Hey.

Been running several times a week this year and music is an important distraction for me. Also, a lot of music I love doesn't suit listening to whilst running, for whatever reason. Used to go with fairly straight-ahead stuff like Against Me!, AC/DC, Strapping Young Lad but this week have gone with the Octavarium title track followed by OTBOA. 8VM particularly is awesome.  :)

Anyone else run to DT? If so, favourite tracks?

Zydar

I don't run but I'd think it would be difficult to run to anything that hasn't got a steady 4/4 beat. If I would run to the ever changing time signatures in progressive music it would be really difficult for me :P

Yeah, this...I cannot drive even with DT cd in player...  :xbones

I don't run a lot, but I've found that Overture 1928 matches my walking pace perfectly.   :metal

I've tried running to DT and other prog music, but this just doesn't work for me. Constantly changing time signatures and changes between calm and intensive parts can be really annoying when running. I guess DT is for listening, not encouraging to run like hell.

I usually listen to 4/4 rock, with a lot of energy and shouting/screaming vocals and fast riffs. Stuff like AC/DC or Iron Maiden, and such and such. My favorite is maybe Airbourne's last album, No Guts No Glory. The lyrics almost literally tells you to run like you'll die if you don't, and the riffs are usually fast and powerful. When I'm running tests, like 3km or anything, i usually use the tracks "It ain't over till it's over", "No way but the hard way", and "Raise the flag". I don't even notice I'm dead tired.

JasonScandopolous

Half the tracks on ToT are useful for running or lifting; nothing else in their entire catologue, except maybe PMU and TGP, are good.

This. Overture 1928 is the PERFECT walking music. If you guys haven't tried it out, next time you have to walk somewhere at the start of your day, even if its a short walk to school or work from the parking lot just walk to that song in the morning.

The Shattered Fortress is a very common song for me to run to. I love using it as the last song on my exercise and try matching my pace to the different sections in the song.

1. I run fairly fast to the intro and Glass Prison reprise.
2. Jordan's solo starts and it's time to move it up a notch!
3. Now slow down for a while and enjoy James singing.
4. Ok, the riff from Root of All Evil starts, let's go!
5. Shit Petrucci goes wild so it's time to go 100%!
6. "I AM RESPONSIBLE!!!!", 666%!!!!!
7. Now I am probably very tired and can finally slow down to the Glass Prison intro.

I promise, no need for a trainer, this song is all you need!

The Glass Prison, ITPOE PT1, Never Enough and Panic Attack are also very good tracks for training!

TheSilentHam

I always listen to DT while on the elliptical machine, but I don't try to keep rhythm with it at all.  It just keeps my mind engaged...workout flies by.

KevShmev

The first half of Octavarium is pretty mellow.  I actually used Audacity to make a workout-friendly version of Octavarium (which is from the start of the keyboard solo to the end, so the last half of the song).  I guess if you are gonna ease into your run, by doing some fast walking for a bit before working up to the jog or run, the beginning of OV can work well for that, but if I am mid-run and OV comes on, it can be a killjoy.

The DT songs I put on my iPod for workouts the most are:

Scarred
The Shattered Fortress
About to Crash (reprise)/Losing Time/Grand Finale (which I have as one track in iTunes)
Light Fuse and Get Away
Metropolis

Jaffa

I don't run much, myself, but I do several exercise routines other than running.  One of these routines is about 24 minutes long.  This routine requires starting slowly to ease into it, increasing the pace as you go along, getting faster and faster, and then slowing back down in the last few minutes to cool down.

Needless to say, Octavarium is pretty much the perfect song for this routine.

Sounds awesome, I'll try this next time! And I forgot, Panic Attack is a killer running song.

I have Systematic Chaos on my iPod Shuffle, along with Opeth's Deliverance, Metallica's Death Magnetic, Muse's Origin of Symmetry.  I don't get too hung up on the 4/4 beat - doesn't bother me a bit.

CrimsonSunrise

Not while running....but!  When I'm lifting...especially doing many sets of 12 oz wrist curls.... hells yeah!!! :metal :metal :metal

pain of occupation

the 4/4 hangup seems kinda funny. how uncoordinated are we?

that being said, running in time to the music can result in a moment of transcendence.

TheGreatPretender

Anything with a fast pace is good to run to, IMO, so most of the stuff from Train Of Thought is great.

But moving in step with the rhythm, I find that Overture 1928 is perfect for walking.

Ħ

Running to metal is great, running to prog is not.  For running or working out, that's generally when I pull out the Sonata Arctica or James LaBrie side projects.

Heretic

I run all the time, and just an hour ago, actually, I was running to Octavarium. Long songs take up a good bit of time and makes the running easier, at least for me. The time signatures are no bother.

ZBomber

I don't understand how you guts get caught up on time signatures when running.  :lol I can understand the slower tempo stuff though.

farsight

I found myself singing

RUN INSIDE THIS OCTAVARI-UM
RUN INSIDE THIS OCTAVARI-UUUUUUUM

I find Caught in a Web and Take the Time to be a good walking songs, something about those funky beats

FlyingBIZKIT

Well what I do is:

I'm always running forward and falling back, and then, I start spinning round and round. After I get really dizzy, I begin to look outward while reaching in. It feels so weird, that I scream without a sound. I lean over to puke and then start crawling up, stumbling all around. After that, I realize, I'm losing my place only find I've come full circle.

So, it's not worth it

Well played

Mosh

Lately, I've been living my life to Octavarium.

DoctorAction

Interesting mix of things there.

I've decided that I'm not bothered about the 4/4 so much as the mood of the music. Proggy twistiness is fine as it gives my brain something to think about other than than my body's discomfort. The Dev's Deconstruction has been a recent running listen, for example, and that one's all over the shop! I think the music just can't be "defeated" in tone, if that means anything.

Cheers!

The Presence of Frenemies

I usually run to stuff that has beats at the exact speed I run at, which usually means power ballads and such, since my running speed is like 70-72 bpm (in 4/4; 6/8 stuff works great too if I want to kick up the tempo). With DT, that means The Best of Times and Learning To Live. There's nothing like running along to the crazy LtL time sigs!

m0hawk

I have a feeling that if I listened to Octavarium while running, I would probably run around.... IN FULL CIRCLES

weezul

I love running to The Glass Prison.. it always gives me a second wind!!

But aren't you supposed to be running from the Glass Prison?

:neverusethis:

metropofreak

My favourite DT running songs are The Glass Prison, These Walls, The Shattered Fortress and especially Stream of Consciousness. Also The Mirror too.

MasterShakezula

Is say New Millennium, Just Let Me Breathe, Lie, A Fortune in Lies, Afterlife, Constant Mofion, and ITPOEP1 make for some swell running.

RaiseTheKnife

Its the truly epic working title for Under a Glass Moon.

Dellers

I think A Nightmare To Remember is a great track for running. Same thing with AROP. Also, 6:00, Take The Time and Learning To Live are great "runners" IMO. And yeah, I've done Octavarium. It's pretty awesome for that purpose too.

Chino

I run 5.5 miles a day and don't think I have ever listened to an signle DT song in the process lol. When I am running, I need short, fast, up beat songs. I listen to a lot of hip hop, one hitters from the 90s, and Steel Panther.
