So here is the deal, I'm taking a trip to the record store tomorrow, and they have these two albums, but I can only buy one. So, which disc should I take?

Do you prefer straight up heavy metal? If so, get Train of Thought.

Do you prefer diverse Progressive Rock/Metal? If so, get Six Degrees.

I love both. Seems that Six Degrees is the one to get. New question, how does it stack up with the holy trinity of albums? (Images and Words, Awake, Metropolis)

Jamesman42

It's usually just outside of those 3 albums' pedestal.

Personally, I think Six Degrees is just as good as, if not better than, those albums.

Mr. Beale

Both are great, but Six Degrees has more variety.

Better than I&W and Awake imo.

It really depends on whether you would prefer an aggressive and hard-hitting DT (Train of Thought) or a more diverse/varied album with SDOIT.

Train of the Thought really will leave your ears ringing by the time its over. Its an album you crank up and don't look back. Train of the Thought was the first DT album that I really got into, and just listened too over and over again. Its reception was somewhat mixed, but I think its great from beginning to end.

Now on the other hand, what's cool with Six Degrees is its kind of the best of both worlds since you have two very different discs.

Disk one has some hard hitting songs with Glass prison and Misunderstood as well as the somber Great Debate with its brooding mystique. Blind faith is also a very cool song with some interesting piano parts by Jordan.

Disk two is an excellent and well paced epic. The 42 minute SDOIT has really grown on me over the years, but may seem a bit different upon first listen.

I personally enjoy Train of Thought a little bit more then SDOIT, but either choice is a winner.

Six... Degrees... Of... Inner... TURBULENCE!!!!

This is an essential album for the hardcore DT fan and casual DT fan alike. It has the heaviness that ToT offers, but is more diverse and more progressive! ToT is great, but SDoIT is a must!

SDOIT.... no no TOT..... no Six degrees.... no no TOT... .. six..... TOT........ :omg:
error...

Dr. DTVT

the best sond on 6DoIT (6DoIT) is better than the best song on ToT (ItNoG)

Glass Prison, Blind Faith, and Dissappear are all better than whatever song you thing is 2nd best on ToT.

Misunderstood and The Great Debate would both probably be the 3rd or 4th best song on ToT.

6DoIT is the clear answer.

Not that it's going to matter but I'd personally recommend Train Of Thought. I also think the characterisation of it as their simple metal album is a little off, I doubt people would really listen to anything but As I Am and say it's standard simple metal and not progressive. And it benefits because every song on it is really good in my opinion, but I guess if you're put off by heaviness you won't think that (not that it's really heavy all the way through or anything). But yeah, Six Degrees is also awesome, all the songs are good, it's longer, and it is more diverse, so I think you'll be safe if you go with the majority on this one.

SDoIT for sure. ToT is very weak IMO.

I like SDoIT, but have to go with ToT.  ToT is top 3 for me... SDOIT is maybe 5 or 6

Well, I'm a metalhead, so my answer should be pretty predictable.  But for what it's worth, my favorite of the two is Train of Thought.

Basically, Six Degrees has a lot of variety, whereas Train of Thought sticks more to one style, but is consistently good at that style.

6 Degrees easily. Or just preview the tracks on ITunes

Mosh

I did, but that's not enough to make a decision.

Evo

six degrees = amazing
train of thought = poo

(imo of course)

wammabe

Train of Thought is a good album, but the originality and experimentation of Six Degrees alone is extremely good, Jordan's keyboard sounds are way better, and its a double album.

For me, the gap in quality between these two albums isn't that big. I'd go with Six Degrees, but I'm not completely head over heels in love with it like some people. The Glass Prison and Blind Faith are great.

Sums it up pretty well for me. I don't dislike 6 degrees, but it only has one real standout track for me - TGP. I can see why others rate it so highly though.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

If your favourite DT Member is JLB or JR, get SDOIT. If you adore JLB, run away from TOT and forget you ever heard of such a thing.  ;)
If your favourite (ex-)member is MP, get TOT, although he does quite well on SDOIT too, but TOT has some of his best work IMO.

BlobVanDam

I love both, but SDOIT no contest. ToT is cool, but it only shows one very specific side of DT. IMO SDOIT shows everything that ToT does and then a lot more.

tri.ad

SDOIT. The first disc is absolutely amazing and contains some of the best stuff they've ever created.
