I run 5.5 miles a day and don't think I have ever listened to an signle DT song in the process lol. When I am running, I need short, fast, up beat songs. I listen to a lot of hip hop, one hitters from the 90s, and Steel Panther.

Wowee!  That's quite the long-distance-run.  I may walk that far, as part of my daily walk through my hilly neighborhood, but running that?  Intense.

As for running music, I do prefer other artists.  Maiden has some great runnin, tunes, as does Helloween, or any Euro-speed-metal group.

I can't listen to music at all when I run or train. I have to be completely focused on my breathing. I don't see how any of you could run to 8vm. There's no beat to speak of to run to at least for the the first few minutes. You should all listen to the title track driving into a sunrise. Epic win.

Back when I started running I used to do this one 3 mile course by my house. I would often listen to Octavarium (the song) to gauge how well I was doing. If I finished before the song ended, it meant I was doing under 8 minute pace, and that was yay!

Several people have commented that it seems odd to use something with an irregular beat for exercise.  I understand that, but just to clarify it for you, not everyone relies on music to help them keep their pace.  Some of us have our paces worked out; we know how fast to run, or how long it takes us to do push-ups, or whatever.  We know our exercise rates.  A change in musical tempo doesn't make us change our pace.  So for some of us, the odd time signatures are irrelevant.

For me, what makes some Dream Theater songs great exercise music is the fact that I can get really into them, so that my mind doesn't feel bored while my body's working.
