ITPOE just touched my top 10 (#12) when I did mine. You Not Me is too low..

ITPOE missed my top 50, mainly because by splitting it into two tracks killed much of the power of the song.  As for You Not Me...it's in my top 50, I still think the track gets much flak because of how it was written more than what was written.

I know what #1 will be but I don't want to spoil it  :lol

Scorpion

While that is certainly commendable, I believe that I already did so in my very first post in this thread. Sorry. :lol

#1 better be what I think it is. This is your one chance to redeem yourself :P

If you're talking about #1 worst, it's probably not. :P
Quote from: Crow on July 09, 2024, 06:34:55 PMoh yeah you're gonna have a super bad time in my electronic roulette.

ITPOE is my number one, excellent pick!

You Not Me is actually good. But I have a strange love for alternative rock.

I'm talking #1 best, so I remain hopefull!

The list of the worst songs has been pretty on-point, though have you considered giving more recognition to songs such as BMUBMD? I agree with most of your choices for this.

I couldn't see the Octavarium choices as being top 10 though.

Not sure what you mean by this...

BMUBMD is okay. I loved it when the album first came out, but it got really old fast.
I think I like the Red song that it ripped off better, to be honest. :P

Alright guys, final update time. Thanks for following this until the end guys, hopefully you didn't rage too much at my weird placements.

Anyways, here's where I would have a big dramatic buildup to my #1 pick, but let's be honest, you already know what it is.

So here it is.

#1 BEST:
Octavarium (Octavarium)

Quote from: Scorpion on July 08, 2013, 04:28:32 PM
Octavarium should not have the top spot.
Well too freakin' bad, 'cuz it does. Octavarium is, without a doubt, not only my favorite Dream Theater song, but my favorite song of all time. Even if you didn't see Scorpion's spoiler-tastic post at the beginning of this thread, you would have known this would be #1 if you followed my top 33 albums of all time list (which you should totally read if you haven't), where I gushed about it in my write-up for the album. In fact, I don't even need to do a write-up for this song, because I already wrote it back then!
Quote from: Buddyhunter1 on December 25, 2012, 06:27:07 PM
And then there's the final song, the 24-minute epic, the title track, Octavarium. It is, and probably will be forever, my absolute favorite song of all time. It's the musical equivalent of the greatest sex you've ever had. It starts out slow and calm, gradually increases in intensity, gets better and better as it goes on, and when it reaches its bursting point, explodes into pure bliss. Then, when it's all over, you feel absolutely satisfied and can only look back and think about what a fucking amazing experience you just had. The song is everything an epic should be. It takes its time to build up to its greatest moments. All of its movements are strong, transition together seamlessly, and just get better and better with each one. It has the best flow of any song I've ever heard, and the most epic, satisfying grand finale ever written. Hell, I even love the lengthy Sine On You Crazy Diamond intro. I love every second of the song. All 1,440 of them.
Yeah, what I said. Favorite DT song, favorite song of all time. The end.

All right, now that that's out of the way, let's get to the opposite end of the spectrum. My least favorite Dream Theater song of all time. It probably won't be what you're expecting...

Get ready...

Here it comes.......

#1 WORST:
Metropolis Part 1: The Miracle And The Sleeper (Images And Words)

...just kidding.

ALRIGHT, HERE'S MY REAL #1 LEAST FAVORITE DREAM THEATER SONG OF ALL TIME.

READY???

HERE IT IS.

#1 WORST:
Through Her Eyes (Scenes From A Memory)

The main reason I have this ranked above You Not Me in the scale of shittiness is that, while You Not Me is a horrible, horrible song, it wasn't completely the band's fault. Their original idea was decent, but due to label interference and outside influences, it got corrupted and transformed into the abomination that made it onto the album. So they really can't be blamed for making it. This song, however, is a different story. There is no excuse for it. They are completely responsible for it. Through Her Eyes is my least favorite Dream Theater song of all time.

This song sets off my "this is going to suck" alarm in literally the first couple seconds. The last chord of Beyond This Life fades out, the next track begins, a synth pad comes in, and... who the hell is that?! Why is there some confused-sounding lady doing wordless, cringe-worthy vocals in a Dream Theater song? Who's idea was this?! Now, I'm sure this woman has got talent, but I can't stand her section on this song. She adds absolutely nothing, feels completely out of place, and her constant "huuuuh huh huuuuuuuh ooooooh yeeeeah"s just annoy the crap out of me. My vision of hell is being forced to listen to her section repeated for all eternity. But enough about her, how's the rest of the song? Well, James gives a pretty good performance, and Petrucci's solo is nice, but that's literally the only praise I have for this song. It's one of the sappiest, corniest, most boring songs I've ever heard. The main reason this song fails is this; for a slow, emotional ballad such as this, you need to back up the music with a legitimate subject matter in the lyrics, otherwise it's just going to end up sounding completely unconvincing. And since Scenes From A Memory is a concept album, there's pretty much a 0% chance of that happening. What's this song about? Some guy we know basically nothing about goes to the grave of a dead girl that he apparently was in his past life, and cries like a little bitch, lamenting about how tragic it was that a girl as young and "innocent" (this is the same girl that fucked her boyfriend's brother behind his back then ended up getting back with him right afterward anyway) had to die so early. Well, boo-fucking-hoo. I'm sorry Petrucci, I frankly don't give a shit that you're sad that a fictional character is sad that another fictional character is dead. Screw Victoria, she was a hoe anyways. I skip this song every time I listen to Scenes From A Memory, for it is a colossal shit stain on an otherwise fantastic album. If you like this song, and I know there are people who do, good for you. To each his own. For me, Through Her Eyes fills me with rage, and is my least favorite Dream Theater song of all time.

Well that's it, that's all I have. Thanks again for following, hopefully it wasn't too painful.
Take it easy.

Shadow Ninja 2.0

I do not object to Octavarium being in the top spot, though it's not my number 1.

I do object to your placement of Through Her Eyes. It's a lovely song.

BlobVanDam

:lol Oh boy I was getting ready for the shit-storm from Metropolis.....

That. Octavarium probably isn't top 20 for me because of my tastes, but it's such a beautiful song that it is definitely worthy of a top spot! :tup

And Through Her Eyes is probably not even in the ballpark of top 50 for me, but I like it, especially in the context of the album. I hated the song for a long time, so I can understand the placement, but I don't think anything deserves that bottom spot while WDADU still exists.

The Great Gig In The Sky is alright. Unlike the chick from Through Her Eyes, the vocalist actually has some real power and talent, her performance has a lot more variety, and she fits the vibe pretty well. Though she did annoy me too, initially. :P

And I'd actually approve of someone hating Metropolis part 1.

I'm not a fan of Through Her Eyes, but the worst DT EVER?

Rattlehead

Your write-up for Through Her Eyes made me  :lol but it's still nowhere near as bad as You Not Me imo. Still a great list though, I enjoyed following it.  :tup

The Boomr

Jesus, you totally had me going with the metropolis fake out, cause I'm reading on my phone so it really was line by line hahaha!

P.S. We can't be friends with that opinion of Through Her Eyes.

:P

Tom Bombadil

No problem with Octavarium top spot. And I'm also not a huge fan of Through Her Eyes. I like it after the intro but that part just seems like such a Pink Floyd rip off.

hefdaddy42

Through Her Eyes is not enough of a song to warrant that much hate.  Your rage for it is insane, both qualitatively and quantitatively.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

Yes, it is indeed.. Wow! I'm not the biggest fan of Through Her Eyes (hell, I had it at #20 in my ongoing list of least favourite DT songs), but your hatred for the song is almost near terrifying.

I prefer Through Her Eyes to Octavarium. Deal with it. Because I can deal with your opinion.

425

Octavarium absolutely deserves its place. As for Through Her Eyes... I agree with Elite about it, in that it is really not a great song by DT standards, but it doesn't really warrant violent hatred IMO.

Tis BOOLsheet

Your review of Through Her Eyes is hilarious lol. I wish I could post such colorful and funny reviews without getting the axe here  :rollin LOL @ "Victoria is a hoe"

I agree the song is pretty bad, but don't you feel the placement in the concept album makes it a little more tolerable? As a stand alone piece with nothing to flow in and out of, the result probably would have been way more of a disaster. If I listen to SFAM straight through it's not as jarring as if I listen to it by itself, is what I'm trying to say.

On a different note, I don't agree at all with the principle you set forth with respect to You Not Me that there are certain DT songs for which DT "cannot be blamed."
