I'm happy they went with Mangini, are you?

Fuck yeah!
Cool, whatever.
No

Oh boy, I've been waiting for this! Seeing and hearing Illumination Theory like this really shows how DT did Mangini dirty on the self-titled album – the amount of detail lost in the CD mix is downright criminal! Some super-cool cymbal work in the verse and chorus in particular.

Can we please get an Andy Sneap remix of this album? Cause the songs are mostly excellent!

Maybe we can get someone to make a mashup with this drum mix.

Beautiful.

Finally got around to watching this. AMAZING!

Love the comments.

That was indeed amazing. I knew the guy could play but it's truly something to watch him do those one handed tom rolls. Watching him switch from playing right handed to left handed was a trip. I know we already had a live performance on the 4th wall video but seeing this dedicated view was awesome.

How many fucking hi-hats does he have on his kit?

Class act! I will miss him playing in DT.

Undoubtedly one of the greatest drummers who ever lived.

Thanks for all the beautiful music you gave us.

It's even crazier when you consider he's not only playing left and right handed, but also switching the leading foot as well. Truly ambidextrous.

4 hi-hats, if I recall correctly

Damn, it probably makes it easier for him to play those crazy patterns. Also that section where he's alternating playing both left and right ride cymbals was excellent. Illumination Theory was already one of my fav DT tracks, this made it a lot more enjoyable to listen and watch.

Mangini himself will tell you he's not ambidextrous, but had to work hard to be able to do that.. ;-)

Max Kuehnau

of course he had to work for being ambidextrous. As did Simon Phillips (who also is ambidextrous and who is one of MM's heroes and one of mine) They both still are ambidextrous though (or open handed players, which is another term that is correct)

Carter Beauford is another great example, though I don't really like DMB too much anymore.

I'm told they apparently are (were?) an in interesting band and that I should check them out (which I might do at some point)

I just watched a bunch of Simon Phillips solos and there is something about his playing that I hear in Mike's. I think it's a phrasing thing.

yeah, and keep in mind that Simon is one of the earliest open handed players in history (after Billy Cobham, who invented it in 1959, and Lenny White of Return To Forever in 1972), so Mike had to go back to Lenny, Simon and Billy to work on it. Simon himself praises Mike for his innovations to the technique. Simon said that Mike perfected it. (makes sense he says so)

I'm not the hugest DMB fan for various reasons (some non-musical) but I LOVE Carter.  I have a set of sticks from him from one of the H.O.R.D.E. tours (I think).  I've seen DMB a couple times, but not since, say, the late 90s.

one piece by them that I remember is Don't Drink The Water (I think?), I found that one fairly interesting when I first listened to it (over 25 years ago). They opened with that one during a show broadcast by Rockpalast, which is the greatest music programme on German TV ever btw, which is what I watched them on.

Has MM made any public comment about Parasomnia yet? Do you think he's listened? Do you think he likes it?

Nothing public that I have seen.  Hard to say whether he listened.  He might.  But then again, even though he was perfectly gracious about the situation publicly and, from everything we heard, privately as well, it's also kind of human nature that he might be more bent right now, now that it is a reality of a new album being out that he is not on.  So who knows?

TheHoveringSojourn808

I'd like to believe he loves it and is supportive of his brothers! If I ever run into him I'll ask

I'm sure he wishes them well in the sense that it's the polite professional thing to say but I don't see why he'd deeply care about Parasomnia or how well it does.

Same.  Not sure why he would care at all.

I can't find the post, but when the reunion was first announced, Mangini posted on Portnoy's FB wall and it was something like "can't wait to hear what you've had bottled up inside you all these years". This seems a bit too specific for him to not care at all.

That sounds like professionalism and courtesy to me, not actual excitement to hear anything.

But whatever.

The real question is what are all the eggs Mike says are hatching this month?

Aching men's feet?  :lol  (I had  to, sorry) Seriously though, my guess is his next musical project (since he was mentioning some things about this in the beginning of this year), or something that relates to that

Another egg has hatched: Outcry video

"Here's the most requested song for me to release in Drum Cam form: OUTCRY. And I added a TON of notes to help with all the inquiries over the years about this piece. Read the description please, it explains a lot of "why" with the kit, parts, click, etc. etc."

https://youtu.be/-NNa_Z6UFHw?si=tEBpjoL5QjLJHZ9d

Insane amount of detail in that instrumental section.

From the video description:

QuoteEnjoy this if you like the song. I hope the commentary helps since I'm also responding to inquiries about this song. After a zillion explanations and demos and videos, I also still have to answer to: why so many drums? Watch what I hit and listen to the actual notes being played by the keys, bass and guitar. I am also playing time signatures different that the click in my ear. The click is there SO THE VIDEOS LINE UP PERFECTLY and also, SO THE DELAYS ARE IN TIME. I could care less about those things, but that was the job, which I care about a lot. I "need" a click as much as someone needs to be stung in the eye socket by hornets. I am so grateful to fans with humor over the years. Yes, I LOVED the scorecards. The truth hurts sometimes, but it makes us stronger.  I know in the intensity of fans made me focus hard every, single night. I miss those looks.... I'll see them again in 2025. Peace to EVERYONE AND EVERYBODY!! Be happy.

That plus I think it's just hard for non-drummers like myself to note all this stuff he's doing even though you can always find the time signatures online and hear the fast parts. I've listened to Outcry 5 million times but from that clip I just learned to appreciate a bit more about the interaction between his parts and the others in the band.
