Oh come on girl, don't you see it's clear they're bored by playing a mixture ranging from extremely confusing and decisively not mainstream music to possible radio hits and that they've decided the past 25 years were a mistake and that they'll completely turn one end of that spectrum. I mean, all the signs are there, they have a new drummer completely incapable of playing the old stuff, a keyboardist who covered Moves Like Jagger on an iPad and a guitarist who is so disinterested in shredding and metal, he is often called out for playing way simpler stuff than in his early days.

(okay, so the Moves Like Jagger part was correct. But that was the coolest thing, like, ever)
Don't forget that the guitarist wrote a song that could be mashed up with Never Gonna Give You Up and Gangnam Style! THAT'S SO MAINSTREAM!!!!!!!!!111111!1

To be honest though, in the spectrum of progressive metal, you're not going to find a band more 'mainstream' than Dream Theater. Better yet; there's not a band that even comes close. (and, no, Rush doesn't apply here)

As the girl at Artisan News said, Dream Theater is "the biggest band in the world you have never heard of". Which is just badass!  :metal

Look at all us freaks cluttering your city streets
Still scalping their ticket-less applause
Spun monkeys on the railroad track, take me to the caine field; I walk along pick my spiderbite

About the OP, no. I care more about whatever day OTBOA was released than their Grammy nomination, as it was probably one of the more exciting initial song releases I heard since I got into them (after SFAM, before 6DOIT). It is a milestone regardless for them, and I am glad they got some recognition.

When I cared for a couple of years, the Hard Rock category was always a scroll at the bottom. In other words, no TV time. I think maybe the Grammies were more prestigious at some point, I don't know. I feel they have expanded the categories way too much, or added too many. Especially now, since the music industry has contracted.

The only award and show I care about is the Oscars, and although they have expanded or added many categories, some of the categories still feel somewhat special. And the movie industry as a whole has not nosedived *yet*.

Yeah! And I don't really care what anyone else says, it's pretty amazing that in my DT pictures folder I have both this picture...:

... and this one:

If you had no clue the people on those picture are not the same in both, one could easily assume MP=MM and KM=JR. Seriously, look at them, it's almost scary.

Well, now that we're at it, here's a young Dream Theater in suits for comparison:

JP appears not to have changed a bit, except we know he's switched many different looks throughout the years.

Charlie was there too singing, right? Too bad we have no photographic evidence of his presence!
