I received a phone call this morning from an old entertainment lawyer that I've known for a long time, and he called to catch up, and exchange good Christmas wishes. He works in the music business, and as we were talking he mentioned that the RUMOR he had heard from some people he knows is that the band had selected John Macaluso as the new drummer.

Of course, this is a rumor, and I could almost bitch slap myself for even repeating it here. Until the band decides to tell everyone, well then it's just a rumor, and I hate rumors as much as the next guy. The ONLY reason I posted this is because I had not heard his name mentioned very often. What do you think if he turns out to be the guy? I have to admit, I don't know alot about Macaluso.

Leaving the content of it aside for a bit: Why does this deserve its own thread?

Also, this "some people someone knows" is far too vague to be taken seriously. No offence.

Ben_Jamin

I think he'd fit well. Apparently though, ARK is supposed to be reuniting. So maybe that didn't work and he decided to do this. haha as I typed this ARK just came on. :metal :metal

LTE777

John is currently in Europe working on Ark's new album, doing clinics and teaching throughout Dec/Jan.

I agree with the above, this does not need a new thread and I think given the evidence so far, three things will happen. It will wither be Mike Mangini, Marco M or DT is holding up the announcement because Mike has apparently 'begged 'the band to let him drum on the new album (per the MP forum and a new apparent Mike Portnoy Interview posted on there).

guysullavin

I say lock this thread, then if he IS right, unlock it and allow discussion.

farren

Macaluso has already been discussed in the 38-page drummer speculation thread.  Please do your job, be a moderator, lock your thread and bring your rumor to the appropriate thread.

glaurung

I have no idea who he is, so I'll have to head to youtube and do a bit of research until I have an opinion.

Metabog

Just looked it up, and I think I like him. Really tiny setup though, and weird drumming posture, but very powerful and precise drumming. Very similar to MP, unlike Mangini/Minneman who are more virtuoso style.

That's actually one of my favorite albums, I just didn't know it was him playing the drums, so that's a plus for me.

Do you understand what rumor means? No "offence".

antigoon

Hope you guys are ready for a lengthy verbal bashing :lol

They were asking why this had its own thread instead of being posted in the "Place your bets" thread, which has basically become THE hotbed of rumormongering.  You also might want learn that "offence" is a legitimate way to spell "offense" before you try and catch someone on their spelling mistakes.

And Farren, if you have a real issue with a moderator or admin, I've found the best way to address it is through a PM.

ON THE ACTUAL TOPIC OF JOHN MASCALUSO: My thoughts about him can be shortened to "meh."  Don't think I'd be too thrilled about him as the new drummer, but I'd hopefully get more excited if I dug a little deeper.

Leorimus

You now... I've always liked John Macaluso's work in TNT and specially in ARK, but I thought DT was looking for a drummer above MP's level not below...
But besides that... check this vid of Macaluso... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zIDvB4cGRo

Couldn't help but notice that he's got the ugliest style of drumming I've ever seen!!! LOL

PS: the actual performace (if you don't look at him playing) it's really good, but not DT good.

glaurung

Just from watching a couple videos on youtube I think he's perfectly capable of of playing MP's parts.

Gadough

If it is true...a 3rd John? Oh well, I guess they have to compete with the 3 Michaels from Symphony X.

LKap13

It would also make them the 5 J's.

I suppose I'd prefer Macaluso to Mangini. But then my favorite of the ones talked about has been Priester.

Oh brother, shut up about how this doesn't need its own thread.  I swear, some people are like old ladies around here, complaining about every little thing.  Does it really bother you that much?  I, and I'm sure other people around here, find this interesting.  Tempus, thanks for the post.

Global Laziness

Why did I think that Macaluso had already been ruled out? Hmm...

I agree

ReaPsTA

Maybe I'm wrong, but I have the feeling Macaluso is above Portnoy's level from a purely technical standpoint.  And if you think he's not that interesting of a drummer, go to his website and listen to his solo album.

You sure are raging a lot recently.

I also agree this doesn't deserve it's own thread, and if a lesser known member had made it, it'd be locked.

I don't really know much about Macaluso, I just know he toured in place of Mangini, he filled in for Mangini, he was the back up idea for Mangini.

Not sure that excites me too much.

Hmm, I didn't think of it that way. I'm really not too keen on what I've seen of Mangini so...yeah, I agree.

Oh I love Mangini. But it would be like picking Charlie Z over Portnoy. Why not just get the better one?

But maybe Macaluso is better, I dunno. I don't remember being overly impressed by what I heard.

That's cool. I mean, you kind of have to be impressed by his speed, but the rest of pretty subject to interpretation. So I can understand.

Yeah, exactly. People keep telling me to check out this and that and all I see is speed and nothing else.

It was nice to visit his myspace and hear JLB's voice.
