All my natural instincts are begging me to stop

A physical absurdity, a tremendous mental game
Helping me understand exactly who I am

1.   Lost Not Forgotten
2.   Bridges in the Sky

4.   Looking Glass
5.   Illumination Theory

Honorable mentions: Outcry and Barstool Warrior.
Could you imagine a setlist with all these songs? :hefdaddy

Setlist Scotty

To the OP: altho long (due to TA having so many songs), you ought to do this as a poll.
Quote from: BlobVanDam on November 13, 2015, 07:37:14 PMAs a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.
Quote from: TAC on July 10, 2024, 08:26:41 AMPOW is awesome! :P

This is really telling about The Astonishing. Good to see most of the albums songs are a part of peoples favorites from this Era.

Yeah, but...

Number of songs receiving more than 5 votes
ADTOE - 6 of 9 (66.67%)
DT12 - 5 of 9 (55.56%)
TA - 4 of 29 (13.79%)
DOT - 7 of 10 (70.00%)

Number of songs receiving zero votes
ADTOE - 1 of 9
DT12 - 0 of 9
TA - 6 of 29
DOT - 1 of 10

Total votes per album
ADTOE - 107 (average of 11.89 votes per song)
DT12 - 73 (average of 8.11 votes per song)
TA - 88 (average of 3.03 votes per song)
DOT - 105 (average of 10.5 votes per song)

Of course, these numbers will change a bit as more folks vote, and I acknowledge that TA is more about the whole album than individual songs, but still....

I look at the various lists and how I could like any one of them and just think. The Mangini Era is fantasic!  :metal

darkshade

Pretty interesting to see, so far, that half of the votes have not gone to the band's only epic with Mangini.

It's just not a good epic. There's no cohesion or connectedness and nothing about the structure makes sense.

Only 5 songs in the poll have garnered more votes, so there's obviously something to it.

Not sure which of the epics on the list you are considering their "only" epic.  :lol

What is perhaps the most interesting to me is that if I were to compare my list to a list of my top 10 pre-Mangini songs, I am not sure which list I would choose as my favorite.

I would guess that he was referring to Illu as being that "only" epic (it being 20+ minutes long, featuring multiple movements and all that) as of now. Some of the MM-era pieces do have somewhat epic(esque) proportion on some level IMHO though. (BITS, BAI, Outcry, PBD probably) What do I know. All of them pieces I love though. (and who knows, maybe DT15 will have one or more 10+ minute pieces or even one or two 20+ minute pieces. I'd welcome either variety.)
