November 30, 2011 - It was announced the song "On The Backs of Angels" had been nominated for a Grammy Award in the "Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance" category. It was Dream Theater's first Grammy nomination.

But, seriously....does anyone care?  I believe that the winning of a Grammy is almost meaningless.  However, in the case of Dream Theater I remember thinking....well, at least maybe this will draw in a new fan or two from the exposure.

Many cool things have happened on November 30 for Dream Theater.

This year, it's the fifth day of the week.

I don't know, as far as nuggets go, I got nothin'.

DebraKadabra

Yeah, so they were nominated but didn't win.  However... we fans have always known that this would happen to Dream Theater eventually. :)

Nov. 30 = 30 / 11

3 x 11 = 33. 3+3 = 6

Fifth day of the week = 5

6+5= 11

They were nominated in 2011.

:eek :eek

Actually, its kind of a big deal.  At least to those of us involved with the entertainment industry awards season.

4 + 2 = 6

The number between 4 and 6 is 5.

2 * 4 = 8.

5/8.

There you have it.

"There" has 5 letters. "You" adds another three, which makes 8. "Have" has 4 letters and "it" has 2. 4 * 2 is 8. 8 - 8 = 0. 0 + 5 = 5. :eek

The way I see it, DT currently have the right amount of publicity, if not a bit too much, they are currently trying not to slide down the slippery slope of becoming mainstream and  top 40, they just have to keep the current fan base and get no more  :rollin    I'm sure they know how dedicated us DT die hards are!  ;D

The moral of this story is, grammy nominations are not good for DT at the moment.

Extremely serious. You could see it with the likes of radio hits on recent albums like, BMUBMD, Wither (not saying It's bad, hell its amazing) and forsaken (also not that bad) but you can just see it, it happens to most bands, take muse for example....

DebraKadabra

I just take a little issue with this statement

and respectfully disagree with it.

DT is not the type of band to "sell out" - hell, they had a really decent shot at doing it on FII and chose not to.  All the Grammy is, IMO, is recognition for something that we fans already know to be true - DT are amazing musicians.

I completely agree, but with a grammy, there will be more fans, with more fans become more people to please, and they might think the only way to please the fans is with a general song, i.e: a chart hit

DebraKadabra

Not necessarily, though - DT has always done things on their own terms/in their own time.  Plus, they've been gaining more fans IMO since they first signed with Roadrunner/the Systematic Chaos days.

I think if fans get to the point where they're "demanding" a Top 40 hit, then they really never understood DT in the first place.

I'm saying it could happen, they just have to fight the slippery slope into mainstream music

And Another Day, and Innocence Faded, and You Not Me, and Hollow Years, and Just Let Me Breathe, and IWBY.
There is no "slippery slope", like writing an accessible song leads to evil things like popularity. The reason DT have gotten as popular as they are is because they know how to strike that balance between complexity and accessibility in their music. The Grammy nomination if anything was validation for 25 years of sticking to their guns and writing music their way, and that will never change. :tup

By no means am I saying that they don't deserve it! Hell they deserve the best music award there is! I just don't think its good for them, especially being compared to the foo fighters!

11 + 30 + 2011 = 2052

2052 = The approximate release date for Dream Theater's 58th studio album!

Only Dream Theater fans would think that them being nominated for a Grammy isn't a good thing.

Oh come on girl, don't you see it's clear they're bored by playing a mixture ranging from extremely confusing and decisively not mainstream music to possible radio hits and that they've decided the past 25 years were a mistake and that they'll completely turn one end of that spectrum. I mean, all the signs are there, they have a new drummer completely incapable of playing the old stuff, a keyboardist who covered Moves Like Jagger on an iPad and a guitarist who is so disinterested in shredding and metal, he is often called out for playing way simpler stuff than in his early days.

(okay, so the Moves Like Jagger part was correct. But that was the coolest thing, like, ever)
