I joined a while back just to post when the news was official.  I held back quite a few times from posting over the past so many weeks.  I've been on your forum...reading your posts, and speculating with a friend of mine who is also a passionate and interested fan ever since Mike decided to leave.  I'll be brief, but I wanted to say a few things despite this being my first post...

I've enjoyed several shows with Mike Portnoy...I've met him.  Always loved seeing him play...with DT and any other project (my favorite being the G3 dates with John), and I was sad to see him go.  I flew to New York for "Score," and I had a hard time imagining DT without Mike initially.  I was a member of his forum, though I've decided to refrain from posting for some time.  I hope to discuss the band here now...seeing as how I need a new home.  I hope I'm, at this point, well acquainted with the in's and outs of your board.

I think these videos were a good way to usher in the new era, though I was skeptical at the outset.  I was struck by the emotion with which Mike Mangini greeted the news.  And now, I am very excited to hear the next phase...

I know Wildoer has been posting here and just wanted to say that I thought his audition was incredible.  I felt for him when he received his call. He is excellent. I would be proud if I were him.  The talent assembled for these auditions was immense.

Anyway...hope to keep posting, and I'll definitely be reading.

I have a strong distaste for Pearl and Yamaha drums.

Fair to say.  I think that in the hands of Paul Northfield and whoever mixes the album though it will be great.

Congrats to Mike Mangini. Congrats to Dream Theater!
Well done  :tup

Oh I'm sure. And some levels of Pearl sound great. My distaste for them is in principle. Now if he decides to switch to DW or Tama........I'm good.

Oddly, DW isn't quite my thing.  In the context of DT they're too hollow sounding.

Dreams really do come true... well mine did. At the start of this I dreamy Mike got the job, even though I was wanting Thomas Lang- still think he'd be awesome, but let's look to the future.

The documentary has turned me around, and I'm so happy for that as had DT just announced Mike as the drummer I'd be feeling rather disappointed at this point.
As it is I was very impressed with Mike's drumming, freaked by the faces he was pulling, but very happy at the emotion he showed prior to and after the announcement. I certainly won't be questioning his commitment.
I really hope he gets a new drum kit as the one pictured is fugly.

And to Peter Wildoer, excellent audition, you're a classy guy and a great drummer. It seems you pushed them close.

What a brilliant way to make the fans fall in love with someone before he ever takes the stage. Bravo, DT! :metal

I don't know much if anything about Mike Mangini, but what I saw on the new DT documentary he impressed the hell out of me. Not just his playing, as the guys said, almost anyone can play the songs, but it was his desire to be in the band. His enthusiasm was incredible compared with the other 6. What I do know of him I was surprised at this, but was blown away by it. Personally I was getting tired of what seemed to be Portnoy's ego and control of the band. This is going to be a fresh new start for DT and I for one am looking forward to it.

I have been a fan since the very beginning of DT. The last 4-5 albums for me had some great tunes, but overall as Portnoy sid, it was getting stale. This is the kick in the butt DT needed. The rest of the band seems very fired up more than I have ever seen them. Hell this even got Myung to speak! LOL

That's good. I would've prefer Marco but Mike seems to be a great fit in the band.

Great news! In all honesty, he was my third favourite behind Marco and Peter, but only by the tiniest of margins, and the fact is that all three of them were really amazing, great fits for the band and frankly I'm incredibly happy that it was one of them. And in terms of personality and character fit, I think he's the most perfect - his response when receiving the call was genuinely touching and I'm just really happy for him. :D

It was hard not to get a bit choked up during the doc when they all give Mangini the good news!  Very worthwhile ending to a long wait.  I cannot wait to hear the next album from this band!

Congratulations Mr. Mangini, your drumming has already inspired me to further my apprenticeship with the craft and you definitely have earned your new home in DT!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Dream Theater, Mr. Mangini! Here's to a wonderful new chapter in Dream Theater history!  :metal

Nice. They now have the worlds fastest drummer. Guess that means they're the worlds fastest band?

They'll be playing all their unisons to MM's 128th snare rolls pretty soon.

I was thinking maybe the only reason they hired Mangini is becasue his first name is Mike, so when they play they won't make a mistake in saying "Hey Mike, good riff" and think they were talking to Portnoy.

I'm so done with Portnoy! LOL

yeshaberto

something about mangini hit me the wrong way from the beginning, but after seeing his response on video to receiving the position, I was moved by his heart to want to be in DT

I have to say all the time leading up to his audition, and watching videos people kept posting saying "Look at this, he's amazing" I always felt let down a bit. Minnemann or Lang were all very "beat-oriented" in their solos and instrumentals, and you could easily tell apart their rhythms and stuff, while Mangini often times seemed to be just really abstract and "off". But, after watching his videos multiple times I've started to realize what he's doing. He's really really precise in his playing, and gets down to little details and builds up his drum parts while focusing on minute details. It's why his drum parts always seem so sparse, you're like "wtf is he doing, he's just playing the hihat really fast and then hitting a cymbal", but then you realize the little syncopation and detail he's adding to everything. It's like he's taking his time to tell a story with the drums. I think you'd be hardpressed to find a video of him playing generic fast quads all over his kit like MP even though he can obviously do it.

I'm sold.

I'm very pleased with Mike as the new drummer!  :metal

This documentary is very cool. God damn I love Derek Roddy's blasting.
