All this talk made me want to relisten to the bootleg of their first coming to Indonesia, last year. Now, THAT was a great crowd  :metal

DarkLord_Lalinc

I love watching video boots of that gig, the two giant screens on the sides of the stage look insanely cool.

Maybe I haven't been active enough on the DT-side for too long, but am I the only one who loves the sound on ADTOE?

No, I do as well.  I mean, I'm not happy that a lot of the drum/percussion is lower in the mix.  But they sacrificed the drum/percussion sound a bit for other things, and I think it's a great overall sound.

DarkLord_Lalinc

I think the vocal approach on the album was quite poppy, in terms of mix. Vocals are super on the front, and there are double trackings everywhere. I don't think that's bad, but it's definitely something different for DT, considering most prog metal mixes are more instrument-oriented per se.

I'm in the same boat as you two.  ADTOE was a fresh sounding album to me, more so coming after BCSL, partially because the drums were mixed lower and you could pick out the Bass lines more easily.  If you listen to the DT albums sequentially the drums progressively get louder and more in front of the mix starting with SFAM.  There is a lot of bass work that was completely overshadowed on BCSL in particular because of the overbearing rhythm of the drums.

Like any other form of art, what sounds good to one person is completely subjective though and varies widely from person to person...considering the high level of analysation of the music in the DT fanbase these arguments over the minutia of sound mixing and sound production aren't surprising.  :D

Scenes was part Bottril, part Shirley. The Shirley parts sound better.

I disagree.  I prefer the Bottril mixes of those songs.  Especially since Bottril didn't forget to include any parts.

Shirley didn't "forget" anything, he chose to mix certain parts out/differently, with the approval of the band.

No, there's an entire keyboard part that was left entirely out of the mix.  When I get a chance, I'll see if I can dig up the link to him talking about it not being intentional.

Cool, I'd like to see that. I know there's also discussion about the mixes on the Metropolis 2000 commentary, iirc? I know there's the keyboard arpeggio in Fatal Tragedy over the choir that was left out, and I remember hearing that Kevin Shirley suggested they take it out, with JR still playing it live. Is that the same keyboard bit you're referring to?

For some reason, I'm drawing a blank on where it is.  I'll have to re-listen to the Bottril mixes.

I just gave the entire thing a re-listen, and the only major part missing from the final mixes is the bit I was thinking of, in Fatal Tragedy leading into the chorus. There's a big synth lead that was taken out. That's the one I recall them discussing on the M2000 commentary.
Other than Overture 1928, the final mix of the album (I assume all of the changes from the "making of" to the final mix were Shirley?) is definitely better. Removing that keyboard lead in FT was the right call, and the original mix of Home is just mud. The other changes are more minor, but I prefer the final mix in every case. Some of those could also be because I'm so used to the final version though!

Marion Crane

I still think Six Degrees is sonically they're best sounding album.  TGP and Blind Faith especially.  I wasn't a fan of how ADOTE sounded

DarkLord_Lalinc

SDOIT and FII are the best DT album mixes for very different reasons.

GasparXR

I do agree with many of the points made. The guitar sounds somewhat muddy, which is a shame because from what I could tell, the tone is amazing, similarly to the guitar sound on BC&SL. I like that the keyboards and bass are more listenable, but the drums should be a little more clear, particularly the cymbals.

Heck no!  I think it sounds MUCH warmer than SC or BC/SL.

I've gotten more picky with production ever sine I got a good pair of quality headphones  ;D

It's a bit annoying actually.

I know exactly what you mean. With bad headphones all albums sound similar, but good headphones make well produced albums shine.
I too think that ADTOE is a bit too muddy. I'm more picky than I was for BCASL and SC because ADTOE is a better album and I would like it to sound perfect.

Warmer isn't always better though. It depends on the kinds of songs. I mean, that warm sound suited SFAM very much. But albums like Awake and SC, because they're more minor and darker in tone, definitely benefit from a colder sound.

Frankly, though, I think all DT albums sound great. One thing I really dislike is just badly recorded and unpolished albums. Like, I can't even listen to Sex Pistols albums. But if an album has like, bass or drums mixed too low, or something, I'm not gonna cry too much about it.

Kotowboy

Yeah I find punk albums like NOFX or something unlistenable because of the non existant production values.

While I get exactly what you're saying, I think I used the wrong terminology in my post.  I think I meant to say "compressed".

Yep, still just a bunch of crap. You can sharpen that all you want, and it's still gonna be a big blurry blue balling board. :lol

Awwwww.  :-\

Anyone else think we're pretty close to a single anyways?

ariich

Dunno, if they're looking at late summer/September sort of time for an album release then it seems rather early at the moment.

OTBOA was released on June 29, and IIRC album title and tracklisting were made public in the first week of June. I'm not saying that it's likely for that to happen again, as the outbound flow of informations seems to have slowed down since then, but who knows :D

No way, as far as I know they are still recording.

EDIT: fuck, too slow

Lucien

As far as I know vocals are the only thing left. Then mixing, mastering, etc.

Jordan is still tracking keys and JP mentioned they still have one more month booked at the studio. So it's going to be a while before we get a new single. It's more feasible that we might get a new LIVE single from the Luna Park DVD soon.

That would be a smart move. Release one or two songs from the Luna Park album while fans wait for both the whole live album and the new studio album.

dparrott

I hope they have some b-sides for the singles this time, they haven't had any since Wither.
