After that though it'd be extremely hard for me to rank the next few.

Where is A Change of Seasons EP?
I would imagine that the OP would say (rightly) that ACOS is an EP, not a full album.

Also, this thread was started in 2011, so I'm not sure it's worth it to ask such questions.  Or, indeed, to resurrect it at all.

1. Train of Thought and I&W
2. Metropolis pt. 2
3. Octavarium

Not at all surprised to see that the Top 3 are SFAM, I&W, and SDOIT.    Those are my top 3 as well.

Awake would be my #4 or #5 album with DOT so I'm not surprised to see Awake on this list at #4 either.

I am a little surprised to see that so few people have FII in their top 3.  I know its often considered the worst of the classic era but it's still in the classic era.

I have ADTOE as my least favorite DT album(not upon release, put upon repeat listens) and that is #5.   Not surprised the fanbase has it there, but it's the one that I am most out of place with.

This might be a rather unpopular opinion

Octavarium
Metropolis Pt.2: Scenes From A Memory
Black Clouds & Silver Linings

Great picks!

Revenge319

1. Black Clouds and Silver Linings
2. Octavarium
3. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

I think Six Degrees is Dream Theater's best album, but it's not quite my favorite for three simple reasons:
Octavarium, The Best of Times, and The Count of Tuscany.

And in case anyone's wondering, I do really enjoy the rest of Octavarium; even the couple of otherwise infamous songs like The Answer Lies Within.

I'm glad someone loves The Best Of Times as much as I do. It's a stunning piece of music in my opinion.

Agreed. And it most definitely goes beyond the incredible guitar solo at the end; I love every part of the song. Out of every Dream Theater song, it ranks at about #5 for me. If you're wondering, #4-#1 are Illumination Theory, The Count of Tuscany, Octavarium, and A Change of Seasons.

The guitar solo is one of Petrucci's finest moments, the song's kind of dull though to me apart from the intro.

Hard to argue with that.  It only goes to show how consistently great DT have been though that I bet nearly every album they've done will be someone's favourite. They've never done a really bad album in 30 years and that's pretty incredible.

Agreed, it's an amazingly strong catalogue. On any given day my top 3 could be an entirely different set of albums. I voted Octavarium, Awake and Scenes in the poll but ask me next week and it could just as easily be Train of Thought, Six Degrees and DT12.
