I actually like the part in Disappear where James sings "So I'm moving on, I'll never forget".

Rattlehead

BMUBMD has a decent chorus that was actually very enjoyable the first few times I listened to the song.

I Walk Beside You is... very short...

The opening riff of Lie is pretty awesome  :hat

The second half of Sacrificed Sons is good  :yarr

The lyrics in Panic Attack are kind of cool and fit the mood, which I dislike.

New Millennium has some cool bass work
You not me has a cool ending
Burning My soul has a cool keyboard solo
Honor Thy Father has a badass intro
Never Enough/Prophets of War have nothing good.

Right. This is a loose definition of "don't care for." I quite like most of these songs, but I was working out my top fifty a while back (not for the thread, just for fun) and kept note of when I eliminated each song. So this is the first wave of eliminations - the bottom tier, the songs that absolutely had no business in my top fifty.

  • Afterlife has quite a nice sort of eighties metal riff going under the chorus.
  • The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun has a really neat intro.
  • Another Day has some properly impressive vocals.
  • Innocence Faded has the best solo on the whole of Awake.
  • Lifting Shadows off a Dream has very nice lyrics.
  • Scarred, like The Ones Who Help to Set the Sun, has a really neat intro.
  • Where Are You Now would completely change the vibe of Falling Into Infinity had it made the album - and for the better, I think.
  • Take Away My Pain has a superb demo version.
  • I can't think of a better way to begin Scenes from a Memory than with Regression. Not a strong song, but a very strong opener.
  • Through My Words is a lovely little bridge between two songs, and the kind of thing Dream Theater don't do enough of. It's just that and Another Hand, isn't it?
  • Through Her Eyes has a great rhyme pattern - which I don't think they've used anywhere else, have they?
  • One Last Time's nice enough throughout, but that jaunty little piano thing at the veeeeery end is always the first thing I remember about the song, and it's such a neat little detail.
  • The entire first half of This Dying Soul is completely brilliant.
  • I'm not often in the mood for it, but when I am, the end of Repentance is one of the most uniquely haunting moments in DT's discography.
  • The one new idea in The Shattered Fortress is a bloody excellent one. Such a catchy little moment, wish they'd done more stuff like it.
  • Far from Heaven is the kind of song that would never have made it to any of the previous three albums, and A Dramatic Turn of Events is much stronger for it.

Like I said - loose definition of "don't care for!"

They're on the bottom rung, definitely. They're ones that would never have even an outside stab of being among my top Dream Theater songs. But it's more a testament to the quality of the other 92 than an indictment of the ones I've listed.  It's not resentment - if Afterlife, say, comes on on shuffle, I'll still sing along. Along with Innocence Faded, definitely! I only stopped at one nice thing because I'd go nuts if I listed everything I liked about all of those songs. I love the "Callow and vain, fixed like a fossil" bit, too. And "Beginnings get complicated."

That said, if you asked me to sing a verse of Lifting Shadows, I'd just sort of sit there mumbling "Bluh bluh bluh alone and silent, na na na na na na answer." Most of Dream Theater's songs have wiggled their way into my head in some way or another. Lifting Shadows, like Scarred, just won't take! Wish it would. Nice bits.

Far From Heaven - nice piano playing
Beneath The Surface - nice guitar playing

Those are the only nice things I can say about those two songs.   :-\

Juular

Prophets Of War has ... uhhh ... well, James singing the chorus with an Indian accent on the Making Of DVD is pretty funny.

Yeah I can't stand Scarred.  I'd take Voices over ANY other track on Awake
I like Scarred and Voices equally, it depends on the. day

The Count of Tuscandy has nice intro. :tup

I like the breakdown to the acoustic guitar in Prophets of War.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on December 11, 2014, 08:19:46 PMHef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

At least Forsaken isn't about teenage vampires...

Well maybe it is, Damn.

Cedar redaC

I'll just do my least favorite track on each of the albums I own

Images and Words: I actually enjoy every track, but if I had to choose, I would say Learning to Live. The outro, however, is probably the best ending to an Dream Theater album. So toogroovin'

Awake: The Mirror, but I think that the spoken word at the beginning of the verse and in the middle section is really cool.

Six Degrees: The Glass Prison, I really think that the beginning arpeggios are awesome. (It's a great song, but it was too long)

A Dramatic Turn of Events: Build Me Up, Break Me Down, the electronic drums and the chorus are awesome!

fadetoblackdude7

Anna Lee has a cool classic rock/Queen-like vibe to it.

Never Enough has some badass keyboard/synth sounds.

The Dark Eternal Night has a catchy chorus.
