Learning to Live - That intro. Everything before 1:12 is horribly bland, which is a shame because the rest of the song is so damn good.

Beyond This Life - The instrumental is a tad too long. It feels slightly forced

The Root of All Evil - There are too many verses. Everything else (the intro, choruses, solo section, outro) are fine, but the verses should have been shorter and more consistent.

ITPOE - Everything after Slaughter of the Damned feels quite small compared to the awesomeness of that section. Nothing wrong with The Reckoning or Salvation per se, but you have this incredible
moment succeeded by 2 merely decent sections. Same problem with ACOS, where Another World completely overshadows everything succeeding it.

ANTR - You can cut at least 2-3 minutes out of the last third of the song. Phenomenal intro, however.

The Shattered Fortress - Unnecessary, overlong keyboard solo

Lost Not Forgotten - Solo section is quite "meh".

I think the problem with Beyond This Life is that on the album, it follows Fatal Tragedy. And after THAT instrumental section, it's just... It couldn't top it. So it feels like a step down.

Why compare them though? One is a metal shredfest and the other is more of a jam. Both are awesome, and I absolutely love BTL's.

The story wouldn't make much sense if the album were out of order. Would that really be better than the way it is? :P

Have The Dance of Eternity at the beginning of the album to scare newcomers away.

Hey, I love every little sound that comes out of SFAM. But listening to the album consecutively, after a ride like Fatal Tragedy, Beyond This Life just feels more tame. It's like taking a crazy ass roller coaster ride, followed by a more subtle, less intense roller coaster ride. It's still fun, it just doesn't take you to the same thrill level as the one before and there wasn't a song between them to allow you to come down and rest... It's just... That's why I think BTL might come off as underwhelming.

The Dance of Eternity was the first Dream Theater song I ever heard. It pretty much single handedly made me their fan. So, not gonna work.

NEWCOMERS.

You are an oldcomer.

How's that? I was a newcomer when I heard it... So I don't know what you're talking about. Or what the difference is.

No, because you had listened to DT in a past life.

Ohhh, I see. So all that I learned that time has carried beyond that life!

That joke was pretty desperate.

How is it possible that it's page 6 and no one has said:

the tickle section of Lost Not Forgotten.  The intro is awesome up to that point.  Maybe not top 10, maybe top 20.

Also, the outtro or whatever you want to call it of This Dying Soul.  That song sits at #12 in my ranking right now, but take that last minute off and it moves up at least 2 notches.

Notice a trend?...

anyway, moving on, I think Pull Me Under is a good song, but my copy the song cuts off prematurely.  I wonder if they can re-release it and fix that problem

Crap.  All this time I thought the line was 'desperate shooting that echoes still.'
