of Metropolis we have on official and YtseJam Records releases.

I still have high hopes that their Sonic Summer Festival shows get released as professional sound/video was recorded, as evidenced by AROP and Wither YouTube clips. That show had those songs, ANTR and TCOT, along with POW, so that would cover FIVE songs that haven't been released on live albums.

Either way, I would love to see them play some BC&SL and FII songs on the next tour, just to mix things up a little. And also "Octavarium" and/or "A Change Of Seasons".

Yes - 6:00 and The Dark Eternal Night are the two I am most excited about hearing. Caught In A Web also.

Plus I'm hoping that the CD versions end up on Spotify so I can make a Dramatic Live playlist ;D

Edit - It would be nice to see Octavarium with Mangini on the kit - but Score probably has the definitive version of that song.

I plan on doing this, as well, but cutting out, cross-fading and mixing all the ADTOE tracks together, in album order, and making my own personal mix of the live songs as an album. I know it's "cheating" and not a full live album in the sense that we have live recordings of WDADU, IAW, SFAM and 8VM, but it'll still be awesome to hear! I just want the live versions of FFH/BAI/BTS all together! I hope the live album plays out in a way that I can do this easily and it'll sound good, although depending on how the intro of BITS goes, it'll be interesting to see how that works. The same goes with BMUBMD going in to LNF.

Oh yeah, CIAW too. A nice heavier mix will sound great on that one. Do they have a backing tape for the chorus harmonies? I think that would sound empty with just the main line.

 :o Well, i've tried looking - but - I can't seem to find a 2DVD 3CD version of LALP on *DVD*.

Does it even exist ?

TheGreatPretender

I'm more concerned with the whole thing because having not played BCSL songs all last tour reminds me of when bands don't bother playing anything from their previous album. So like, imagine if on the next tour, they didn't play anything from ADTOE, and on the following tour, they didn't play anything from DT12. I hope this won't become a pattern, but I have seen it from several bands, ignoring their most recent past releases, I guess with the idea that they've already played a lot of songs from those albums on their previous tours.

DarkLord_Lalinc

I understand the Luna Park show setlist. MP was really the only "We gotta have most DT songs on DVD", so if he were still in the band by the time they recorded a new DVD the set would have been much more different. But the thing with the Luna Park setlist, is that it's a very standard-effective Dream Theater show that works wonders to reassure the fans that Mike Mangini is a great inclusion to the band. We, as hardcore fans, miss MP's rotating setlist/different songs on every DVD thing obviously, but I can see why they chose the songs they chose.

Tick

I think it will return in time. I would have thought Dark Eternal Night was a Mike song but they played that so...

But they did play songs from BC&SL. They played TCOT earlier on the last tour. They didn't play it on the final leg, though.

I'm not upset about them leaving BC&SL out from the setlist. It would've been cool to see ANTR live, but I like the setlist they played better. Maybe because I had never seen DT live and seeing them play songs like TSCO or WIMH/TTTSTA was still a new, never-lived-before experience for me.

Man, if this was the case I would be looking forward to Luna Park even more. Hell, I'd take anything over AFIL. I mean it's not bad, but I personally like pretty much every song in the JLB era better than any song on WDaDU. I guess I can look on the bright side and look forward to MM playing 6:00, namely the intro lick. Should be cool.

I don't think that'll happen this time, because the band members still seem to be very happy with ADTOE and the songs on that album are shorter than on BC&SL, which makes it easier to represent ADTOE in the setlist. Besides, I'm sure they don't want to ignore their debut with MM this quickly, especially because it was very successful.

Personally, I've always viewed Black Clouds as being the Petrucci album.  The large majority of the running time is JP penned songs, and it has some of what I think are his best guitar moments, like the solo in TBOT and the entirety of TCOT.

I wish that TCOT was going to be on the new dvd.  That is the one DT song that I wanted on there more than any other.

Unfortunately not :(

When it comes to BC&SL, I really hope they'll play ANTR on the next tour. It's not my favourite from BC&SL, but since it's shorter than TCOT, the possibility that they'll play it might be higher and I imagine it to be ENERGY and POWAH live, especially with MM on drums.

KevShmev

Except for The Count... at the beginning of the tour, nothing from BC&SL was played on the ADTOE tour, and the Luna Park release is a reflection of that tour, so it makes sense that nothing from BC&SL would be on it.

The whole "But this song was already on a live DVD" thing is so overblown.  Who cares if a song was already on a previous release?  It's that kind of thinking that made Score have such an average set list (and why I never bought it).  And for someone like me, who now doesn't own any of the live DVDs post-LSFNY (except for the Bucharest bootleg), getting The Spirit Carries On out of the context of the Scenes story will be nice.

hefdaddy42

Not sure why this is all of a sudden a big enough deal to make a thread about.  We've known the setlist of these shows, and that whole leg of the tour, for over a year now.

And I wouldn't worry about it becoming any kind of trend.  It just is what it is.  And frankly, it works out for me, because I find the lyrics for TCOT cringe-worthy, and ANTR and AROP can jump in a lake.  And TSF and TBOT will likely never be played live anyway.

I like Wither, though.  But that gives us something to look forward to.

Yes, but if we didn't have TSCO, then we wouldn't have had all the fun with her:
