Originally I had ACOS and Octavarium as choices, but I realized it wouldn't be any fun, because everyone would vote for those two songs, so I figured I'd only include the lesser favorable DT Epics.

Anyway, I voted for 6DOIT. I've noticed it doesn't get as much respect as ACOS and Octavarium. I really think that along with those two, 6 Degrees was the pinnacle of DT's song writting quality. Listening to this song is really like exploring the abnormilties of the human mind, in a completely beautiful and journey-like way. It really is the most diverse song DT has ever written, and for that, I adore it.

Runner ups:
2 - In The Presence of Enemies
3 - The Count of Tuscany
4 - A Mind Beside Itself

*sigh*

six degrees will dominate this poll.

I hope not, this thread won't be any fun if that's the case lol. I'm some what new to the forum, so I wasn't aware if Six Degrees was insanely popular or not compared to the others listed.

Elaitch

I will go for In The Presence of Enemies in this case.

Also, I would swap Six Degrees for ACOS... Six Degrees is definitely not an "other" epic, as far as I'm concerned... then again, that's probably just me.

You shouldn't have put 6DOIT in here.

But he should swap it for ACOS?  So, by extension, ACOS is an 'other' epic?  Mmmhmm...

Well, my vote would go to AMBI, but I don't really consider it an 'epic', myself.  Maybe I'm mistaken in that.  But for the time being, my vote goes to The Count.

krands85

In the Presence of Enemies for me, The Count of Tuscany just behind.

If Octavarium and ACOS were included it would probably go:
1. 8VM
2. ITPOE
3. ACOS
4. TCOT
Whoaaaahh, ohhh, ohhhhh. Whoaaaahh, ohhhhh, ohhhhhh. Waaah, ahhh, haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaowwwwww

Well... if In The Presence of Enemies can be considered "an other epic", then ACOS can be considered one too... at least compared to Six Degrees and Octavarium, of whom the latter were one of the two initially excluded.

lithium112

The Count of Tuscany! This song is easily in my top 3 with ACOS and Octavarium.

Fair enough.  No offense intended, it's just that, to me personally, ACOS is the Dream Theater epic.  To each their own.  :)

None taken :D However I will probably never understand why ACOS out of every epic seems to be the one that most people on here prefer the most... but as you said, to each their own.

Sorry, but the others aren't even in the same class as SDOIT.  ;D

RuRoRul

Went with Count Of Tuscany, mainly because the intro and the end are among my favourite bits of DT ever. In The Presence Of Enemies and Six Degrees are also great, although I find it hard to treat Six Degrees like one song. A Mind Beside Itself I don't consider one song either, and Voices is an overrated epic. I do like it and I love The Silent Man, but not really as part of an "epic".

None of those are epics.

This. But I still voted for A Mind Beside Itself.

Algo Fonix

A Mind Beside Itself, for me. Absolutely love it.

Jamesman42

TCOT as it is a top 5 DT song for me.
\o\ lol /o/

m0hawk

1. Octavarium
2. Six Degrees
3. The Count of Tuscany
4. In the Presence of Enemies
5. A Change of Seasons
6. A Mind Beside Itself

Global Laziness

From my Dream Theater rankings list:

1   A Change of Seasons
16   The Count of Tuscany
20   Octavarium
24   Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
25   In the Presence of Enemies

I don't consider A Mind Beside Itself to be one track so I couldn't really rank it.

^ It ends up on the bottom. But I don't think that's necessarily reflective of where it should be.

i am curious as to why you believe TCOT is better than Six as a whole.

how come?

Global Laziness

I find The Count of Tuscany to be more musically-consistent overall. Six Degrees also suffers a bit from feeling bloated.

i politely disagree. while tcot is an awesome track, it doesn't come close to what six degrees achieved. from a compositional point of view, six is superior. dynamically, six is better. i just feel that there truly is no comparison. what is tcot's answer to solitary shell? what is tcot's answer to wimh? as good as tcot is, six has so much more to offer. prove to me why tcot beats six degrees, pointing out specific reasons why, and i'll admit im wrong.

I don't need you to admit you're wrong. We're two different people talking about two different songs, so we're entitled to two different opinions. Each song has its strengths and weaknesses and while I absolutely respect what you like about Six Degrees, I happen to prefer The Count of Tuscany.

i realize that, and i respect your opinion. but if you're going to say tcot is better than six degrees, at least give some reasons why, other than "Six Degrees also suffers a bit from feeling bloated."

The Count of Tuscany is more cohesive.

Six Degrees' Overture is too long.

The last several minutes of The Count of Tuscany is better than any part of Six Degrees.

The least best parts of The Count of Tuscany are better than the least best parts of Six Degrees.

Six Degrees has that annoyingly long fadeout.

Both songs are still really good, but, while The Count of Tuscany works well as a single song, Six Degrees comes off like a bunch of short songs stitched together, rather than a single piece of music.

But A Mind Beside Itself is the best of this bunch anyway (and is also better than both Octavarium and A Change of Seasons).

psychdoc

As a psychiatrist, I have to give it to "Six Degrees...."

However, I also love the  "A Mind Beside Itself" trio, and I also love the music of "The Count Of Tuscany." Also, I love "A Change Of Seasons", "In The Presence Of Enemies", and "Octavarium."

ubit

My issues with 6 Degrees:

1. Too long, doesn't seem focused enough to me.  Some parts make me feel like I have ADD because I find my mind wandering.  This is something I do not typically suffer from.  :-)

2. Being admittedly more drawn to the harder stuff, much of this song is not in my favorite style of DT music.

3. The payoff is weak in the end, to me.  There is no epic climax.  I found myself (the first time I heard it) going, "that's how they just ended a 42 minute song?  Really?"  I still often feel that way when I listen to it.

So, my vote was not for that one.  I voted ITPOE, which is losing pretty badly I see.  It was a tossup between that and Count of Tuscany for me.

IMBI is good, but I prefer Voices alone.  Sorry for the sacrilegious-ness again.  ;-)

Jamesman42

After TCOT, SDOIT would be my next pick. I feel the 42 minutes pass very quickly. I feel there is a very focused energy about the song, but they go into a huge journey to tell you about it. The music is phenomenal and very, very colorful.
\o\ lol /o/

6 Degrees has a few sections I don't care for.

TCOT has a few sections I don't care for.

ITPOE has a lot of sections I don't care for.

AMBI has no sections I don't care for.

AMBI wins.

Pretty much all of this, except that I actually really like the fadeout. :P

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is one of my all time favourite Dream Theater songs. So...that.
