The new name debate aside... so far this seems to be the most anticapated song off the new album. I don't think anyone is expecting it to be the best song, but I think everyone is very interested to hear what this song is going to sound like given the very unique song title.

For those unaware of what a Shaman is, they are spiritual leaders amongst tribal groups, who suposedly interact with the spiritual world, often using drugs extracted from special herbs.

Given the song title, if the music does match the title, I expect a song that sounds mystical, dream-like, trippy, tribal, perhaps elements of soundscape with emphasis on nature, given that a Shaman is heavily assosiated with nature. I could imagine some foriegn instruments, perhaps revisiting the sitar, maybe some bongo drums. The intro to Trial of Tears could be an influence.

What do you guys think? Thoughts, speculation, hopes, expectations, etc...

Jaffa

Everything you said makes sense to me.

I think I said this once before, but for whatever reason, the song title brings to my mind Voodoo, by Godsmack.  Whenever I think about the song, I can't help but expect it to be sorta like that song, only more DT-ish, obviously.

Bridges In the Sky = Hmm, that's a pretty cool song title.

The Shaman's Trance = Woah, awesome, I wonder what this is going to sound like.

Jaffa

I personally would rather have Bridges in the Sky as an album title than a song title.  But maybe that's just because I don't like ADTOE.

The Shaman's Trance has a more unique feel to it, though.

Am I the only one that thinks that Bridges in the Sky sounds a bit stupid? It really doesn't roll off my tongue easily. Then again, it seems to fit in better with the other song names in the album. Shaman's Trance sounds a lot more interesting. Hopefully the song is as interesting as its name. I think that the name sounds very Rudess-ish.

I imagine something really jungle-ish, like When they Come for Me by Linkin Park.

Is anyone with me on this when i think of Bridges in the Sky, I end up hearing "The Wheel in the sky keeps on turning" by journey :P

The Silent Cody

I was just wondering - what does The Shaman's Trance have in common with Bridges In The Sky?

Youre right; Abstract in the Sky sounds much better :tup

Scooterfruit

Sorry to sound stupid, but where did "Bridges in the Sky" come from?

I'm fine with both names, but I have to say that The Shaman's Trance gave me the feeling that it's an instrumental; this feeling isn't as present when it comes to Bridges In The Sky. Also, TST has a ring of originality to it, while BITS sounds a bit like a song title any band could come up with imo.

Bridges in the sky < shamans trance. Bridges in the sky is like a song title an amateur prog-metal band would come up with lol.

Well they both allude to the status of one being "high", one is physically the other is psychedelically

And I just realized how the acronym "BITS" sounds.

olliemedsy

the album should definitely have been called that. it matches the artwork as well

alirocker08

I think that because of how easily the title was changed, it must be an instrumental.

Happy face ^^

Titlewise...

The Shaman's Trance is more evocative, inasmuch as the words have far more specific connotations, so it's better for speculation, but Bridges in the Sky is way less corny.

We know it was called the Shaman's Trance once-upon-a-time and may still be called it, but I'd rather it stayed as Bridges. Any speculation based on the original title would still be valid anyway, seeing as they haven't changed the song. Probably.

I like The Shaman's Trance better. That being said, the two titles are somehow compatible. Think about it: The Shaman achieve a state of trance to be able to reach the divinity/ies, thus acting as a metaphorical bridge between the earth and the sky (where gods are usually "placed").

I like Bridges in the Sky better than Shaman's Trance.

I just think of this song though...

Elaitch

The Shaman's Trance sounds like something with a lot of Rudess craziness on it... I instantly think of his 3D Wizard when I see that song title. Bridges in the Sky sounds a little more mature and in sync with the rest of the song titles on the album. But it doesn't really matter in the end, since what matters the most is the song itself. If I like the song, the name doesn't matter.

DramaticEvents

Totally agree with Elaitch. The name doesn't matter, the only important thing is the song itself(although I like The Shaman's Trance better).

Do people seriously believe that after releasing an official track listing that Dream theater would go ahead and rename one of the songs then only tell play.com about it??

It's a mistake, plain and simple. Move on.

So what?  I've seen people spend entire threads discussing misheard lyrics; this doesn't mean those people ACTUALLY think those misheard lyrics are correct.  It's just fun to discuss, and same here.

Go ahead, talk about it all you want. Just seems a little pointless to me.

That or they did change it, and Play.com got it from the back of the disc rather than the now-outdated press release like everyone else? Not entirely likely, and not saying it's happened, but no more far-fetched than the idea that Play.com just decided to invent a title for no apparent reason.
