I don't like Scenes From A Memory.  At all.  I can't get into it, I don't know why, it just doesn't do anything for me like the other records do.  I get that it's their opus, but I just miss out on it every time I try to listen to it.  Weird right?

Funny, I said this exact thing earlier today before you made this thread.  I agree about SFAM.  Must confess I was let down when it came out, and never could get fully into it.  Plus it was overplayed on the road - think I've seen the entire album played 5 times live.   Something about the production or tone that doesn't work for me in the recordings.

Hmmm... I don't think I really have any opinions I would count as sacrilege.  Some controversial opinions, surely, but nothing too radical, I don't think.  Then again, maybe I'm wrong.  You tell me. 

-I listen to parts of SDOIT more often than I listen to the whole song, and find the whole song, while brilliant, to be a bit of a chore to listen to in one sitting. 

-I really like Prophets of War.

-I also quite like Never Enough, though not as much as I used to. 

-In fact, I'll just go ahead and make the list: Constant Motion, The Dark Eternal Night, Forsaken, Burning My Soul, and Panic Attack are all great songs.

-When it comes to WDADU, I generally prefer the original vocals over those of WDADRU (though I would love to see JLB tackle WDADU in a studio setting). 

-A fairly common opinion, it seems, but I only really like about 50% of Octavarium.  The first two movements don't really do much for me. 

-I think Caught in a Web is the best song on Awake. 

-Blind Faith just barely makes my top 50. 

-I enjoy To Live Forever more than most of DT's studio discography.

Also for me, I walk beside you is a horrible song. Their worst one by miles.

You not me is quite good actually, not amazing, but not as bad as people say it is.

I think Octavarium is way overrated and that When Dream and Day Unite is better than most albums post-FII.

My sacrilege:

Six Degrees is not a song no matter what anyone says (including DT) and it's sloppy and below average for them.  It's too little butter scraped over too much bread.

I sold my ACOS cd a long time ago, and have never looked back.  I remember the hype before it came out, and was sorely disappointed.  After many years, I gave it another try, streaming it.  nope.  still doesn't do much for me.  The best thing on that cd if I remember correctly, is the Elton John cover.

Ok, let me just get my will in order first, then I'll get to it-

-ACOS is wildly overrated, and not that amazing. It is good, but everything on IaW is better imo (including LTL). Aside from being an old song and being the first "mega epic", I don't know why it's so highly regarded. Octavarium is the far superior epic imo.

-Speaking of which, I find LTL overrated too. I still think it's a great song overall and maybe 8/10, but the verse/chorus melodies are too weak for it to be one of the better ones imo. The melodies suffer for the sake of the lyrics. I consider everything else on IaW better, though keep in mind that everything else on IaW is at least a 9/10 song for me.

-Awake is one of DT's lesser albums, thanks to the awful run of Lie > LSOAD > Scarred > SDV dragging it down, and I consider Scarred one of DT's most poorly written songs by a fair margin.

-Octavarium, SC and BCASL all have some far better songs than ADTOE, even though I consider ADTOE the more consistent as an album. So I guess that counts as sacrilege, because I rank all 3 of those albums higher than ADTOE, and rank ADTOE at the bottom with Awake and WDADU.

And if we're including all controversial opinions, and not just sacrilege of things considered great-

-WDADU is by far DT's worst album, and isn't good enough to be considered a real album. I consider it a demo (actually that's not controversial at all, but everyone else is using this as an opportunity to trash stuff that's not highly regarded anyway, so what the hell)

-ANTR is awesome as is.

-TDEN is amazing (top 20 or top 10), and SC is very underrated.

I've already given Awake more than enough chances to judge it very fairly. Just because I dislike it, doesn't mean I'm missing something. I just don't think it's that good. End of story.

A good amount of people love the sound, mastering, production quality, etc of DT's earlier work (IAW and Awake). I enjoy the songs, but the sound is too late 80's/early 90's metal for my taste. I started listening to DT in 2003, so I think it's definitely a timing thing considering I love the production of Scenes to ToT.

-A Nightmare to Remember is a nonstop thrill ride and I was sincerely hoping MP's poor attempt at growling would at least open the door for a cameo by a real growler on future releases (Mikael Åkerfeldt please!!!!!)

As awesome as that would be (I don't know if this has already been said), Mikael has been less and less interested in death growls lately so I'm not sure how likely it would be to have him do that on a DT release. But if he did, and DT were able to incorporate the growls *properly* and really nail it I'd be the happiest girl EVER

While I personally disagree, it's not really sacrilege, as there are plenty people that find the song boring (Blob coming to mind first), at least not a sacrilege like, I dunno, thinking You Not Me is Top 10 material or something.
