Wow. #2 behind Metallica.

They had to mention that DT tweeted it to their fans to vote..."which is why they ranked so high"...

Yeah I read that and I was like: shut the...!!!

Ħ

That's so stupid.  First, there's nothing wrong with tweeting a poll to your fanbase.  Second, I'm sure DT wasn't the only one that did it.

Rolling Stone looks like it really doesn't like DT.  Their song recommendation was "The Big Medley".  Really?

Acideus

Nice. The comment section made me  though.

Wow....I'm really quite shocked by this.  And extremely happy for them.

Mladen

kirksnosehair

jeez, did they really have to use "Turbo Lover" for the Judas Priest page in that poll result?

Knguro

What really surprises me is that I don't recall any other thread around here in order to support this, so that's just a sign about how the fanbase has grown a lot!

Dream Theater at # 2?! I think not!

you are right. DT should not be number 2. They should always be number 1. Greatest band to ever exist.

DebraKadabra

I'm excite for DT and all, but how relevant has RS really been (especially since about... 1978)?

I'm also beyond shocked that DT placed above Iron Maiden. :o
Look at all us freaks cluttering your city streets
Still scalping their ticket-less applause
Spun monkeys on the railroad track, take me to the caine field; I walk along pick my spiderbite
Basically Kyoko Kirigiri

DarkLord_Lalinc

Holy crap, that's a big achievement. I mean yeah, it was all fan-induced, but it's great that Rolling Stone gives the recognition.

livehard

Rolling Stone can S my D...  But im glad to see DT only 1 position behind that it truly deserves.

TheOutlawXanadu

Rolling Stone is not a horrible magazine, but like Pitchfork, their ultimate goal is to be cool, which is why they will never accept Dream Theater. It took them decades to accept Rush and, shocker, they only did it once Rush became kind of cool.

Even though they say DT didn't deserve it, basically.

RS is a pile of shit, anyway...

If you didn't bother reading the poll's first page and skipped right to the DT one, you might want to check it out, as it's a bit more kind to DT:

"The results of these readers' polls are sometimes thrown off when the fanbase of a certain group mobilizes and stuffs the ballot box. We have little doubt that Dream Theater would have ranked high on this list no matter what, but the group tweeted the voting link to all their fans. Bear that in mind when you see how high they ranked. If the Bay City Rollers fans had done that, we simply would have yanked all the votes, but Dream Theater are an amazing metal band and we are going with the results as they stand."

Which doesn't change the fact, of course, that RS sucks big time.

I don't buy it. They just throw a single positive comment in so they could get away with coming up with how DT got so high in the polls.

Knguro

This is one of the must stupid things that a "professional" journalist can say that I ever see in my life.

QuoteRS:As we noted earlier, Dream Theater tweeted this poll to their fans, which helps explain why they ranked so high. ...

This is like saying: please don't take this on us, is not our fault! Still I'm happy for DT!

I'd like to give the guy who did the write-ups the benefit of the doubt. He's a writer for what is potentially the world's most mainstream music magazine, and he knows his readers will be pissed off if the results of the poll aren't mainstream, so he explains it in the spirit of full disclosure to calm down the mainstream music junkies.

Either way, they wrote something very nice about DT which simply wasn't necessary to write, and for that I give them credit.

ddtonfire

They didn't have anything nice to say about Metallica either.

Progmetty

That's good to see cause I met a douchebag music critic yesterday that irritated me.
They surely deserve it. RS are bitches for writing the comment about the twat factor.
And that picture they have up there of James and Kirk is the first time in 10 years I see a Metallica pre-90's picture that I have never seen before and not fan-shot.

DreamerTV

They're basically saying: we're not that good in promoting our things on the net as DT are.
Good for you RS.
And good for us, DT.

Some of these ignorant pricks on the comment section on the comment section make me  :mehlin and  have you not seen their metal side? It's a hell of a lot more enjoyable then thrash metal, all of its generic to me IMHO. I like the fact that RS included bands like DT in this poll.

PS: when I saw Led Zeppellin I was like:  ???

Actually, to be fair, I glanced through the Iron Maiden and Metallica twitter feeds and looks like neither of them did. Obviously Pantera and Led Zeppelin didn't tweet anything either. So I dunno, they kinda have a point. And some (not all) DT fans often complain when polls are dominated by a band based on rabid fan support rather than "merit". For instance that Music Radar best guitar solo poll where Alter Bridge beat everyone.

Anyway, I'm not saying DT doesn't deserve the position it got, and they're my favourite band so I'm pretty happy. But looks like we finally have enough of a fan base to be on the other side of the poll popularity contest so maybe we should just be happy about it and not worry about the complaining and snide remarks. Because in the long run, these polls mean absolutely nothing and will be forgotten in 2 days. :)

#2 place! Thats awesome!  :tup Congrats DT, you surely deserved it!  :metal

I know you're saying this because the bands aren't together anymore, but just an FYI there is a facebook page for Pantera despite them no longer being around. I don't recall if the person running it posted anything about this poll, though. Nor do I really care; I just see posts from that account on occasion since I clicked that I like Pantera.

Maiden didn't do anything atleast mediocre since seventh son.

Assuming you meant to say that Maiden's done nothing of note since Seventh Son, all the albums since Brave New World would like to speak with you.

Brave New World, Dance of Death, A Matter of Life and Death and the Final Frontier are all great albums. I think a lot of people agree with me on that! Oh well, your opinion is your opinion!

Mladen

The X Factor would kinda like to speak with him as well. But you have to let the album speak and not ignore it...

Common misconception #1: bands that pioneer genres are the best in the genre.

Why won't people learn that?
