#1 is easily Another World, but if I'm allowed to list more, then I'd say these are my other favorites:

I think he said he doesn't really like that solo. God knows why he doesn't...

Whhhhhen? Dammit JP

black_biff_stadler

I heard the same. Apparently some studio guy convinced him to keep it.

?

It was originally a shredfest, but David Prater told him to play it more melodically - maybe JP said: "You cannot touch the way I play!"

Doesn't seem likely. The same solo is present in every version of ACOS I have heard, from the instrumental in 1990 to the ultimate product of 95. It must have been a band intervention :D

Or it's possible he got burnt out on it, considered overhauling it, and was convinced to stay the course.

Well, whatever happened it was for the best. It used to be my favourite solo and favourite DT moment overall. Now of course that's not true anymore, but I'm still very affectionate to it.

The Best of Times

This has everything in it, except for tapping which JP rarely does, all the tricks and staples from simple held notes to harder legato runs to insane arpeggios and sweeps that make any guitar player shudder and noobs like me vomit.

The thing about JP's guitar work is that a lot of it "sounds" simple enough but then you go to try and play it and you realize how difficult it actually is.  I'm not a pro player by any means but I can handle myself but I can only play 100% through a handful of songs cuz there's always some place (or many places) that I just get hung up on or I'm not capable enough.  Even the chords he chooses that sound so beautiful are difficult to finger.

So I listen to a song and say "I think I can do that", and then I try and go "doh", and then I see either JP or some Youtube shredder actually doing it and then I feel faint cuz it's so amazing.  The one song I'm so glad I *can* play all the way through is Spirit Carries On.  It's such a great feeling to play.

Studio: Best of Times

Live: Hollow Years, LaB

This absolutely. All the key elements that I love in John Petrucci's playing are well represented in these 2 songs.

Ruba

Lines in the Sand. My #2 favourite guitar solo overall. I like how it starts out smoothly, but grows little by little, until it has become a huge melodic monster. Huge props for Derek on the background too.

In DT i think The Shattered Fortress solo is very underrrated. Another solo with jawdropping technicality. At the same time it is very melodious, and has a lot of twists and turns. The phrasing is excellent, but it is JP so that is expected ;)

Agreed.  When people talk about his stellar work on this album, this particular solo is rarely mentioned.  It's my personal favorite solo on the album.  TCOT was my favorite at first, but I listened to it too many times  :lol

Also, JP's LTE stuff definitely deserves praise as some of his best lead work IMO.  Kindred Spirits, Freedom of Speech, and Another Dimension come to mind.

If I have to choose a favorite...I'll go with a tie between TSCO and Scarred.

Dellers

The Best Of Times. Nothing else comes close IMO. In general: the less speedy shredding, the better. Shredding is always kinda impressive, but musically it doesn't keep me interested for more than 2-3 seconds.

I am amused at how many people do not understand what "single" means. ;) :lol

My pick: Voices

I've heard it a million times, and I still can't wait for it when I hear the song.

Space Dyed Vest. :D

I disagree, I think the drums over shadow the lead... ;D

I know man... MP and his overly intricate hi-hat work on that song really takes over JP's amazing solo.  :metal

I especially love the part that wasn't written by Kevin Moore.

Not my favorite, but upon paying closer attention to it, it's definitely one of his more underrated ones.

Learning To Live
Lines in The Sand
Scarred
The Glass Prison

Yeah...anyone of those...

GasparXR

Does it count if I splice every single one of JP's solos into one audio file in chronological order and use that as my favourite?

WDADU

"Lines In The Sand", without a doubt.

Honorable Mention: "Surrounded". I don't know what it is about this solo. It's just damn catchy and makes you wanna air-guitar like a damn fool.

Every solo Petrucci does makes me wanna air-guitar like a damn fool.

Octavaripolis

It really changes from day to day. But today it's the solo from Scarred due to its awesome placement in the song.

Full Speed

Goodnight Kiss, most likely. There are a few others that are extremely close but I'd say it's my favorite. Right now anyway :P
