A few days ago I realized JP is by far my favorite guitarist of all time. At least 95% of everything he threw at the world playing-wise during the past few decades, I have obviously very much enjoyed, and I am sure a lot of people on this forum would agree with this assessment I just made. He is just everyone's collective sweetheart for a really good reason. List of traits he possesses:
1) class
2) passion
3) musicality
4) technical skill

List of traits he doesn't possess:
1) mercy

However, assume someone approached you and said "okay so he can play fast, but you're really overblowing his supposed awesomeness". What do you play to show the person JP is really all that?

Cedar redaC

The Spirit Carries On

Breaking All Illusions

Learning to Live

Those are all pretty good.

I said "single" but please do go ahead and list a bunch :lol

wasteland

The Spirit Carries On
Madison Improvised Jam (ending solo)
Lines In The Sans (Bucharest?)
Eve

But many many more would be right to complain for not gaining a mention, as they are all worth it. After all, what else can you expect from such a giant musician? :)

ETA: Single: Madison and go to sleep! xD

For the pure emotion of the moment, the solo in Another World.

The most memorable for me is probably UAGM.

But if I had to pick, the former.

TheGreatPretender

Studio: Under A Glass Moon off the top of my head

Live: Hollow Years Live at Budokan

To put it down to one solo is very difficult.  I think his best 5are;

Ministry of Lost Souls
Home
Lie (outro)
Spirit Carries On
Trail of Tears

The Spirit Carries On.

Runners up:

Another Day
Innocence Faded
A Change of Seasons (Another World)
A Change of Seasons (The Inevitable Summer)

It's so hard to pick just one, he has so many incredible solos - the guy is such a beast. Not only does he have loads of brilliant ones on studio albums, but he always throws some amazing live ones in as well.

If I was forced to pick an absolute favourite, it would probably change all the time, but at the moment I'd have to go for Breaking All Illusions.  :metal
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

Fiery Winds

If I had to pick a solo that didn't feature domination mode to show to a JP skeptic, I'd go with Lines in the Sand, hands down.

It was a single group of songs :lol

I would have to say The Spirit Carries On. Pure melodic, bluesy awesomeness, and the really fast playing near the end really shows how he can play with speed and feel simultaeneously.

The Presence of Frenemies

The Best of Times. The Take The Time live outro (pick a version, any version) would be second.

Budokan Hollow Years of course.
I might go with this. It's incredibly hard to pick one solo. Another ones that come to my mind are Lines in the Sand, Afterlife in Score, Breaking all Illusions, The Best of Times and of course the Spirit Carries On.

Another thing that amazes me about Petrucci is his ability to make short, not-overly-complex solos memorable. A great example of this is the solo that goes after the F# in Learning to Live. It's absolutely mindblowing without going into the shred-mode. Same with the first solo in Afterlife (After the first verse), and Another Day. It's not that they're easy to do, it's just that I can name lots of solos from him that require more skill, but few solos that are actually better. That's something I want to see again in a DT song.

snapple

The Count of Tuscany Floyd section is neat. I don't know of it counts

UAGM. It's fucking iconic

I play them Ytse Jam's solo and tell 'em to eat a dick if it ain't good enough for them. That solo just kills in every way from its Eastern flair to the barrage of fluid legato mayhem during the hundreds of consecutive notes he plays without a pick during that tapping section to the flat-out chaotic feel of it.

Really difficult. Going with Breaking All Illusions.

Oh yeah. I forgot one.

Forsaken. Short, sweet, to the point.

You realize that's like asking a parent to choose their favourite child, if they had 50+ children.

I will have to take the time (nugget) to compile my shortlist. :lol

His part in the unison section of Blind Faith.
My latest concept album "IV: Timber" IS OUT NOW!

The solo in Glasgow Kiss from 4:04 - 5:02. It has feeling, technicality, melody, and overall just awesomeness! On of the best solos ever written IMO.

In DT i think The Shattered Fortress solo is very underrrated. Another solo with jawdropping technicality. At the same time it is very melodious, and has a lot of twists and turns. The phrasing is excellent, but it is JP so that is expected ;)

Another Day. Not the longest or most technical, but the feel and emotion in that solo is amazing. The way it fits the song, not only makes it my favorite JP solo, but also on of my favorite solos of all time.

Zydar

Really tough since he has so many brilliant ones, I guess I'll go with The Best Of Times (that whole song is great IMHO, never got the hate).

?

#1 is easily Another World, but if I'm allowed to list more, then I'd say these are my other favorites:

Learning to Live (the one after F#5)
Another Day
Under a Glass Moon
Voices
Scarred (this solo is so underrated!)
Lines in the Sand
Finally Free (dunno if the lead after the One Last Time reprise counts as a solo, but I :heart it)
Breaking All Illusions
This is the Life

Trial of Tears

This. I love how the solo builds and builds and gets crazier throughout but never loses focus.
