Although this is only my opinion, I want to add to this by saying that I think Dream Theater is fantastic at writing any type of song, whether it be something they've done before or have never done before; because of that, I don't believe they have ever written a bad song, and more than likely never will, until the day Dream Theater has ended*.

* - Dream Theater will live on with its fans of course! :metal

I'm with Boolsheet, the "radio-friendly" tracks are usually the worst on the album (relative, they are better than most other songs out there). The last time DT didn't write an apparent radio friendly track was 6DOIT. Is it a coincidence that no album since has yet to meet or exceed 6DOIT? I think not. </opinion>

Every DT album since then (apart from BC&SL) has exceeded SDOIT </opinion>

Nothing has exceeded SDOIT. Not before or since. You be trippin'. But radio friendliness has nothing to do with it. That idea is just prog snobbery imo. IaW had a radio hit and a power ballad on it, and how did that turn out?

serrano

There has been always radio friendly tracks on DT records, IAW has a lot of "radio friendly" tunes in it, not only PMU and LAD, you could even count TTT and Surrounded as radio friendly.

SDOIT is certainly million times more creative than every album they released since...

It's a common error among fans that "Another Day" is titled "Live Another Day".

Creativity is nice, but if it's lacking quality, not even creativity can save it. TGP and Disappear are stellar though :heart

Probably, but if I had to remember everyone I disagreed with in the past, I'd have no room for anything else! :lol
Hope I didn't come across too aggressive in that last post. I'd just woken up and I'm apparently even crabbier than usual when I first wake up.

Ben_Jamin

Why is no one talking about how JP mentioned the song that would be a perfect concert ender. With a big crowd chanting ending?

hefdaddy42

Not sure where all this is coming from.  I've never thought that the "radio song" on each album was the worst, except for BMUBMD.  Those songs are normally pretty good.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

This has probably been posted before, but I can´t be bothered to scroll through all the pages. It's an interview with John Petrucci by ultimate-guitar. Look at lol-worthy spelling of 'Illumination Theory' in particular, but all of it is really insightful and nice;

However - they correct it half way through the interview - so who knows ???

This.
The radio songs are suppoused to be less complicated, and yes, less proggy (if I may say).
But it doesn't make them any less good.
Cause, you know? This is the magic of DT. They CAN make amazing (even) radio-songs. I think that basically this is the idea of prog. To be able to mix so many aspects of music, and make the best out of this blend.

Just my opinion.

I would love to hear all of those except for Scarred. I really wouldn't expect Octavarium with being a longer song though, especially as they'll already have the new 20+ minute epic to squeeze in there.

Yes yes :metal

serrano

Not heard the interview yet, but did he say that he would like to play those songs in the upcoming tour or he just wanted to play them "soon"?

Zydar

aprilethereal

He was asked for songs he'd like to play that they haven't played for years.

serrano

It's not the first time JLB says he would like to play 8v again.

cyberdrummer

They were certainly discussing these songs in the context of the next tour in this interview, however.

Yeah, but now it's an evening with. So who knows?  ;D

BlobVanDam

I believe all members of DT have a say in the setlists now, so if JLB would like to play them, they'll most likely be brought up. It's probably likely one or more could show up. I'm all for anything from SDOIT disc 1 showing up. I think there's a bit of neglect there. And I would kill to hear TGP with MM live.

I'll add my hope to that too! The first time they toured here was the SC tour, so I've never been able to see Octavarium live. Of course, that's assuming they're able to play here this tour. Australia didn't make the cut on the ADTOE tour.

Octavarium is my favorite DT song because of the emotional response it elicits in me, so I would probably die of happiness if they actually played it. Though really I'd be happy with any of those songs (possibly Scarred, but I haven't listened to it in a while and I'm having difficulty remembering how it goes).
