I can't imagine anyone replacing Myung, tbh.

I bet we all would have said the same thing about Portnoy before he left.
We actually have said the same thing about Portnoy before he left.

If JM left, I highly, highly doubt that JP (and the rest of the band) would continue without him. Two of the three founding members would be gone at that point, and the (now rekindled) chemistry between JP and JM has always been crucial within DT imo.

What exactly are you referring to here?

I believe it's to where JM recently said that they are writing like how they used to (referring to JM and JP), and probably how it's more open or group oriented or something.
\o\ lol /o/

Ah okay. I thought you meant personal chemistry and I was confused.

The thing with that is, I can think of loads of drummers who are better than Portnoy.  Bassists of Myungs calibre are harder to come by, IMO.

The man warms up AND down, for crying out loud.

Andreas Blomqvist from Seventh Wonder would be an incredible fit. He writes some of the most incredible bass lines I've ever heard!

This.

Andreas is amazing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ICfiItqualI&feature=channel_video_title love this clip

I hate to say it, but I think the present Myung is replacable.  He used to be a lot more melodic.  But to answer the question I don't know many available bassists.  I say Tony Levin but he's honestly the only one I know that could work with DT.

The problem is more like they are not into the music.  ;)

The greatest jazzbassists in the world could learn anything by DT and propably play it cleaner and better then JM.

There are a some people that propably would be interested though. Philip Bynoe, Jonas Reingold, Dick Lövgren, The bassist from Seventh Wonder (loved his string skipping technique)

Someone told me recently that Lars Norberg from Spiral Arkitect is the greatest technical progmetal bassist in the world.

Haven´t heard them actually but it might be true   :P

the only one who i can think of is Steve diGiorgio or the guy from pestilence

if its gonna be a trend within DT for members to leave...than i'm gonna follow it and leave DT as a fan :-)

MP said around the release of Systematic Chaos that if either he or JP left, the band would not continue. But if JLB, JR or JM left, they would find a replacement and continue. So I think that all current members except JP are replaceable. But as somebody wrote, all current members seem quite flexible and thus I do not think that there will be personality clashes or so.

tri.ad

Yeah, but it's MP who said that. MP left, and the band has decided to continue; I think a statement from JP would hold way more value. Not that it would be necessary or adequate to expect such a statement from him at this point, though.

JLB is  really important for their sound actually. There are other guitarists that can play JP:s guitarparts and it sounds exactly like JP, in some cases cleaner then JP actually.

It´s more his songwriting that is so important for DT I guess.

JR has only been in DT för 12 years but he is really hard to replace. Propably harder then JM actually.

jmbeat

IMO I think that any more member replacements would be the it for me as the "die hard" fan I have been for the last 21 years, I went through that with YES and I can barely listen to them any more. At some point enough is enough, or if they ever do change another member especially another founding member, change the name of the band.

The bassist from Nightmare Cinema is looking for a band, I believe.

Mike LePond. I'm surprised nobody's brought him up. The SX basslines are pretty crazy.

I can't see him leaving Symphony X to join Dream Theater at this point in both bands' careers. That would just be really strange.

Ryan Martinie from Mudvayne...

This is who I initially thought - he can play multiple styles of "heavy" bass...may be a bit too weird for DT though.  I'd love to hear him w/ other projects.

Possibly true. A couple of the drummers that auditioned for DT are really busy with their bands as well but then again it´s possible that they weren´t too interested in joining DT at all. Derek Roddy didn´t seem too interested and propably not Priester either.  ;)

Obfuscation

In my opinion there is nobody that can replace him but if i had to choose myabe Tony Levin or Geddy Lee or Dan Briggs.

Jaffa

None of these people have names awesome enough to replace someone like Myung.
