Lines in the Sand is a fantastic song.

This is Dream Theater, you could say the same thing about 75% of their songs.

FlyingBIZKIT

I'll go ahead and do it. Why wait when everyone knows?

1. Visions

I think this 22 minute epic is definitely one of the best songs I have ever heard.

Wait, this isn't the Haken thread?

1. Insurgentes

Nope..

1. Trains?

Fuck

1. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

Not a surprising pick to most of you I'm sure, but I don't see it rank as high on many top 50 lists. This is a song where I know it will always be my favorite DT song. It's already written in stone. It's not going to be surpassed. Everytime I think there is a song that can pass it, like Lines in the Sand, it just fails to do so. No, it's not my favorite song because of it's length. In the Presence of Enemies is about 25 minutes and that came nowhere near my top 50. This is a well written song that I think gets more hate than it should.

Overture - Technically, this is my favorite instrumental. In my last writeup, I said Hell's Kitchen was. However,  I usually listen to SDOIT as one song, so I don't separate everything. It's a beautiful opener to the majestic 2nd disc. It does a great job of previewing themes you will later hear in the song. It's truly beautiful, as are the other 7 parts.

About to Crash - Really sweet song. Jordan's piano intro is superb, and the intro sets a positive tone. At least that's what I take from it. The chorus is godly, though the 2nd verse is what really gets me. JP's guitar playing there always makes me smile, and Rudess is playing some beautiful pieces. I LOVE the whole line, "She was raised in a small midwestern town.." and so on. That part has always stuck with me, and it's become one of my favorite DT moments. The vocal melodies in this song are excellent. The instrumental section is very nice as well, and JP's solo is among his greatest.

War Inside My Head - The shortest section of Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. It works best when listening to it as a whole rather than just starting this song with no proper intro or ending. It's the most badass part. James has this Dave Mustaine kinda vibe to him, and it kicks ass. MP's backing vocals add more badassery.

The Test That Stumped Them All - My least favorite part of SDOIT, but it is still a stellar track. It's heavy, balls to the.......floor. The drumming is phenomenal, and so is the guitar playing. The chorus is one of their strangest, but it works. This song is mainly about soloing as I see it, and it is definitely one of their funnest.

Goodnight Kiss - As if the song wasn't already amazing after the 1st four parts, it just gets even better. Goodnight Kiss is probably their most beautiful song. It's nice to have a song like this after The Test, because it gives the song some breather, and isn't just forced wankery. This song is haunting, and Labrie makes it even more emotional. JR has his amazing piano moments in this song, however, it contains Petrucci's best solo ever, IMO. The amount of chills that I have had listening to it is outrageous. It's simple, beautiful, and emotional. Everything about this part is spectacular, and the ending starts picking up again.

Solitary Shell - Fucking beautiful. Every single thing about it. JP's guitar playing, JR's piano melodies, and of course, James's amazing vocals. Solitary Shell has the best chorus of any DT song, and I don't see that changing. This is the song that always cheers me up, no matter what I'm going through. It gives me such a positive outlook. After the beautiful verses and choruses, there's a beautiful instrumental section. It's not crazy, but more, relaxed. I love the ending, because I always get this "Shit's about to go down" feeling.

About to Crash (Reprise) - JP's strong guitar intro makes this part one of my favorites. It's a much more fast paced About to Crash, and you all know about the point of view. James has some of his best vocal moments in this one, and it's just a fun tune. I prefer this over About to Crash, though both are excellent. "Who'll be standing by?" that part gives me chills. The instrumental section is fast, and spontaneous. It's beautiful, heavy, crazy, and so on. I love it

Losing Time/Grand Finale - This is it. My favorite DT moment, and my favorite moment in music, EVER. I don't like using the word, "epic", because it sounds silly.. but this is the definition of the word, "epic" as I see it. Losing Time is beautiful, and it's my favorite of the 6 degrees. I love this part to death, but it only gets better. The Grand Finale is the best part of it all, and I think this is where James is at his best. He is loud, and his vocals are some of the most powerful I've heard. This song has gotten me teared up on several occasions, because it's the most beautiful thing I've heard in my life. Every member shines here, as the way it should be. The lyrics are amazing, and James executes them perfectly. I'll be a Senior in high school next year, and I think I want my quote to be, "A journey to find, the answers inside, our illusive mind." Jesus. I also love the 2 minute fading outro, as it just lets you breathe (no pun) after such an incredible moment.

I do not relate to the lyrics whatsoever, but I feel I can connect with this song anyway. It's my favorite song, and I never see that changing. I could listen to this song over and over, and never grow tired of it. I fucking love it.

Well that wraps up my shitty ass Top 50. I know many of you think I'm crazy for including a full album into my top 10, but that reflects my actual feelings.  I hope it was enjoyable, while I know many disagreed with my picks, and that's what I like. It'd be boring as hell if we all agreed on everything I suppose.

KevShmev

Six Degrees... wouldn't make my top 30, but it is still a highly enjoyable suite of tunes. :tup :tup

TheGreatPretender

Yeah, I'm not gonna read all that. Maybe you should just turn your write up into a 40 minute song.

Six Degrees is cool, its positives definitely outweigh its negatives, but the only reason I would see for giving it a #1 spot is if someone said, "That's the only song you're allowed to listen to from now on until the rest of your life". That way, at least you get a lot to listen to.

As soon as I saw what was #1 on the list, I thought I heard a faint 'OH YEAH' coming from Australia ;D

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is a fantastic song.   :heart

...  Okay, but honestly, it is.   :tup  Doesn't make my top ten, personally, but it is definitely a brilliant piece of music.  A worthy pick for #1 for sure (and probably the least surprising #1 on anyone's list of anything ever).

Overall, Bizkit, I stick to what I said to you in a PM a few days ago: your list is bonkers.  But it was a very fun read, so kudos.   :tup

SomeoneLikeHim

SDOIT is my number one as well and it's always nice seeing it get some praise. :tup I agreed with everything you said in the writeup.

FlyingBIZKIT

Everyone, thanks for taking the time to read my BOTTOM 50 DT SONGS.

My real top 50 consists of almost the whole Systematic Chaos album in my top 10.

Do you wanna just meet up somewhere and listen to SDOIT?

I mean I know you don't like showing your face on the forum, so you can wear a a paper bag over your head if you need to.

Hey guys,
Unfortunately I have a very important exam tomorrow, so I'll start my list tomorrow once it's over. However, I'll keep it at a fast pace, with 5 songs per update (at least for the first 40 songs), and at least one update a day.

Sorry for that!

If he doesn't, I do. I absolutely have no idea how would I judge SDOIT as one piece of awesomeness - I'm positive that I'll split it in movements when the time for my list comes along.

I'll come. Also, where are we meeting? Blob is Australian, so we can't just bring him up to America. He might lose too much blood in his head after being upside-down for all those years.

I'm pretty sure the blood flow to my head stopped about a decade ago anyway, so I say bring it! SDOIT listening and friendly spooning party!

TheGreatPretender

I'd rather listen to one of their better albums like SFAM or SC.  ;D

FlyingBIZKIT

As much as I'd to TGP, no thanks.

I'll be with Seoafs and Blob and Mora listening to SDOIT.

BlobVanDam

SFAM is my #2, so I'll allow that one. While I'm definitely one of the bigger fans of SC here, that opinion still warrants an "OH NO HE DIN'T!" from me. :lol

FlyingBIZKIT

SFAM is my 2nd favorite, but SDOIT is my favorite DT album by far.

Falling into Infinity.

That's where we're different I'm sure.

That's probably my 4th, just behind IaW. If you put IaW 4th though, we got ourselves one hell of a listening party.

FlyingBIZKIT

It's my 6th, but only because I think 5 albums are better. It's an outstanding album!

Scorpion

Hmmmm... SDOIT is an awesome song, but I consider it to be a little too patchy, for lack of a better word. There are some parts that I truly enjoy, whereas others, while by no means bad, fall flat in comparison with these.

Still, I liked your list, and your update speeds.  :tup

Fourth Horseman

SDOIT. Great choice, very emotional song.

Can you put me on the top 50 list?

There are no universes where SC is better than SDOIT.

Agreed. Nor the rest of their albums
