SDoIT is such a strong album. Top tier of DT albums for me but I always wondered what the band was trying
to accomplish or convey with the end of that song. Just wondering if most peeps like it or don't like it?

Apologize if it's been discussed. I searched and didn't see a thread. But I'm a DTF nOOb so...

There's discussion on it in this thread.

I love the ending, it fits the built up mood and topic of the song wonderfully.

KevShmev

Yes.  Very cool, albeit a very different, ending to one of their best songs of the Rudess era.

Durg

I like but then it just drags on too long.  Why do they fade it out and then bring it back?  Seems a bit too much.

bosk1

As far as just the ending, it is really cool and fits the song.  But, as a practical matter, I got tired of listening to it a long time ago and sometimes end up skipping the ending when I listen to the album now.

emtee

Thanks for the link. I was hoping for a bit more focus on just the ending though as it seems an
entirely different animal than the main body of the song. I love ths song but just can't seem to
connect with the end.

Mladen

Great song, except for the last two minutes. The ending really does bring the song down...

Metro

I like it. It kinda reminds me of the ending of Mr. Self Destruct - Nine Inch Nails

MrSD's ending is way more annoying imo. I quite like the ending of Misunderstood, however.

TL

I like it. It drags a bit, but it has a cool vibe to it, and I like how non-typical it is for them.

pogoowner

It's not my favorite thing in the world, but it fits the song pretty well, and I never skip it.

I remember when the album was released and I first listened to it, I hated the ending.  Now, I'm indifferent.  Definitely don't like it though.  At the time, I was actually shocked that a band like DT (known for their precision and technicality) would include such a "throw away" section at the end of a great great tune.  It didn't seem to fit with what I'd come to expect from the band.

Discussion on the outro inevitably seems to come up whenever Misunderstood does.  It certainly is one of the more divisive parts of any song between fans.

Yes.  Very cool, albeit a very different, ending to one of their best songs of the Rudess era.

jcmistat

Nope, I'd like Misunderstood better if the ending didn't drag.

Same deal with Repentance. Whenever I listen to it I stop right after the solo ends. Before it repeats and MP starts talking.

I think the general consensus is certain DT songs would be better if cut shorter.

yorost

You think there's a consensus on Misunderstood?

jcmistat

Yes. I think more people would choose to have the ending cut or at least drag on less.

Bone_Daddy

Love the song and the ending is fitting but I will admit the ending is too much for me in length.

jcmistat

Either way they both work.

Taken from dictionary.com

1. majority of opinion: The consensus of the group was that they should meet twice a month.

2. general agreement or concord; harmony.

yorost

Yes, the second part is what makes consensus different than majority.  The minority group must be accepting of the majority opinion in a show of solidarity.  In an open forum of opinions just about the only way to achieve that is overwhelming support of one opinion so that the minority accepts itself as an aberration.

Jamesman42

Well, the ending makes sense in that the band really seemed experimental in their songwriting. It was JR's sophomore effort with the band, and they were seeing where JR could move around musically. I sense a lot of experimentation on SDOIT as a whole.
\o\ lol /o/

Dublagent66

6DOIT is my favorite DT album and Misunderstood is a great track, but whenever I listen to it, like Bosk said, I just can't get to end without skipping.

Ħ

I love the first half but hate the second half, I think it ruins the song.

DarkLord_Lalinc

I love it. One of the main reasons 6DOIT is their best album in my book is because of all the experimentation done by the guys there.

Octawakeimages

I think the ending is actually pretty awesome,  doesn't bother me at all and I like it.  I think it gives an eerie feeling to the song,  especially when it fades back in.  Gives me chills.  :)

ZirconBlue

I like everything but Petrucci's "noise solo".

Chino

I hate the end of Misunderstood. I won't listen to the studio version. I play the track off of the greatest hits to avoid this frustration.

pain of occupation

i remember a year or so after the album had been out, my best bud tells me he always skips the fucking intro!
well, not only does that prove to be a bit more difficult, but it begs the question, why!?

so i says, i say "dudeman! if anything, skip the ending." ...but even then, i'm not in full agreement with said advice.

ekuban

The ending is good, the song is one of their best ever. The ending is just the little xtra for the fan who bought the album and up till that point had only heard the Radio version, Oh wait DT doesent get played on the radio. Ah well,  its the Radios Loss. Bieber, Gaga ect. have way more talent anyways, right?

Ultimetalhead

I quite like the ending. The breath that can be heard when the music fades back in is downright chilling.

Gadough

I don't like it at all. I skip to The Great Debate whenever the outro starts.

sonatafanica

The outro is fucking cool. It really fits in with the experimental nature of that album.

Adami

Don't love it. Don't hate it. No problem with it.
