Common misconception #1: bands that pioneer genres are the best in the genre.

Why won't people learn that?

I think this is probably true most of the time, but would you say DT pioneered the Progressive Metal genre? I personally think they did, in which case they're an exception to the rule.

DarkLord_Lalinc

Yup. Seriously, lots of prog metal bands I've checked out suck, so DT takes the cake.

Yeah maybe...I think Queensryche was arguably more prog metal than DT back then.  I think O:M is more metal than DT's first two albums.

But I was talking more about how bands like Led Zeppelin, Metallica, and Black Sabbath get more praise then I think they deserve.  They were obviously important stepping stones, but overall I think their sounds have been brought to fuller potential by other bands.

I totally agree but then there's the next question of what people understand as "top" 10 bands or the "best" bands etc. I think at that point it's up to the interpretation of the poll taker to some extent. Then again, I'm sure there are plenty of people that think Black Sabbath is the best metal band. I was one of those people once, but that was before I discovered DT and some other bands lol.

Zook

How exactly did DT cheat by tweeting the poll? Was this a secret poll or something?

WindMaster

Naw, it wasn't cheating. RS was just pointing that out like the douches they are. None of the other bands did. DT's just smart. And has a huge fan base.

WildeSilas

Yeah, fuck RS. They've been a bunch of prog hating douce wagons from day one. They're so butthurt over a prog band placing in their lazy excuse for a poll, that they're going to turn around and recommend to potential new fans what is probably the worst thing the band has ever released. Dick move from dick "journalists" and not out of character for this dick magazine. They can also kiss my ass for having a ridiculous Kings of Leon hardon. Get over it already.

Flacracker

Its a reader poll and the bands cant even tell people about the poll?

TL

Basically, RS is saying "We had this poll, but a lot of people voted for a band we don't like, so it doesn't really count".

Seriously, RS is terrible; it has been for a long, long time. They just can't help themselves when it comes to being passive aggressive toward any band they don't like. "If you're new to the band, check out this cover. We're mentioning it so that we can waste half of this writeup naming other bands. Oh, also, their drummer left, but their guitarist didn't. That will tell newcomers a lot, right?".

I've seen far worse from them, but still. Getting bitchy when fans of a band vote in an online poll? Come the fuck on.

They've done things exactly like this to Rush and Yes for 30 years.

DebraKadabra

Oh yeah, RS has always had their fingers on the pulse of good music.

^ That may or may not be considered sarcasm in some countries. :xbones
Look at all us freaks cluttering your city streets
Still scalping their ticket-less applause
Spun monkeys on the railroad track, take me to the caine field; I walk along pick my spiderbite

It took them [Rolling Stone] decades to accept Rush and, shocker, they only did it once Rush became kind of cool.
Rush became "cool"? I must have missed that. :(

Pull Me Under from Live at Budokan.  Wow.  You can tell they don't know DT, so they just looked up their only hit single on youtube.  They probably didn't even watch it to see that it's a pretty terrible representation of James LaBrie.

I echo a lot of what has been said in the thread.

Ravenheart

ITT: People have more common sense than Rolling Stone...not surprising.

Congrats just the same, DT.

slycordinator

Yeah. Fuck Rolling Stone for stating unequivocally that "Dream Theater are an amazing metal band." :\

Rolling Stone is not a horrible magazine, but like Pitchfork, their ultimate goal is to be cool, which is why they will never accept Dream Theater. It took them decades to accept Rush and, shocker, they only did it once Rush became kind of cool.

This.  Rather than try to write a short blurb about why people like Dream Theater or what their music sounds like, they decided to talk about the Big Medley (of bands RS DOES like), the MP debacle, and that they tweeted the link which is why they scored so high.  That's really more insulting to the band and its fans than just ignoring them as they have been for the past 20 years. :P

this this this ^

don't go near that website/magazine I'm afraid.

CodyWanKenobi

Well all know that all poll are just popularity contests. No one votes based on whether they think DT is one of the best metal bands. People just vote for their favorite band.

Plus I lost ALL respect for Rolling Stone after they put the Jonas Brothers on the cover. hahaha.
My latest concept album "IV: Timber" IS OUT NOW!

They should have mentioned songs like March of the Tyrant. :neverusethis:

Rush did become cool, sort of in that underground sense. See: I Love You, Man.
