Wow, I didn't know that every single DT song was "popular".

Learning to Live
Fatal Tragedy
Lines in the Sand
Die, In a fire, right now.

I dont get how people hate Lines in the Sand. probably the best song off of FII. And learning to live has the best Vocal solo. ever. of all time.

Mine is Blind Faith and Misunderstood. Both of these are in Chaos in Motion TO, and they almost ruined the DVD for me.
It's not a vocal solo by any stretch of the imagination. It is amazing I will agree, but the rest doesn't quite match up to that moment.

And about the Lines in the Sand statement, are you not aware of Trial of Tears?  ;)
Never a big fan, I'm giving it a second thought, but its hard to beat Lines in the Sand for me.

AwakeFromOctavarium

I didn't go through the whole thread, but in terms of general popularity, I do not get the love for Panic Attack, well save the fact that it was featured on Rock Band or something.

If there's another song it has to be Peruvian Skies

I don't think Panic Attack is regarded as one of DT's most popular songs.

AwakeFromOctavarium

Not the most, but in mainstream sense, Panic Attack is easily one of the most well-known song.

well, I think its safe to put it the most Rock Band-suitable song out there. If there were a single to be put out of a somewhat recent album, it would be it.

Lowdz

Innocence Faded and caught In A Web. They were nearly album beakers for me at the time. Now I love the rest of the album but not these two.

And I don't get the love for the solo in Under A Glass Moon.

Moonchild

Don't like these "heavy" songs of DT but they seem to be popular.

Panic Attack
Constant Motion
The Glass Prison
This Dying Soul

Thats a first, never seen someone show dis-appreciation for TGP

Zantera

Learning to Live - one of the DT-songs i like the least.
A Change of Seasons - good song, but after 20-30 listens, i still can't remember much about it without listening.
As i Am - apart from some cool riffs, i find it to be one of the weakest links on ToT.
The Ministry of Lost Souls - nothing really grabs me.
The Count of Tuscany - don't care much for the lyrics or the song.
Trial of Tears - a good song with some great parts, still nothing really mindblowing about it.
Scarred - probably my least favorite from Awake, while still being very good, i don't find it to be better then just that.

There's a few.
In my spare time I make music! Check it out. :)

I wasn't a fan when I've heard TGP and Panic Attack first on Gigantours live CD. I thought them as a long wank attack, TGP with the weird vocals interplay never really enjoyed except the last part. It detracted me from listening to DT a couple of years until I gave a new go to Octavarium more melodic and tasteful approach.

I've also disappreciated "The Glass Prison" in the past, but I do it rarely because I know I'm in the minority as most people love it.  If I ranked my all-time DT songs, it would be in my bottom five.  For me, the song is uninteresting and is just 10 mins or so of loudness.  I prefer when my epics blend loudness/softness and different elements.  Like "Voices."  TGP is like a noise fest, in my opinion.  I think I'm just not a fan of the ToT/ass-and-balls-type DT.  I like beautiful DT.  And the Portnoy lyrics just come across to me as high-schoolish.  I know I'm in the minority, and I've come to accept that.  But for me, "The Glass Prison" is one song I never "get" and I've never understood the massive love for it.  Hopefully, one day I get it!

I don't particularly hate or love TGP, but that song, for me, does not deserve the recognitions it gets. If someone recommends DT's heaviest song as TGP, I'll eagerly disagree. I'll have to borrow some explanations from Mebert, as I also think that the song is too much of a noisefest. ToT was a disaster for me, and TGP was something like an overture of the disaster. Well, I hope I don't attract much flame from this post.

Gotta go with The Mirror.  Really, the most bland repetetive riff you can think of, plus drumming that is waaay below MP's skill level, plus the way CJS sings "my will or my won't"... *shudders*

1. Repetitive riffing isn't a bad thing if you can use it creatively. Look at Black Sabbath for instance (Unless you hate Black Sabbath and then I have no choice but to call you a communist :neverusethis:).

2. I don't think you should always try to go all out with technicality all the time. I like prog yeah, but sometimes simplicity is not a bad thing, and The Mirror is an example of that for me.

3. I think that's one of the better vocal sections of the song aside from "HOW THE HELL COULD YOU POSSIBLY FORGIVE ME?!"

lol wut??

Durg

I don't get:

Scarred
Space Dye Vest  (why do people like this song so much is really what I don't get)
Prophets of War (Politics.  Blah!)
Rite of Passage  (good music but.....freemasonry?!?!?!?)

pmahoney1337

Under a Glass Moon
Blind Faith
The Dark Eternal Night

These have never made any sense to me, but I love them all.

Its quite possibly Dream Theater's saddest and most emotion packed song ever. Its incredibly dark (And I have an affection for songs that are dark, hence why I like Doom and Black metal  :lol ). Its not flashy, but it doesn't really call for that. The whole point of the song is to make you feel incredibly sad, and it succeeds wonderfully at that. I would love to see more songs of this type (Well, we do have Disappear, but I dunno if DT will make another song like that) come from Dream Theater.

lol maybe it's just that I don't like the song. the solo is ok, I certainly couldn't play it (God, if only..!) but there's loads better.

Ħ

I have to agree with Lowdz.  The solo in UaGM is technically and creatively probably the best of all JP's solos, but it really does not do anything for me emotionally.  In fact, the whole song doesn't do anything for me emotionally.  When I listen to it, all I can think of are the Misheard lyrics.

7StringedBeast

So much fail regarding UAGM,

so

much

fail..................

I say this in the most endearing of ways though  ;)

Im confused, is this thread asking us what songs we dont "get" as in, what we dont understand, meaning wise. Or "get" as in, we dont "get" why people like the song. Cause it seems to be going both ways.

I'm pretty sure you're the only one who has done the first.

Implode

A Change of Seasons.

I know many regard it as one of their best, and I've listened to it many times trying to get it to click, but the song just doesn't do it for me.

paulpetrucci

Wither
Forsaken
I Walk Beside You

The choruses of these songs just don't cut it for me

Misunderstood

Great song, until the solo comes. I usually like weird stuff, but that part just creeps me out.

Also :

Space Dye Vest - Can barely listen to it, never liked it.
Anna Lee - Just not my cup of tea

Seventh Son

The solo for Under A Glass Moon is amazing. The song doesn't really get started until like three minutes in though, which kind of hurts it imo
