Thanks for pointing this out!  I hope Mangini posts more of these.

This is my favorite DT song to watch Portnoy play on his Hudson DVD...and Genie tackles it like a boss. This guy is practically perfect in every way.  ;D

Seriously, the Genie pulls out all the stops! So I guess the going nick-name is "Genie" now? I guess I need to change/update my DT-icon in my signature to include a Genie...

I agree, I hope MM posts more of these, they're a great look into his drumming of DT songs, and I really enjoyed his drumming here, the ambidextrous/symmetrical kit really changes things up but he can still pull off every part flawlessly! I see what he means now about having difficulty getting the snares on before the full-on verse begins, but it looks like he's got it down pat!

Awesome! Wish it didn't cut off.

Agreed both, post and avatar.

Haha thanks!

You're welcome man I just hate that shit, but meehh what can we do, well back on topic is just amazing how MM feels, looks and does everything right and besides that, it is noticible how he enjoys what he's doing I can't slighty imagine what he will be capable to do with the new songs!

dongringo

Totally. The new album is going to be quite a drum ride. I also love how his drum kit is set up for being ambidextrous. He may be a one of a kind. I certainly have never seen anyone else play like him.

Adami

I gotta tell, since MM joined DT I have really been inspired by his ambidextrous playing. I've been practicing playing my bands songs switching between left handed and right handed.....which is REALLY hard for a right handed guy. I even designed a drumset (which I will build one day once I get the 30,000 dollars or so it will cost) that is inspired by (and much cooler than) MMs kit.

Mike Mangini is a beast and likeable too.  He was the perfect voice and I'm so thrilled he's part of the DT world.

$30K drum kit
$1k on drum sticks
$500k on studio
Not having MM behind that kit, priceless.

Haha ;D

Adami

You give me 30,000 dollars for the kit, and I'll handle being behind it.

Here's a clip of the Great Debate where it is fun for me to combine some things. I'm combining MP's parts from both 6Degrees and his Hudson Video, as well as using my right foot 18"kick with the gong drum to flam while keeping the ride cymbal going. Also, turning on & off the snare took me a bit of time to get used to. I couldn't reach the snare lever in Rome and really muffed it, but nobody busted my chops :):) thanks. Hope you like this interpretation of a truly fantastic MP drum part.

So we have a Wizard, Genie, Pirate, God and Myung. It's beginning to seem like the cast to a really epic Disney film! :metal

That comp, which starts at 0.42 HOW HE CHANGES HIS HAND POSITIONS AND KEEP THE RHYTHM  :omg:  :metal

:heart :heart that guy!!

I saw him with Extreme back in 97 on the Waiting For the Punchline tour and couldn't hardly pay attention to the rest of the band because I was transfixed watching this "hired gun" play whatever he wanted on both sides of the kit. It's not just that he was a good drummer, it's that the way his kit was set up and his approach challenged everything I knew about drumming at that point. After seeing the way MP has been acting publicly (not to get off topic), I can only imagine how he was acting with the other members behind the scenes lately. It's so awesome to watch MM play and read his FB posts about how they're all hanging out after shows, discussing the songs and performance. It just feels like DT is a real band again, with 5 guys who mutually respect and enjoy each other - it hasn't felt like that since before 6DOIT to me. MM's joy behind the kit is just palpable and contagious. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy or a better band.

PixelDream

That was a cool video. And MM keeps treating MP with a lot of respect, which kinda makes me happy. I still love MP as well, been watching the SCORE DVD again; what a feast seeing JP playing the TSCO solo with his buddy MP behind the kit. A dramatic turn of events indeed, but luckily MM is the right fit for the band. Saw them live, and I can only agree that they're sounding great and are having more fun on stage.

Stonestef

Thanks OP for posting my video!  ;D The video that MM had originally posted on FB was out of sync with the audio so I fixed it so that we could enjoy watching him! Please, check out my other 3 videos if you want.Just some covers with my band.

ha I use my feet to turn the snare on and off.

Surely you would position the snare so the lever is facing you ( i.e between the knees ) - then it would not be too much hassle to flick it on.

Especially if the snare stand is heavy enough and won't wobble - then you could probably do it in one motion without much effort ?  ???

I think Portnoy too had a problem with it, it's a "how fast can you do it" issue if I remember correctly.

Genie is fitting. Bear wished all the drum beats for the album and his wish was granted. All Genie had to do was say 'yes master' and wiggle his nose.

This, incidentally, reached #4 in the top ten list of weirdest slash-fics to ever haunt their readers' gag-reflexes.
