Does this mean Petrucci's gonna leave Dream Theater?

Oh god I hope so, that way they can finally back to their core sound.

No, they've already started touring.  ;D

Yeah, Beneath the Surface's lyrics will be just this: "I totally wanted to leave a while ago, but Mike stole my thunder.  Bye."  And then it will be a sample of someone drowning for five minutes.

Also, I just realized that this album has both a BITS and a BTS.

Also also, I love Rob.

I wonder if that's the actual pic that inspired Kevin Moore to write the song.  Didn't he say he fell in love with the girl in the picture?  I think we all are experiencing that right now.

No my friend...that's well beyond camel toe country and wandering into the  "Moose knuckle" arena.

Slain

"A dramatic tour of events... you probably could have seen that one coming."

Perpetual Change

Exciting news! I agree with the person that said "Far From Heaven" and "Breaking All Illusions" sound like they might have a dynamic similar to "Wait For Sleep" and "Learning to Live."

But I gotta say, I lol'd pretty hard at John's comment on the Persians" "[sic] No-one really knows much about it, but there was a big army that was all over the world."

dongringo

I now think that this will be my favorite album lyrically and musically since 6DOIT.

The Silent Cody

Cool stuff, I really like how it is going, We are getting known more and more when the album release is coming closer :) So, we're having another WFS + LTL connection, another The Dance Of Eternity :) and next DT concert in january/february...

Why is everyone relating Beneath The Surface with Space Dye Vest? The only similarities I've heard of are that they are both made by a single member of the band and that they are both ballads. In fact, I've seen reviews of it as "hopeful" and more positive. Plus, I remember hearing that they "Dream-Theaterized" it; Spaced Dye Vast was exactly as Kevin Moore wrote it.

I don't know if anyone is saying they are going to sound alike, exactly.  I just see people pointing out similarities between SDV and what we know about Beneath the Surface - both were written by a single member, both are closers, both are songs which were not originally intended to be on the album.

Luckily they sound nothing alike. One is a depressing piano thingy. One is an upbeat acousticy thingy. The similarities disappear once you go beneath the surface.

This could very well be their best album...

I was looking at the lengths of the songs though. It seems like this album has the perfect mix of long and short songs.

Great interview. I love it when Petrucci realizes what he is saying comes off as different

"The Persians were a very powerful civilization long ago..... not very rock n roll, more historical.
than on Systematic Chaos when explaining Forsaken
"Than he realizes that he's getting his..blood..sucked... Nice light topic....

He is one of my favorite band members to be interviewed.

It was also nice to not have a track-by-track that includes: This song sounds like The Glass Prison or this song sounds like Pull Me Under and
Learning to live combined. Can you handle that!?

I'm excited that 'Bridges In The Sky' and 'Outcry' are both 7 string songs.

"Actually, I wrote the lyrics without the music."

Is this the first time a Dream Theater song has ever been written lyrics-first?

Didn't JM write lyrics for Trial of Tears before the music? I remember MP making a statement somewhere that they had to re-work the lyrics to fit the music and it sounds like JM may have written them before hand.

This was definitely true of Lifting Shadows.

I swear I read it in some kind of summary written in a website before BCSL was released, but I can't find it anywhere.

All I remember was Mike proudly saying that he wrote The Shattered Fortress on his BlackBerry

Awesome article. Some pretty cool details.

Lost Not Forgotten has a unison that makes peope tickle  :eek

The title of This is the Life came from a spanish bumper sticker

BITS sounds like the piece where Mangini talked about playing an extremely difficult part that he mentioned in a previous interview

In regards to outcry, I'm wondering if JP is talking about the awesome riff they played with Thomas Lang; If so, AWESOME.

Breaking All Illusions

"It's the Part 2 of the previous song. We specifically wanted to write a more epic piece, and when we do that, we know that we're not bound to any sort of structure as far as verses and choruses.

"Arrangement-wise, it's very non-traditional, so you hear a lot of breakdowns. There's a great John Myung moment where he does an ostinatto part in the first verse. He's going in something of a circle, and it has a real hypnotic effect, drawing everybody in.

"The song is extremely proggy, with a lot of keyboard breaks. As a guitarist, I had a great time on the section that's very La Villa Strangiato [by Rush]. It starts out kind of bluesy, then it's kind of jazzy, and it builds and builds. I got a chance to use so many aspects of guitar playing: phrasing and melodic elements, blues, jazz, shred. It was very satisfying to record. Alex Lifeson was definitely in my mind as I was playing."

They said they never used any riffs that were in the audition videos. He said the Outry riff came up when writing FOR the auditions, but that doesn't mean it appeared in the video, or they even used it at all.

It's in the Beneath The Surface section of the Musicradar article.
