Looking back, I do believe he used the distorted organ on ANTR and it sounded cool. I guess I'm alright with it  :metal

DarkLord_Lalinc

The organ thing he does in the chorus of The Dark Eternal Night is cool, as well. It brings some melody and crunchiness to the whole thing, instead of just doubling the guitar.

LieLowTheWantedMan

We need organ solos a la Blind Faith everywhere! :hefdaddy

JR, just play a bunch of fucking organs!  :metal

Seems like a good bet the tone of the album is going to be angry. Driven by some pretty harsh
things that continue to go down. That might be a very good thing though because it means
real soul and emotion were the primary drivers. That's always a good thing IMO.

This. Nothing like emotionally-inspired seven string heaviness for a pissed off tone on the album.

If anything, I would have thought the album would be a bit lighter or mixed. Sort of like 6DOIT/8VM/SFAM seeing as though their recent albums were quite heavy.

Another Train of Thought?  I hope not.

I've always found more soul and emotion in Dream Theater's lighter stuff than in their darker material.  The exception is Awake, where they managed to pull off the aggressive thing fairly well.  Still, it's not overwhelmingly "harsh."

emtee

I expect some reference to lyrics in Raise The Knife.

I'm expecting a good balance of light and dark. I think the order will be something like this:
Light to dark
Dark to light
Light to dark
Dark to light

ddtonfire

I think it will be like a conglomeration of Petrucci's solo album and Rudess's solo albums, albeit a bit heavier. There will be more standard solo sections since they won't have a Mike filter to say no. The longest song will still be less than 15:00. They'll really throw their hearts and minds into it because they have something to prove, much like they did in 1991 during the Images and Words sessions.

I see what you did there. :lol

YtseBitsySpider

as long as organ doesn't equal silly ragtime piano fills..Im fine with that.

I like Chino's album formula speculation. Something like that works for me. And despite recent discoveries I hope JP does all the lyrical story telling in the songs.

Aniland

There is absolutely no reason to assume the next album will be super aggressive.

HEAVEN MUST BE MORE THAN THIS

All I'm really expecting is something different from the past 3 albums. Hopefully a fresh sound. I can't wait. :)

FretMuppet

I hope we have a fresh sounding production on the album, without all that noise war stuff

Ħ

I just thought of something.

All of solo albums from JP, JLB, and JR are short....or at least shorter.  MP is really the only one that has been involved in huge largescale songs (Transatlantic, Neal Morse, etc).

So I don't know if we'll get any 15 minute+ songs this time around.

I hope we will get something to that length, I have a feeling its going to be quite proggy and eclectic.

Very nice. :lol :tup

SystematicThought

I'm expecting the next album to be a concept album called "The Reply" The lyrics will revolve around how DT wanted to reply to Mike's calls, but couldn't. The album will be their way of answering his call and the lyrics will be their responses. just kidding

Does anyone think that there will be a song to Mike or discussing his departure in some way? Like we're sorry it turned out this way.

Perhaps, but in a quite metaphorical way, rather than up-front and direct. Still, I would prefer a nice conceptual album, with lyrics based on a fictional story, but something dark and sinister. Who knows, the story could have fictional characters who somehow tie in to real life people so they might discuss his departure through the actual storyline.

The possibilities are endleeesssss

...Sacrifice!  Moments wasted, isolated...

I could go for a very modern edge sound, but with more fantasy lyrics. Kind of the way that LaBrie is in that Eden's Curse song... but with the musical sentiments of Petrucci's more mainstream sounding songs (Endless Sacrifice, Misunderstood, These Walls). I would, however, like an extremely proggy thing.

TheOutlawXanadu

Lyrics - My speculation is that we get one Myung lyric. My hope is that we get lots of lyrics having to do with Portnoy's departure; however, none as blatant as, say, the lyrics to "Tuscany".

Structure - My speculation and hope is that we get 8 - 9 songs.

Playing - My speculation is that we get something like BC&SL. One or two guitar-key duels and everything else has a one instrument solo. My hope is that we only get one instrument solos and maybe some catchy unisons.

Style - My speculation is that we get nothing subtle. It's going to have lots of balls, but no harsh vocals. My hope is that the album is more somber than usual, with lots of Jordan piano and Myung bass.

Kosmo

The album should seriously be called Eleven. *shrug* Sounds cool to me.

ddtonfire

Come to think of it, I bet it will be very Awake-like.

FretMuppet

I hope it will have a lot of atmospheric soundscapes, so the music breathes nicely. Sort of like These Walls intro and Octavarium. But what would be fantastic is a little track or a section with just acoustics + bass playing a nice tune together polyrhythmically, kinda like Opeth's Requiem but DT-ised

No. I hate fictional lyrics... it's cheesy.

Lyrics like the ones on Awake, FII, Octavarium are far better.

Tomislav95

I want something great like mix of Awake and I&W with some great instrumental section like SoC from ToT :tup

darkshade

i think we'll get a title track. It will be 55 minutes long. It will have a 4 minute instrumental intro track and an outro track consisting of the only ballad, at 3 and a half minutes.

Fictional doesn't necessarily mean about monsters and fairies. By fictional, I meant a story that is made up but realistic. SFAM has a great storyline

Edit: Systematic Chaos has some nice fantasy lyrics though, it suits the album

Just to let you know, I had a dream last night from which I learnt one thing: the album will be released in Europe on 29th July, in the UK on 1st August, and in the US on 2nd August.

You heard it here first.
