Is there a DT album every fan unequivocally loves?

Super Dude

Cygnus speaks of the divided opinions on Awake, but surely there's an album that most or all DT fans can agree on liking?

I wouldn't even say SDOIT, as there are clearly a fair number of fans that feel I&W - FII (or I&W - SFAM) is the only period worth listening to.

Perpetual Change

Images and Words is the closest for sure.  But a great deal of newer fans aren't as excited about it.

Samsara

Pretty safe to say Images and Words. But nothing else.

My books available for purchase on Amazon:

Jason Slater: For the Sake of Supposing
Roads to Madness: The Touring History of Queensrÿche (1981-1997)

Images and Words is *easily* the most liked across the spectrum of fans. Awake and Scenes are tied for 2nd place.

I dunno, I've seen a lot more Awake hate then I've seen SFAM hate.

perfey

Images & Words. It has all the classic tunes, great replay value, good track order, amazing lyrics, choruses and verses.

John94

I'd say Scenes myself. Not my favourite, but I love it.

LCArenas

I&W Definitely. Haven't seen a single DT fan who hates it.

Only the stupid ones.

I'm pretty sure Awake-criticism is made to seem more than it is on this forum. But anyway, I&W and SFAM are loved the most.

bosk1

Oh, absolutely.  I think the only 5 people in the world who hate Awake are members of this board, so, yeah.

Me being one of them :lol

Seriously though, I'd have to say I&W, Awake, and then probably 8VM in that order. Although even 8VM gets a lot of hate.

I think Awake is way more loved than 8vm even on this forum. People just universally love the track 8vm (except me.) Although some folks give the last 3 tracks from Awake shit, I find a lot more guff given to TALW, IWBY, and NE.

No there isn't... but IAW is pretty close, every other album has both many haters and lovers I think

ariich

To those discussing Awake, it's true that it's probably criticised more on here than in general, but I'd also say it's obsessed over more as well. It's far from being DT's most popular album.

None of their albums are unequivocally loved (as with pretty much all long standing bands) but I&W definitely comes the closest.

Awake seems to be met with either love, hate, or indifference on this forum and from fans in general. I've never seen anyone say "it's pretty good" or "I only like a couple songs."

Just to echo popular sentiment, I&W is the only realistic choice. Almost every fan likes or really likes it, and virtually no DT fans outright dislike it.

I hate it
At least it's the worst album...or, WDADU is worse. I don't like their old stuff though, I started to listen to Dream Theater when Octavarium was out so...that was the first album I heard, and I like that more, Since Jodan Joined the band, they're just getting better and better.

Well, it may need to grow on you. I'm sure some fans who like/love IaW didn't like it at first, but they had a pen and a piece of paper, and thought "WTF?"
\o\ lol /o/

Howdy.

It's pretty good. 6:00, CIAW, Erotomania, Voices, The Silent Man, Lie, and Space-Dye Vest are all songs I really dig, but none of them belong in my top twenty.

Meanwhile I could take or leave Innocence Faded, The Mirror, Lifting Shadows off a Dream, and Scarred. I don't dislike any of them, but I wouldn't miss them particularly if Dream Theater decided to erase them (god knows how!).

It's a fair album, but it's really not nearly as strong as the rest of the catalogue.

Incidentally, the guy who got me into Dream Theater really can't stand Images and Words. He finds it very 80s and twee. I tell him he should probably see a psychiatrist about that.

twee

I don't know if this is just a typo or some British slang that I've never heard before.
