What is it that determines who goes next? Did you just randomly make up that list on the first page. Sorry for my ignorance I'm just really confused.

You just say that you want to be on the list, and one of the mods will put you there (provided they see your post).

Yeah, the list is apparently in the OP, which I found out with embarrassing results.  :lol

Once again, I am extremely sorry for the delay, It was my fault entirely for not pushing on with the list before I went on holiday, I was just overwhelmed with work from college. But I am on half term at the moment so there will be no distractions from me finishing this list once and for all, so on with the show.

4. The Count of Tuscany

Dream Theater's latest contribution of an epic, and certainly an unforgettable one. The whole intro is a fantastic instrumental piece, proving that they still are at the top of their game. Like I described Take the Time, I feel that the intro gives off a happy type of vibe. The song starts to roar as the main riff kicks in. And James perfectly describes this part "took me for a ride" the song being the ride the listener is journeying through. Despite what the majority of people think about the lyrics, I think they work in context as the whole song just as the The Ministry of Lost Souls. The pre chorus part is really cool, but the chorus is part of the highlights of the song for me. A lot of people will probably disagree but I think the 'IIIIIIIIIIIIII' part is one of the coolest things DT have ever done vocally. The mini instrumental sections after each chorus add a nice touch to the song. A nice mix off heavy riff's and catchy keys always adds nicely to a song. JP's solo is amazing, the build up to it reminds me a bit of razor's edge for some reason but is still awesome. The mellowy part is a real cool part of the song. The best part of the song those has to be the acoustic part though. The light catchy guitar riff, James's brilliant soft vocals, the lyrics to this whole section are amazing. As it starts to get heavier and heavier you can feel the true epicness of this masterpiece. The usual epic guitar solo and the 'wooo woooo wooo' part just adding to the epicness. The way this album ends really does set high hopes for the upcoming album.

I also forgot to mention I did plan to update while on Holiday, but the hotel was probaly the first Hotel I stayed at with no free wifi. You had to pay quite a bit to use their wifi which was no way near worth it. So I ended up going to the business centre and used their computer for 30 min which I mostly spent checking other things while posting here to tell you guys of my situation.

I don't think I'd ever place TCOT that high, but it's an excellent song, for sure

This. It hovers around top 30 for me, but nothing I'd place super high.

Occasional_Madman

At least a top ten song for me. 19 minutes of musical bliss. :metal :tup

The middle section is really boring, so for that I can't really put it anywhere near the top 10. If that section was taken out it might be a top 20 song, but the entire top 20 for me is amazing! Would be much better without the middle section dragging it down though.

The instrumental intro and the E-bow part deserve a lot better than the stuff that surrounds them.

3. A Nightmare to Remember
I'd never be the same.... The most controversial pick probably to appear in this thread so far. But I love this song to death and it is my most played song on my iTunes. One of my favourite album openers of all time. The intro is probably my favourite part of the song. The build up is fantastic, the lightning to the dark piano, the final lightning strike and then the crash of the cymbal exploding with the rest of the band then cool key's followed by JP's heavy riff. Epic. DT opened with this when I saw them on Prog Nation. And still today it is one of the best live performances I have ever seen, factors contribution to that are that DT are my favourite band, and my #2 and #1 choices I have yet to see DT play live :P The drop cutrain works so well with this song and really builds up excitement. The verses are very cool, James's singing over the riff is nice. The little guitar solo JP does is a nice touch. The chorus for me, is a chorus to remember. A brilliant blend of heavy guitar work with James vocals and the usual backing from JP and MP. The second verse with MP's backing is really cool. But when one of the main riff's come back into play with James's vocals on top is another highlight of the song. Then suddenly a complete change of pace as the song is slowed down for a good 3 minutes. I think it really fits the song perfectly as this song contains some of DT's heaviest moments as well as containing this part of the song. I love the way this section builds up to explode with a nice little instrumental section. A lot of people think that this song contains too much wankery from JR and JP, but I think it works fine in this song. When the main theme comes back and then suddenly changes into a unison is a very epic part of the song. The unison is definitely one of my favourite, if not favourite unison by DT. And then probably the most controversial thing DT has ever done. MP's harsh vocal lead with dis-liked lyrics. Most people on this board dislike this part, but with haters, comes lovers, and I happen to be one of those lovers. Another highlight of the song follows, the uber proggy instrumental section. Although it only lasts like a minute, its bloody epic. Loads of cool riff's and beats that explode into a riff leading into another chorus to remember. This song really packs a punch for me, and I will never grow tired of it.

Good song. The "hopelessly drifting" part is orgasmic.

Pretty controversial...check. Good song...check.
This, essentially.

I really like it. I'm quite glad it's up this high, in fact. It's not where I'd put it - lightyears away from where I'd put it - but the heavy bits are immeasurably heavy, and the serene bits are immeasurably beautiful. ANTR strikes me as a song that's firing on all cylinders all across the board, and I'm pretty pleased to see it getting some proper appreciation at number three.

PlaysLikeMyung

ANTR at number 3? That is.... strange, to say the least

Seventh Son

ANTR is cool and all, but no way in hell is it #3 material. Wow.

Oh well. Interested in what the top 2 are gonna be now. You Not Me for #1? :neverusethis:

Awesome choice.  Nightmare is great....I wouldn't put it that high, but it''s definitely a top 15 for me.   :tup

If the song had cut out on the soloing wankery that goes on far too long this would definitely be in my top 10, but it ruins it for me kinda.

Hopefully, it's 6DIOT, or I will lose a smidge (more) respect.

RuRoRul

Wouldn't be #3 for me but top 15 / 20 at least. That's pretty much the same with anybody's list though, chances of having the exact same list are pretty slim  :lol

Good choice with Count Of Tuscany  too :tup

I think I'll give this a shot. hefdaddy42, if you're reading this, please put me on the list.

Two BC&SL tracks in the top 5? That's interesting.  :tup

This.

Although Nightmare would be in my bottom 20 or so.

Moffatt needs to get off his ass and get the last two done already.

2. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence
Dream Theater's longest song and one their most experimental songs they have ever made. And man, did the hit the nail on the head with this one. Overture is my least favourite part of the suite, but its still and nice easy listen as the orchestra blends the themes of melodies of the song really well together. Then we bang straight into About to Crash which is without a doubt one of my favourite section of the song. James's voice is just fantastic during this part. The chorus is so good and catchy in a good way. The lyrics are brilliant too. I love the part after the second chorus with JP's nice riff leading into a mini breakdown part then exploding with James's soaring vocals. Petrucci's solo is fantastic as usual and I love the way it slows down a bit at the end leading into a transition to War inside my Head. This one again a highlight for me, and this is part alone, is my most played song on my Ipod. I never get tired of listening just to this part (even though I prefer listening to the song as a whole). The intro is brilliantly built up to move on to the main riff. James's vocal style he uses in this part is really cool too. Again this chorus is just amazing, and contains my favourite MP backing vocal part which is brilliant. The intro to the Test that Stumps Them All is the highlight of the section. Portnoy just does sick drumming. Goodnight Kiss is a nice relaxing part to the song. Surprise surprise this chorus is awesome again. Although the best part of this section is the guitar solo which is one of my favourite DT guitar solo's. Just so awesome. I love the almost jazzy part of it too. Solitary Shell is unquestionably amazing. Jordans keys really do stand out for me on this song especially on his solo. About to Crash (reprise) is probably my favourite section though. From the awesome heavy guitar riff intro to the awesome chorus reprise part. The instrumental section has to be the one of the best instrumental sections they have done. Although it only lasts 2 minutes it is just fantastic. Losing Time is my second least favourite part, but still is such a great finale to such a great epic song.
