*wonders if finish on the drums has something to do with new dt album artwork*

Has this been the case in the past?  It would make sense.

I can't recall the drum finish ever having anything to do with the artwork, usually the kick heads do though for the tour.
Usually the color scheme of the kit had something to do with the album cover, but not for every tour (e.g. MP's acrylic kit for the systematic chaos tour, which he claims it was also for tone (?)) and yeah the kick heads have usually resembled something from the album artwork.
Whether Mangini's new kit has anything to do with the new artwork or not, I think the idea of the paint job on the shells is to give it the affect like its a big machine or something :D. looks amazing.

I honestly can't recall a single instance where the drum color had anything to do with the artwork. Seriously, not a single instance. FII drumset was I think greenish and white, SFAM was purplish and white, as far as I know the 6DOIT and ToT were just black, 8vm was white, SC and BCSL were acrylic.

It wasn't acrylic? I skipped out that tour so I didn't get to see that drum set.

Still, the color will probably be dark, and metal drummers often have dark drums............it's not much of a stretch.

I'm not a pearl fan. It's like when ford drivers hate chevys or something, I side with Tama and DW and can't stand Pearl or Yamaha. But I am obviously just kidding about much of this, I don't really care if Mangini uses pearl.
Hey! Yamaha's are good (not as great as Tamas, of course)! Though Sabian shits all over Zildjian.
Sabian makes Zildjian look cheap the only cymbal thats even comparable are their K Dark Dry rides.

Sabian was started by the guy who started Zildjian because he had a fallout with the company.
No, Sabian was started by the Zildjian's owner younger brother. Robert Zildjian (Sabian's founder) is the brother of Armand Zildjian (the current Zildjian owner), they were both sons of Avedis Zildjian III who passed the company onto the older brother (the family tradition). They both went into a legal dispute and Robert left the company and founded Sabian.

As far as sound quality goes, I was just as happy with my Zildjian as I am with my Sabian. But my Zildjians broke.........constantly. After a while I just gave up and completely switched to Sabian, I know own over 30 Sabians and have only broken I think 1 or 2 in the past 6 years.

I'm in the same boat, plus all the variety Sabian offers in cymbals makes me not wanna use Zildjian again.

I've yet to hear a better sounding hi-hat or ride than the Paragons!

I guess the finish was in development before then.  But Tama suggested it after hearing the album name and gave him a kit specifically themed for the tour.

tgstk2

wow what a kit!!! i am very interessted in how quickly he can go from snare to octobans and back.  the normal kit.
it's a big kit....but i he's setup is so strange with 2 snares above eachother..never seen somethink like this before.

go pearl!:P

theanalogkid7

I honestly don't care what brand he uses so long as he sounds good.  So far, from all the videos I've seen/heard, his drums sound fine.

Having said that, I would KILL to hear him on a DW set.  I've always been a big fan of DWs.... and Paragon symbols.... really I just like Neil Peart's sets.

YtseJamittaja

I still wondering how he can play these octobans?! Looking forwrd to see it live...  :)

Well that's now the kit he recorded on, and there's a photoshoot background, so yup. I'd say it's a photoshoot. :)

Nice! I'm obviously not good with judging what a photoshoot background looks like. I wonder what the PS would be for

QuoteWhat a week at Pearl in Nashville. The 2 touring kits are ready. I'll be using the fully lefty & righty remote hats with 4 kicks (26,22,22,18) and 2 EPro trigger drums. I'll have 4 more EPro pads for my hands in order to trigger all percussion sounds. The mini snare is my signature one painted to match. The toms range from 6 to 20 all even diameters. I'll have my usual REMO, Shure, Vater and Zildjian gear. I cannot thank all those companies enough and can't wait to smack the DT tunes with this Space Ship of a kit.

A lot of people worked 10 hr days to build two of 'em. Nub from "American Choppers" painted one of them with DaVinci lines and used my "phi" dimensions from the signature snare to make it look like a contoured space vehicle. The head of AR ...@Pearl and Petrucci's GTR tech cut pipes for 4 days! We shot lots of pics & videos, including 4 solos to test that I could even reach things :):) Pearl will unveil all kinds of info about them asap. That's because they fed me pounds of Tennessee BBQ, so I my arms were a bit restricted. I have a 1 min. personal video that I'll post a bit later

:metal :metal :metal

YtseJamittaja

This is different kit than the earlier what we talk about  :o

Looks better without that strange design.

nikatapi

That is a crazy kit, i can't wait to see what Mike will do on this beast.

YtseJamittaja

Other kit:

Mangini:
Here's the Nub painted kit. What an artist...I could've never come up with this... it is really off the charts cool how many people are contributing to helping me get ready to smash the stage :):) The new album is so amazing to me. I just can't wait to play with these guys !!

Dream Team

A space-themed DT album would be really cool.

Adami

Maybe it's the ever changing angles, but what is the difference between the two kits?

Whoever designed that second drumset is a nub

I was thinking the same thing. :lol

Tunnel Vision

So let me get this straight.

They designed two kits for Mike, one kit has a special paint job by Nub (the second of the two pictures) with designs on the body. The second kit is of a similar color but does not have the design in the paint job. Is this correct? It is hard for me to tell the two kits apart from the pictures he posted.

Also, are both kits exactly the same in term of placement of all the drums and cymbals? As far as I can tell, both kits are exactly the same aside from the paint job.

tri.ad

Awesome looking kits. I wonder how he'll use the EPro pads within the context of DT. I can imagine him using it for triggering the timbale sounds in Metropolis Pt. 1, but regarding other songs, I have no idea.
