Yeah, possibly, but I can't see them taking any direct shots at MP.

I've often wondered how comfortable JP and JM were with the lyrics to Raise The Knife.

"Innocent Faded" - JP wrote about the deterioration of his relationship with Kevin Moore, while Kevin was still in the band.

"Where are You Now" - JP writes about Kevin Moore's departure.

How so? Is this common knowledge?

Implode

I thought so—at least about the first one. I've never heard the second one.

RaiseTheKnife

Yes, it is common knowledge.  Rich Wilson, Lifting Shadwos, page 160:

"On the flipside [to Moore's lyrics in 6:00 which discuss his growing detachment with the band] the albums most melodic track Innocence Faded had lyrics written by John Petrucci, and were inspired by the gradual deterioration of his friendship with Moore."

Consider that "Where are you Now" was the second song written in the FII sessions, in close proximity with "Raise the Knife".  MP wrote his reaction, and JP wrote his own.  Also, I find the lyrics to be quite evident that he is talking about Moore.  JP goes as far as desribe what it might be like for the band to be on stage and Moore watching in the audience, "only one step away", but no longer in the band.

I'm sure this was confirmed by JP or MP, but could not locate the specific source.

RaiseTheKnife

Hell, at this point I would not be surprised if the new drummer wrote lyrics about what its like being the new drummer in Dream Theater:

"Clandestine Destiny" or "Please Everbody Like Me"

If it's on Lifting Shadows, they probably said that. Cool.

ariich

That second part wasn't from Lifting Shadows, only the bit about Innocence Faded.

Didn't JLB write the lyrics for Where Are You Now?

I think he wrote The Way it Used to Be instead. Which could also be about Kevin Moore... I don't know, maybe the lyrics were a JLB interpretation of what Moore felt when he left DT.

EDIT: I Do think they'll make a song  (Probably Penned by Petrucci) about the relationship and breakup with Portnoy, it just simply has to be there.

SnakeEyes

Oh brother, I hope not.  The sooner we move on from Portnoy, the better.

ricky

snakes, i wanna disagree with you just to disagree with you, but can't think of anything to say.

PetFish

I really hope there's nothing lyrical regarding MP, good or bad, just let it be.  If the relationship doesn't heal over the next few years then, by all means, say something.  Right now it's too soon and burning bridges right away sucks.

I just want a sold prog-metal album that inspires me and gives me hope for DT's music.  That's all.

SeventhSon

I hope that the songwriting on the new record is a bit more mellow and closer to their old material in feel. I get the feeling that a lot of this "balls 'n' chunk" attitude that's been creeping ever-so-much into the band's material the last ten years has been, to a considerable degree, Mike's doing. Hopefully the other guys tone things down a bit more in that regard and go with a sound that's a bit more like your traditional DT.

Groundhog

^^^ Yes, exactly. I also hope that MP was the one to push DT more towards "balls 'n chunk" attitude and now we'll get to hear a lighter sound with breathing room. We'll just have to wait and see.

FretMuppet

They'll probably still have some 'balls n chunk' songs, since a lot of people do like their heavy side, but I think it will only be about 1-2 songs. Sort of like how Panic Attack is in relation to the rest of Octavarium

I don't see the Kevin Moore connection in The Way It Used To Be.  I always figured the song was about James return to his home town in Canada, and how it changed from how he remembers it.

ddtonfire

"Twelve Mile Bay" is obviously a metaphor for Kevin's ego.

Dream_Theater01

I do agree that there will probably be a song that people think is about MP leaving, whether it really is or not.

No. It has been discussed before and JP was pushing the metal side as much as Mike.

Exactly JP has always voiced his passion for heavy music. However, this does not mean they will not make "lighter" songs. Either direction, I am excited.

And judging from Static Impulse JLB likes the metal as well.

TheOutlawXanadu

These things, combined with the fact they might want fans to think they are still the same old DT everyone knows and loves without MP, leads me to think the next album is basically just going to be BC&SL or SC v 2.0.

Ben_Jamin

I doubt it since JP looked like he's tired of the usual structure in the BC&SL vid.

fadetoblackdude7

I wonder if the new album will be self-titled to coincide with the whole 'new era' of DT

ddtonfire

That would kind of be a kick in the face to Mike since it was his recently passed father who suggested the name.

Ben_Jamin

It would depend how different they sound. If its evident Mike got his way all the time on the records, then I say self-title.

Though it might be harder to push your ideas when there's not another person that would agree with you. Not that Rudess will object to metal stuff left and right but I could easily see JP coming up some some random metal riff and Mike getting excited about it to the point where they'd flesh it into a mediocre riff instead of exploring other options.

TheOutlawXanadu

One thing I disagree with Mike on from a writing stand-point is in regards to how you use a good riff. I remember he and JP were talking about a solo section, and how it had a great riff under it, and Mike was like, "It would be a shame if that riff went to waste and was only under a solo".

Me, I think that if all your riffs are great, even the ones under a solo, you're gold.

ricky

it's kinda hard to judge portnoy's involvement in the dt writing method from one particular instance.

orcus116

There's been a lot of studio video plus message board explanations from him over the last two albums that has given some good insight, actually.
