What bothers me about SFAM in my opinion is the lyrics.  Images and Words, Six Degrees, and ADTOE do a better job of being epic but not crossing the cheesy line.

Six Degrees the song has horrible lyrics, as does most of ADTOE. Unless you like lyrics that are "I will tell you exactly what is going on word for word with no sense of poetry or art".

SFAM doesn't have the best lyrics, but songs like BTL are quite inventive actually.

My bad, I was referring to mostly the first half of SDOIT, and Far From Heaven/BAI has the best lyrics since LTL!

It's really weird... I used to be obsessed with that record, my first DT album I ever got, but now I just listen to it less and less. I think it's too technical and atonal for me to like it. I especially hate the constant dark, almost sarcastic atmosphere it has throughout the entire album. My least favorite track is beyond this life, the rest are still listenable. It sounds really cool and skillful, but there's never a really good melody and the instrumental section drags on a tad longer than what is acceptable.

Home and overture 1928 are still orgasmic though. It's a good album, definitely benchmark in prog history but just a little overrated.

Now here's an album with a dark atmosphere done right: train of thought. Super underrated, the only track I don't like is Honor Thy Father. First 3 songs strong, last 3 one of their best.

I was going to say I don't like you anymore, but your appreciation for TOT saved you.

Far From Heaven's lyrics aren't bad. BAI's are just meh but are overrated because JM wrote them. Had JP wrote the same lyrics, they probably wouldn't be as loved.

Also, Awake and parts of FII have their best lyrics.

I wouldn't call them "just meh", but they are definitely JMX's worst, and overrated. Woot, I thought no one had the same opinion on this

That's the only thing I agree with.

Scenes hasn't gotten old for me, but it's more of an event to listen to now. Like many people, it's much more enjoyable as a whole than as single songs. I'm finding it hard to fathom your dislike for Beyond This Life, but everybody's got different taste. Some people just don't like bacon.

I don't get why nobody here besides me has BTL as their number 1 DT song. OK OK opinion whatever but still. It's AT LEAST top 10.

Regarding the OP:

I don't find it funny either.

I usually don't really mind what music any person like or dislikes. BUT disliking SFAM in any way should be considered illegal :p

I think Home is overrated, but the rest of the album is top notch. The instrumental section of Beyond This Life is one of the best parts.

Absolutely agree with you.

BTL is not even the greatest song on the album, but it's still quite good.

Its really hard putting DT songs in favorite order because (nearly) every song is amazing and you end up not being able to decide

Maybe you just listened to it too much.

But its funny you mention "the instrumental section drags on a tad longer than what is acceptable" and then you talk about how well done Train of Though is. That was the most instrumental/solo wankfest album they made (I still love it, just facts are facts).

Just leave it alone for a while and come back to it. You will have a new appreciation for it.

In fact, Ive stopped listening to alot of Dream Theater all together because ive burnt myself out on them. Sometimes you just need a change of pace.

This is true. I've done this several times, including right now, when I'm just starting to revisit their whole discography after a few months of not listening to them at all, and it really hits home. Even songs that I don't like as much felt like a cool drink of water.

I still love it, but Fatal Tragedy and Beyond This Life are two songs I thought I would one day come around to, but still have not.  They just never clicked.

That sucked. I'm still waiting for a few songs to come around for me. Not from SFAM, though. That album is 100% amazing.

Recently caught onto Fatal Tragedy, finally understand what all the fuss is about!

The only song I don't listen to from this album is TSCO (flame shield up) because I find it far too cheesy and tryhard.

I agree to an extent... I actually like live versions more. I just hate James' delivery of the line "and you're only given one shot" around the 30 second mark in the studio version. When he says "shot" it just sounds too corny for me, it totally kills the momentum that the song was building up in my opinion. *Flame shield activated*  :lol For the record I do not think it's a bad song by any means, that part has just always bothered me.

Western Ninja

I don't like any version of the song I've heard, it's just way too cheesy...
But yeah, that line is delivered weirdly.

Actually, the only part of the song I like is the throwback to Regression at the end, because I really like Regression, ehehe.

The Spirit Carries On is a masterpiece. Thou shalt not speak badly about it.

:tup.

Fatal Tragedy is my least favourite real song on SFAM. It is pretty good until the instrumental section. I don't really like it.

Lolzeez, look away.

Beyond This Life is my second least favourite. It has many cool ideas, but drags a little.

BTL is actually a top 5 DT song for me but I can totally understand why someone wouldn't be nearly as fond of it. James' vocals are actually a highlight of the song for me, contrary to how I feel about TSCO, I love every bit of James' delivery of the lyrics in BTL...

Coming back to TSCO, it's good to have some criticism for it because it spices things up around here  :lol If everyone was saying the same thing, there'd be no point of discussing anything.

Western Ninja

I never used to like the instrumental section to Fatal Tragedy, but it's grown on me a lot.
And the very ending with the keyboard/guitar unison and the epic bass fills is, well, epic.
