Why so high? Not criticising your taste, but I always thought of it as being a Metallica song that was never good enough to go on an album...

Still, it sounds much better than most Metallica songs... so you could then say that Dream Theater is actually better at doing Metallica than Metallica ;)

Anywhoozle, I'll go with Constant Motion. I think it's a top 10 DT song for me; in fact one of the most clear prog metal songs I know; odd time signatures [intro], unusual harmonies [instrumental section most notably, from 3:40 through guitar solo] and technical proficiency [for example MPs drumming during the instrumental section...] as well as a distinct metal sound...

It's very underrated, in my opinion :P

The part after the second chorus in I Walk Beside You, where the lyrics begin at "Oh, where everything is wrong[...]" is...well I don't want to say it, but...beautiful. :loser: I don't normally like the poppy-uplifting sort of thing, but DT do it so well in this example that I can't help but love it, especially this post-2nd-chorus breakdown. Fucking brilliant execution. I'll gladly take Mike Portnoy backing vocals when he didn't suck at it, aswell.

I'm a big fan of Constant Motion also as it happens, always thought it got more crap than it deserved. But on this particular poll I had to go with I Walk Beside You.

I like IWBY and AROP(vote for IWBY) but CM is bad song IMO :-\

Constant Motion

Great song. Too bad it doesn't work live...

Why do you say that?

Constant Motion. I love that instrumental section.

Time signature changes are always great too.

I'll go with A Rite of Passage being a bit better than I Walk Beside You.  Though neither are what I would call great songs.

Constant Motion for me. None of those songs rank particularly highly for me, but I seem to enjoy listening to CM more than the other 2. JPs solo  :metal

AROP probably just beats IWBY into second.
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

Lowdz

IWBU. It's a good poppier song. Even my other half likes it. Until she realises it's DT.

Sixtease

AROP has the cool guitar riffs under the second verse, IWBY has amazing JLB vocals, CM has a great guitar solo... I picked AROP but it's not a strong preference. Sometimes, I Walk Beside You is the exactly right thing I need to hear. But not very often. :-) And the lyrics are sick IMO (literally, not as in cool).

Haha, my girlfriend isn't into DT and she likes it a lot too. I enjoy IWBY, probably the best of the 3. If I had to order them:

1. IWBY
2. CM
3. AROP

Mr. Beale

I love IWBY, great vocals. AROP and CM are solid.

wolfking

IWBY with AROP a close second.

Constant Motion > I Walk Beside You > A Rite of Passage

Nick

I prefer them in the reverse order of their release.

Constant Motion

Great song. Too bad it doesn't work live...

Why do you say that?
Because of all videos I've seen, and that includes Chaos in motion, I still haven't found the one performance where James and Mike nailed the vocals. Vocals make that song for me, so when they can't pull it off live, it just doesn't work.

N4Player

I like all 3 but AROP is easily the best for me.

I Walk Beside You hands down!

ZirconBlue

I actually like all three of these songs quite a bit, but ended up voting ARoP.

Same here. CM's riff's & instrumental section slay AROP's.

dethklok09

A rite of passage easily. The riffs, the vocals, the lyrics, the solos all delivered to my liking.

scoutmasterdave

Constant Motion is without a doubt my least favorite DT tune.  The other two are fairly meh, but CM just grinds on me for some reason.

I dunno, I think its a great song musically but lyrically it just falls short in my opinion
