Similar melodies reused in Dream Theater songs?

Two pairs that stand out to me:

VOCAL MELODY: "Oh come, let us adore him!" (A Change of Seasons) and "We spiral towards disaster" (On the Backs of Angels)
GUITAR MELODY: Right after the chorus (Misunderstood) and the main melody at the beginning and throughout (A Rite of Passage)

Know any others? Excluding the AA songs, WfS/LTL and whatnot, of course.

I demand credits for this one  :lol

Yep, I think it was you who said that it should be followed by "Abuse and then ignore him." Wasn't sure if I dreamed that or saw it in passing, but now I can't get that out of my head. xD

You have them.  Thanks to you, 'abuse and then ignore them' feels like a natural extension of OtBoA for me.  :P

KEYBOARDS (also a little guitar similarity too): Intro (Erotomania) and at the end of The Crimson Sunrise, exactly at 2:48 (A Change of Seasons)

Aniland

I have no idea how I never noticed that, considering that I, well, know that part of ACoS so well.  :omg:

I know very well this similarity. It was a cause of major confusion at the beginning of my career as a DT fan, actually  :)

Blazinarps

There is a section of Finally Free that basically copies the chorus of One Last Time.  Actually, a lot of sections in Scenes From a Memory copy each other.

They simply do it too well. Really clever.

Thanks Aniland and wasteland. Now A Change of Seasons and On the Backs of Angels are...

For the sake of "Just in case", concept albums get to do that.

MetropolisxPt1

3:52 in About To Crash is eerily similar to SOC keyboard melody during Jp's solo.

When I first realised this I thought it might be deliberate, but didn't find any mention of it anywhere so I guessed it wasn't.

LCArenas

On The Backs of Angels Chorus:
"Tears fall from the shameless
Shelter me, guide me to the edge of the water
Selfless are the righteous
Burden me, lead me like a lamb to the slaughter"
/
The Root of All Evil:
"Take all of me
The desires that keep burning deep inside
Cast them all away
And help to give me strength to face another day"

They sound quite similar... I don't know why but they remind me of the other.

Aniland

I don't hear much similar in that, unfortunately.

7StringedBeast

Guitar solo for about to crash and constant motion are the same for quite a few phrases.

The Beautiful Agony section of A Nightmare To Remember has two sections that sound like the "Fabricate our demons" part of Lines In The Sand and the main riff of Hell's Kitchen, respectively.

Oh wow...

ricky

why would it matter if similar melodies are reused?

Well it's a bit uncreative and a tad disappointing to hear reused melodies or riffs. Not too big of a deal though.

EDIT: Unless you're Grave Digger and use the 2 Minutes To Midnight riff to open two of your songs.

Because it's fun to find them?

reused melodies or riffs.

first off, the proper term would be motif.

as a simple example, scenes from a memory is FILLED with reused motifs (I.E. metropolis motifs expanded upon in TDOE, etc.) but the album is seldom lauded as a rehash of reused material.

I don't think the thread is about whether it matters or not. It's just to see if there are any you noticed. We don't need to pretend Aniland or any of the other posters are criticizing DT in any way. sheesh...

Thanks professor. Although I wasn't speaking of concept albums in particular. I'm fine with reused MOTIFS for those. I was talking about (just an example) riffs from Awake showing up on Black Clouds in a blatant, "hey didn't that riff sound familiar to them?" manner.

ricky

i never said you were speaking of concept albums in particular.

i was simply pointing out the fact that DT have a tendency to slip in motifs from previous works into new ones.

Isn't the only instance of that Scenes From a Memory though... And The 12 Step Suite of course?

SPEAKING of Hell's Kitchen...
The first four notes of that song on guitar, and the chorus riff of "Voices".

DJay32

Standing on the backs of angels,

Feeling my heart pull west! I saw the future dressed as a stranger...

GasparXR

The first few notes of the chorus in Scarred, and 2:03 in Lines in the Sand.

KevShmev

I always thought the main riff/melody in A Rite of Passage was a slightly different take on the In the Name of God one.

Well, Kevin Moore wrote the keyboard lines to both Erotomania and the original A Change of Seasons. Maybe he thought that ACOS would never be officially released, but he liked the keyboard line, so he moved it do Erotomania...not sure, just a guess. It fits in both songs really well.
