Wow, great songs (and suite) all of them.

The Count of Tuscany
A Mind Beside Itself
In the Presence of Enemies
Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence

In a crazy world where A Mind Beside Itself were ranked as one song these would all most likely make my top 10.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence is one of my all time favourite Dream Theater songs. So...that.

?

A Mind Beside Itself: a suite of 3 great songs! :)

JayOctavarium

this is a tough one...

six degrees? no

In the Presence of Enemies? maybe

The Count? no... but not as much no as Six Degrees

AMBI? maybe

A Mind and Enemies are too close to call it...

fuck it

A MIND BESIDE ITSELF

Six Degrees is my favorite DT epic, period.

ACoS and Octavarium can't compare to it at all for me. Six Degrees is so varied, yet cohesive. Brilliant composition, and (I believe) one of LaBrie's finest performances. Love that song to death. All 42 some-odd minutes of it.

My issues with 6 Degrees:

1. Too long, doesn't seem focused enough to me.  Some parts make me feel like I have ADD because I find my mind wandering.  This is something I do not typically suffer from.  :-)

2. Being admittedly more drawn to the harder stuff, much of this song is not in my favorite style of DT music.

3. The payoff is weak in the end, to me.  There is no epic climax.  I found myself (the first time I heard it) going, "that's how they just ended a 42 minute song?  Really?"  I still often feel that way when I listen to it.So, my vote was not for that one.  I voted ITPOE, which is losing pretty badly I see.  It was a tossup between that and Count of Tuscany for me.

IMBI is good, but I prefer Voices alone.  Sorry for the sacrilegious-ness again.  ;-)

To each his own. I find the ending very emotionally climactic.

I second this, point by point. It's like I typed it from an alternate universe.

Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence, hands down. I admit though, I prefer the live version with the Orchestra than the album version. It's bloody beautiful in every way, incredibly diverse whilst keeping it all together at the same time. It also almost won me a playwriting festival. So yup, favourite <3

I don't normally listen to A Mind Beside Itself as a whole but I love the songs on their own. It's between that or the Count and it's pretty damn close...

I went with 6DOIT.  But I am also curious as to why AMBI is included.

Well I included it because from a certain point of view, it is one song, in the same way that 6DOIT is also one song. It may be made up of individual songs, but they all act together to form one entity. Also, it meets the criteria of being an epic, since it's about 20 minutes long.

Well no. SDOIT was written AS ONE SONG and split up because they thought the novelty of sitting through 40 minutes of music would wear off after a while.

6 Degrees of total awesomeness for me. Even if you had included those you left out it would still be 6 degrees.

Dublagent66

You're right Sam.  Leaving ACOS & 8VM out was a good idea for this poll.  That way I get to pick 6DOIT!   :metal

Heretic

6DOIT and TCOT are really really close, but I'm going with TCOT because of how cohesive it feels to me and the wow factor I had when I first heard it; both are fantastic, though.

I voted for SDoIT, however I noticed you didn't include The Killing Hand, which I believe is considered DT's first 'epic', and would certainly not be considered one of the most popular ones.

Not sure why anyone would consider that an epic.

Cause long + segmented parts = epic?

How perculiar - let's make sure you are not actually me from a parallel universe:

My favorite color is green.

You (or me)?

6DOIT > AMBI > TCOT >>>>> ITPOE

I voted voted TCOT though because i was stupid and didn't see 6 Degrees.

If I'm following your ranking correctly, even if you didn't see 6 Degrees, you still should have chosen AMBI before TCOT... I'm confused by your confusion.

I was just giving a general ranking.

I don't consider AMBI to be an epic.
