It's really weird... I used to be obsessed with that record, my first DT album I ever got, but now I just listen to it less and less. I think it's too technical and atonal for me to like it. I especially hate the constant dark, almost sarcastic atmosphere it has throughout the entire album. My least favorite track is beyond this life, the rest are still listenable. It sounds really cool and skillful, but there's never a really good melody and the instrumental section drags on a tad longer than what is acceptable.

Home and overture 1928 are still orgasmic though. It's a good album, definitely benchmark in prog history but just a little overrated.

Now here's an album with a dark atmosphere done right: train of thought. Super underrated, the only track I don't like is Honor Thy Father. First 3 songs strong, last 3 one of their best.

Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Is this supposed to be green text?

If not, I think you're looking for the adrenaline mob forums.

I still love SFAM, but not the way I used to, and at the end of the day, it's probably because my listening habits have changed. Getting through 80 minute albums - let alone 80 minute concept albums - is simply too difficult with my awful attention span. :lol

Dublagent66

Oh boy!  I've never seen a thread like this before... :corn

Scorpion

I do think that SFAM is rather overrated, with the storyline being a little contrived and the music being very good, but certainly not really DT's best, but I don't really think that it has a dark and sarcastic mood. :dunno:

Elite

Well, neither is it 'atonal' at any point, though it could be said about the Beyond This Life solo, but I'm not buying that either.

Elite, as a music student, could you define "atonal" for me really quick? Is it just music with a complete lack of a tonal center? If it is, then even the BTL solo isn't atonaly at any point, no matter how weird it is.

The Letter M

I don't like SFAM any less. Does that count? :lol

Really though, I haven't listened to the album in a VERY long time. In fact, I've listened to most of the albums AFTER SFAM more often than I have SFAM.

Yes, basically that. Lack of a tonal center and key. The term stems forth from the emancipation of dissonance in the twentieth century, when composers purposely wrote pieces that refrained from using the Western music theoretical standards.

I find it difficult to listen from start to finish just because I'll get the urge to listen to other DT songs midway. 80 minutes is quite a bit of music to get through in one sitting. I do however still love the album, and I appreciate the songs on their own. Overture 1928 has one of my all time favorite sections of music from any band (3:16 - 3:25) and BTL is a top 20 song as well.

Grinch

I respect your opinion and all, but overrated, c'mon man, if any DT album is overrated then it's Octavarium, great songs but way too fucking overrated.

RuRoRul

I like it, never thought it was the absolute best DT album (or even close to it) though. Don't really get why it's widely considered their best other than the fact it's a concept album and it's place in the band's history. I don't even come close to "not liking it" but I kind of get your problems with it. Although I would say if it's your first DT album and you listened to it loads you might just find part of your opinion just comes from backlash to being burnt out on it while the other albums still are more fresh / interesting.

Oh yeah - you don't like something I do, so  I must apparently say lol fail   :corn or something to that effect.

SeRoX

It's perfectly understandable not to like it but describing it the way you did left me speechless. WOW.  :lol

Pols Voice

I think Home is overrated, but the rest of the album is top notch. The instrumental section of Beyond This Life is one of the best parts.

robwebster

It's exactly as good as the sum of its parts, and the sum of its parts is... basically pretty cool.

Tally both Metropolises under "good, but why the fuss?" for me. Good song, good album, but whoo! Chill pill.

I just listened to SFAM, it says it doesn't like you anymore either.  ;D

Seriously though, that's your opinion and even though the majority don't agree you're still entitled to it.
Truth be told, I don't like SFAM as much as the typical DT fan either.

Adami

There's nothing sarcastic or atonal about SFAM.

And if we're judging how much we like an album by how often we listen to it, then I don't like any DT albums.

There is nothing atonal on the record.  I don't see how it's any more technical than any other DT album.

This is ridiculous.  Not everyone has to like SFAM, but I don't see how anybody could possibly interpret the album as sarcastic.  If anything, it's too earnest.

Fourth Horseman

What bothers me about SFAM in my opinion is the lyrics.  Images and Words, Six Degrees, and ADTOE do a better job of being epic but not crossing the cheesy line.

Six Degrees the song has horrible lyrics, as does most of ADTOE. Unless you like lyrics that are "I will tell you exactly what is going on word for word with no sense of poetry or art".

SFAM doesn't have the best lyrics, but songs like BTL are quite inventive actually.
