I think dedicating an entire thread to discussing the victory that is New Millennium is long overdue.

I know that it was kinda built off of Caught In A Web but it's still one of Dream Theaters most unique sounding songs I can think of. It's kinda gotta an enjoyable funk vibe and is up there with Metropolis' instrumental section.

Agree? Of course you do.

Nick

Personally I'd say it is one of my least favorite DT songs and easily my least favorite opener.

Nick

p.s. Raise the Knife should have opened FII.

KevShmev

Good, solid song, for sure.

But as much as I like it, and like FII, I have always thought that "New Millennium" wasn't a very strong opener.

ZKX-2099

I actually think that the opener of each CD has been better than the one before it.

ZKX-2099

Wait no The Glass Prison kicks the ass of everything.

Cool Chris

I hate the keyboard intro, but once the song gets going, it's pretty enjoyable.

But yes, it isn't a great opener. But what else could have opened FII any better (of the songs that made the final cut)?
Maybe the grass is greener on the other side because you're not over there fucking it up.

Of the songs that made the cut.....Lines In The Sand.
Quote from: wkiml on June 08, 2012, 09:06:35 AMwould have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

Hmm, interesting.  I like that idea.

Personally, I really like New Millennium, and I think it makes a good opener.

Nah, that has to come after Hell's Kitchen.

BTW, I really like New Millenium.  It is one of the few DT songs that I disliked at first, but then grew to appreciate over time.

Orbert

I really like it as an opener.  From the opening notes, it is clear that some new sounds and influences have entered the Dream Theater repertoire.  I recognized the Chapman Stick immediately and thought it was cool as hell that Myung had picked one up.  It immediately put me into an 80's King Crimson mentality, and a lot of their work had to do with playing patterns against each other, which happens a lot in "New Millenium", so it all fit very nicely.

I can see how a lot of people have trouble with it, as it is definitely an anomoly in the DT catalogue, and they didn't exactly follow this new direction, but I thought it was great.

BRGM

It's an okay song with nice melodies and fun work on da chapman stick, I agree about that there's no other song on the album that'd be a better opener.

DarkEternalNight

I love it but it shouldn't have opened the album.

bosk1

I really like it, both as a song in general and as the album opener.  Interestingly, DT had fallen off my radar during the FII days, and I didn't hear this song until I heard the Caught In A New Millenium version on LSFNY.  I slightly prefer that version, but not sure if I actually think it is better, or if it's just because I heard that version before I heard the album version, but I really appreciate the clever juxtaposition of the different parts that gave rise to each of the two songs (CIAW and NM).

ZBomber

The version from the FII demos is miles better, imo. I don't know why, but I adore that version.

Sorry, same here.

It's an amazing song, easily one of Dream Theater's best opening songs.  Like Orbert said, those new sounds that Derek and the Chapman stick brought really make themselves known and they don't detract from the song at all.  It also has one of the most infectious grooves in a DT song.  If anything, I wish they'd try and make a more "rock" album than anything else because great songs like NM prove that they're really good at it.

Fine, I will say something kinda nice.

While Raise the Knife most certainly should have been the song to open Falling Into Infinity, New Millennium certainly would have made an decent B-side.

yorost

Shame, Nick, shame.

I think it is one of their best openers and is one of my favourite Dream Theater songs.

j

Great song, and very unique against the backdrop of DT's career.

I disagree with that. While Raise The Knife is an amazingly strong song, it doesn't work well as an opener. New Millennium is a decent opener, but LITS would have worked as well imo.

KevShmev

Actually, I think "Hell's Kitchen" being the first song off FII, an overture of sorts leading into "Lines in the Sand," would have worked wonderfully.  With the very beginning reworked a tad to make it sound like a first song.

I actually did that once - I burned a CD with a mix of FII and FII demo songs and made Hell's Kitchen the opening track. It works well, but I agree with you that the beginning would have needed some tweaking.

Absolutely!

Time to bring this thread back to life. Amazing song. Its a shame that they probably wont play it live again (being James' least favourite DT song)

Jay.Ess

Funnily enough, I've always disliked the song until the last few days! All of a sudden it's just resonated with me musically. Lyrics are a bit mehhhh, but I can live with that :)

Zydar

Great song. I didn't quite care for it at first, but after watching the Budokan DVD it grew on me and now I enjoy it a lot.
