DS, KM and CD left the band under different circumstances. There are a ton of details that make MPs departure incomparable to the other guys that left.

All true.

Sherinian and Dominici were fired via a phone call.

Portnoy quit via a phone call.

Moore sent an audio clip from a movie informing them of his departure.

:lol I visualized them getting a VHS tape in the mail and the guys are all huddled around a small 15" TV, watching a clip from gone with the wind. After it ends the guys just sorta look at each other without saying anything, sigh and just slowly walk away with their heads down.

Quote from: DT2003 on August 28, 2012, 07:42:59 AMBut I honestly think to have him play an entire show with DT would be inconsiderate to do to MM and I just don't think DT would ever do that.

???  Maybe I missed it, but who even brought that up as a possibility?  It doesn't even make sense to have a former member sit in for an entire show.  I'm not even sure why you would bring that up.

I didn't mean to imply that anyone said that.  In my post I was saying how I don't think MP would ever join the band on stage to just do a few songs so the only option in his eyes most likely if it was an anniversary show would be if he played the entire show, but the band just would not do that to MM.

The guys handled 2 drummers on stage before. Sometimes even with both of them on one kit. During a jam.

Yes but as much as I love MP, I just don't know that his ego would allow for that when he is not the "main" guy

Maybe it's true about personal and bureaucratic stuff, but as far as musicianship is concerned...he's been giving up the "main" guy role, or to put it simply, sharing the lead role for at least 25 years now. Whether we're talking about another drummer onstage, or other kinds of instruments played onstage, it still counts in the end of the day.

I don't know, to me it's different.  When he was in DT he was always the main guy.  He basically called all the shots and everyone knew it.  To go back and play a few songs with them where he is basically a guest to in his words, "his baby", I just don't think that would fly for him.

If he were invited and refused, that would be awfully hypocritical, considering his criticism of KM for doing the same thing.

True and I could be wrong about him but I just feel it would be real hard for him to be ok with doing that.

Orbert

I don't see the problem, from his point of view, I mean.  He says he'd still love to play with them, if/when the time is right.  Say they're having a big to-do, and invite him to sit in for a few songs, for old times' sake.  He's gonna refuse, because he can't do the whole show?  I can't see that.  He'd do it.  There are still thousands of fans who'd love to see it happen -- heck, I'd like to see it happen, too -- and he always says he does things for the fans.

LCArenas

I'm pretty sure that, in 5 or 10 years, or in their next big anniversary show; they'll consider inviting Mike to play two or three songs, or even a long song; and I don't think MP nor JP, JR or MM will  have problems with it, and just like Orbert said:

I don't know, maybe they could call up Derek and play ACoS. That would be really nice. But only time will tell.

He didn't, it was just a joke considering how he really likes movie samples. He sat them down and told them before Awake was finished, simple.

Couldn't have been a VHS tape, it would have been too big, Kevin would have needed something smaller.  :lol

At least use the green font :lol

I don't think that's gonna be necessary.

Mike Portnoy's unofficial son.

In that case, well, uhm: :mehlin

Speaking of doing anniversary shows, if MP ever gets asked to do a couple of songs with DT and refuses, I'm going to make a thread here citing every interview where he's slagged KM for not doing the same thing. Just to make a statement.

This has been brought up before.  VERY different situation.  You guys have to think about how hard it would be for Mike to join the band as a guest for a couple of songs.  Yeah I know it was his decision to leave and I get that, but he still considers DT his baby so I think joining them as a guest would be more than he could handle.  Maybe I'm wrong and maybe in time he will be able to do it, but the way things are now I just don't know that he would ever be able to do that.

Then stop listening.

Or maybe realize that he might just be trying to play catch-up.

Again I love MP, but IMO nothing James has said has ever come close to some of the things Mike has said about him.

Amen brother

Ben_Jamin

Of course MP will return. Would be neat to finally hear TBOT and TSF, because this song live will slay.

Its all up to MP in the end, if he's buried the past then he'll do it.

Cool Chris

Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

Except it's not.

Exactly.  It was MP's decision to leave.  It's not MP's decision as to whether the band will let him back.

Nah, if it were all up to MP, DT would still be on hiatus and ADTOE would not (yet) exist.

If it were all up to MP, Akerfeldt would be the singer for DT.

If it were all up to MP, the vocalist would change as frequently as his tastes do.
