I have not been let down in the slightest. Dream Theater continues to move forward while staying true to what they are and that is a hugely positive sign for me. What really blows my mind is the power behind the music. It has taken a big step up.

My wish is that someday the "goofy" keyboard moments will go away, but it not this day.

Agreed.  In a song this heavy and straight-forward, some of those Jordan-esque keyboard sounds (like after the first chorus) sounded a bit out of place, but we'll see if they grow on me.

Onno

First of all, AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, so here's what I think of it. Great lyrics (if they indeed are the ones Blob posted). The mix is the best since FII and Awake, APART from the vocals, which are a bit low. It's heavy and incredibly technical but also accessible, which is good. MM completely tears my face of with his awesome drumming, holy shit. The unison parts are AMAZING! The solos are super epic and James' vocals are awesome. I can hear the bass which is great, and JM is awesome. The snare sound is a bit weird, but it's just a low tuned snare I guess. Overall: GREAT SINGLE!

The word 'awesome' has due to this post become my most used word in the English language.

Loved the song. Bye.

Also, HOW LONG TILL I CAN POST THIS REPLY? XD Everytime I try it the " Warning - while you were typing..." bit comes up.

I predict this will hit my workout mix. This makes me want to go lift weights or something.

I FREAKING LOVE IT AFTER 1 LISTEN!

I  get a total MEGADETH vibe into and after the first verse.  but then the chorus just blows me away and great finish.  perfect first release.  i loved OTBOA and i feel this is a better single than that!!

This song is great.  Crazy rhythms, love the instrumental section, and Mangini is unbelievable.  Very catchy and accessible without either losing sight of the things that make them Dream Theater, or running too long and becoming redundant.  If this is not one of the best songs on the record (as is usually the case for their Roadrunner-era singles), then I'm very, very optimistic about the new album.

Sounds great after my first listen, which is a good sign for me I think, since I usually take a good few listens before I get a feel for a song. Loving the guitar sound, though JLB seems to be mixed a bit low at times maybe.

Growing on me on third pass. Crazy technical stuff and wonderful chorus. However, less memorable than OTBOA but way too early for final judgement. Production is not as rich in chocolate as I hoped.

Only gripe about this is that JM isn't audible enough...

This. I'm straining to hear JM. Hopefully he will have more shining moments in the rest of the album.

I was too lazy to turn this feature off and now I can't post my damn replies  :lol

And my only reaction is HOT DAMN

I loved it! The guitars are loud but I can deal with it.  The chorus was a bit predictable, but enjoyable and  :metal nontheless. Loved the hell outta the intro and instrumental section :metal

Keep in mind it's a more straight up metal track, so the bass is following the guitar riff more, which makes it harder to distinguish, but it's definitely there.

Yup, I also got that Megadeth vibe from parts of the song. It's fucking awesome, I totally wasn't expecting an intro like that  :metal

This is awesome!!! MM is really coming into his own.

Some may disagree, but I really like the snare choice/mix. Very pillow-y....almost sounds like an electronic kit reminiscent of Images And Words, namely Metropolis (but not flooded in reverb as was the "in" sound for older metal.)

Going to listen again...and again and again!!

Mangini said the Rich Chycki told him to detune it so it sounds bigger.

Very interesting...thanks for the explanation! Good advice for MM...gives his kit some originality.

The stream didn't work, and now the whole page disappeared. Yay! Should've used Youtube like Haken.

Heretic

Actually pretty happy with this. It has a lot of energy, which is nice to hear, as I was expecting something by-the-numbers from the one or two reviews I've seen.

While the song structure and the type of song it is isn't quite original, it's still a great melodic prog metal song, and the instrumental section feels right instead of feeling random.

Cool.

All I can say is Awesome!!!! Wish I was at home to listen to this in my studio with quality monitors. I have nice headphones here in the office and it sounds awesome though them. I can only imagine how good it is gonna sound at home in my studio.
On to my 4th listen.

Nefarius

First Listen Reactions:

Might this be the worst DT track ever? :sadpanda:

Mindless chugga chugga, not really a riff only rhythm, vocals completely buried, snare sounds artificial, bland rhythm guitar tone, no bass, forgettable melody, a few hooks and melodies that are much too close to older songs, nothing left after 6:17 except "hmmm... sad".

Nice display of MM's technicality. Slighly chocolate cake tone on JP's solo. Interesting breathing space in the solo section.

Other than that it sounds more like a younger metal band channeling DT. Utterly skippable track.

I'll be back after listening to it one more time.

Greetings...
Nef

It does have many characteristics similar to OtBoA though

It has the same structure. And oddly JPs tone is the same. Its an amazingly awesome song, but it really does sound like OTBoA, just more heavier and technical.
